It happened at dawn. He felt it the moment it began, the last fraction of the bond settling into place, the ninety-nine becoming one hundred, the click of it. He felt June wake up at the same moment. She sat up in bed. Put her hand to her chest, not touching anything, just aware of something. She looked at the windowsill. He glowed. Low and deep and whole, the full purple-black of him, the deep resonance of a core at full bond, which he had never been before.
To him it felt as if the hearth at the bottom of the thirty-first floor had just expanded, the warmth of it made larger, and through June it became something close and warm and somehow happy, like the sound of a good laugh in a room that had been so, so very quiet. "Oh," she said, softly.
"Oh, that's—" Then the Ledger arrived. It did not come gently this time. It did not come as weather, as presence, or the slow accumulation of a bureaucratic notice slid under a door. It came as what it was: old, vast, impersonal, committed to the idea that things which existed must be categorized and things which resisted categorization must be corrected, and it filled the street outside and the garden and pressed against the boundary of the radius like a tide.
Vorrath was off the windowsill before June's feet hit the floor.
"NOW," he wrote on the water glass, large, fast. She was already moving.
