Nobody slept. June was in bed. Lauren was in her room. Cecile was in the spare room with the notebooks open. Vorrath was on the windowsill. Gerald was in the boundary stones. Tuesday was on patrol. The guardian was at the edge of the radius, still and large and waiting. The house was very quiet. Vorrath had been quiet too, since the evening, since the kitchen table and the writing on the water glass and June saying tell us what to do. He had told them. They knew what to do. There was nothing left to prepare.
He sat on the windowsill. He thought about the young man by the fire on the second floor. He thought about the decision that hadn't been inevitable. He thought about the list of six things in the book on the twenty-third floor, and the sixth thing written in different ink, and the three thousand years between the blank and the filling of it. He thought about armies. He thought about gods. He thought about the enormous silence that falls after history ends.
He thought about June reaching into the back of a closet for her shoe and pulling him out instead and saying, in a tone of perfect sincerity, you're pretty. Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon. He thought: of everything he had consumed, of all the things he had been, none of it had been as hard as this. None of it had cost as much. He thought: nothing had ever been worth as much. He thought: he would do it again. Every piece of it.
The binding and the windowsill and the pencil case and the biscuit and Gerald and the fence and the garden and all of it, every single Tuesday of it, without hesitation. June's light was still on. He bent his awareness to her room. She was sitting up, not reading, just sitting with her knees pulled up. She was not scared, or she was, but it was underneath something larger now.
The something larger was the look she'd had since the first week, since she'd decided that whatever lived in the cold closet meant her no harm and she could work with that. She looked at the windowsill.
"Tomorrow," she said. He glowed once.
"We'll be okay." He thought about this. He thought about what he had and what was coming. He thought about the threshold and the boundary stones and Speck's twelve and the ward and the cord and the mirror and everything Cecile had brought in her box. He thought about Lauren's paperwork and June's wish on her birthday candles and the letter from a woman who had dreamed the street before it was built. He glowed once.
Because she needed him to mean it, and he did, and certainty and meaning are not the same thing, and of the two of them, meaning was what mattered. She lay down. Closed her eyes.
"Goodnight, Vorrath," she said. He sat on the windowsill. He stayed all night.
