The house was quiet in the way houses are quiet after something large has passed through them. June slept late. Lauren did not go to work, she had called in, which Vorrath knew cost her, and she sat at the kitchen table with both hands around her mug and did not open her laptop and did not look at the letters on the counter and just sat. Gerald was back in the walls. Tuesday had resumed his patrol. Speck had not returned to the washing machine gap but was somewhere in the house.
Cecile came downstairs at eight and made toast and sat across from Lauren and neither of them said anything for a long time. Then Lauren said: "It worked." Cecile said: "For now." "For now," she agreed. Cecile looked at the ceiling, which was the floor of June's room, which was where Vorrath was.
"How long do we have?" He had been thinking about this since the Ledger withdrew. He had thirty-one floors. He had a bond at ninety-nine percent. He had a word 'chose' in a language he didn't know, and a letter from a woman who dreamed the street before it was built, and a family that had been keeping notes for generations about things that needed keeping. The Ledger did not have a category for him. The Ledger would make one. He didn't know how long that took.
He didn't know what the category would look like or what it would authorize them to send. He knew the Ledger was old and thorough and had never, in all of its long categorizing history, encountered something it could not eventually file. He thought: weeks, maybe. Months if they were lucky. He thought: not long enough.
He sat on the windowsill and said nothing, because he had no way to say it, and because Cecile and Lauren were already sitting with the same answer in the kitchen below and didn't need him to confirm it.
