Bart turned the first page of the original Treatise on Living Cultures. The heavy parchment was nearly faded. It was less a finished manuscript than scribbles of overlapping script, edits, and archaic notation. The three professors immediately leaned in, their eyes darting across the chaos, trying to make sense of their own territories out of the text. Hester pointed a thick finger at a paragraph describing fruit culture stabilization.

"Edith Vetch. Clearly." Conrad spotted a dense cluster of substrate equations near the bottom margin.

"Ashcombe." Maud traced a line of text referencing fungal symbiosis.

"Dorr." Hester frowned, pointing at a section on grafting.

"That is undeniably a Pomological technique." The academics continued to bicker, pointing out every sentence that faintly resembled their modern disciplines. But Gregor wasn't looking at the sentences. He didn't understand the academic talk, so his eyes naturally drifted to the negative space the margins, the headers, the gaps between the paragraphs. "Boss."

"Yes?"

"Where the claim or idea came from." He pulled away from the manuscript and crouched slightly, inspecting the side of the heavy Rooted Quill indexing desk. He ran his hand along the wood paneling beneath the green glass plate until his fingers caught a small, nearly invisible seam. He pressed it. A tiny, shallow reference drawer slid open. "They kept instructions for their own filing system?" Bart looked up, almost offended.

"We've been trying to divide the Treatise into seven piles," Bart realized. Elian looked at him.

"And?"

"It wasn't written that way." Elian suddenly froze and stared at the densely annotated page Bart had just uncovered.

"Wait a minute" Elian pulled off his satchel and unbuckled the flap. He reached inside and pulled out the three green bound books. He placed all three books on the desk, right next to the ancient manuscript. They were the three texts that had started this entire ordeal, the circular citing loop that Elian had brought to the Archive days ago.

"Bart," Elian said, his voice tight. Elian pointed to a sprawling, heavily annotated derivation taking up the entire bottom half of the original manuscript page.

"This is my formula." Bart leaned closer.

"The same result?"

"No," Elian said, tracing the archaic variables with a shaking finger.

"The same derivation. They've simplified the notation in the modern texts, but this is the full experimental proof. This is where it comes from." It was the living culture stabilization relation. The exact formula Elian had been trying to trace. Bart looked at the margin next to the foundational derivation. It did not bear a single root mark. It bore the full cluster of all seven symbols. The three green books might not have been competing primary sources at all. They could have been later descendants of the exact same foundational claim.
