He told her on a Tuesday. He had not told her anything, specifically. He had been managing what she knew just like he managed the temperature in her room, carefully, with intention, keeping things at the level that was useful without being harmful. He had told himself this was for her protection. He was starting to understand it was also for his own, because telling June things made them real in a way they were not before she knew them. He wrote it on the water glass.
Not everything, of course, the full shape of the Ledger was not something that fit on a water glass. But enough. An organization. Old and cold. Coming for him. Because of the bond. She read it. She was quiet for a moment.
"Because of me," she said. He wrote: no. She looked at him. She was nine years old and she was nobody's fool.
"Because of the bond. The bond is me." Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel. He wrote: the bond is both of us. She thought about this.
"What happens if they get you?" He didn't write anything. She read the silence just like she always did.
"Okay," she said. Not the okay that meant fine. The okay that meant I heard you and I'm thinking and I'll come back to this. She picked up her book. She did not read it. After a while she said, to the window: "We should tell Mom." He had been thinking this for two weeks and not acting on it, which was its own answer about where he was now. He wrote: yes. She nodded. Put her book down. Went downstairs. He heard the conversation start in the kitchen below.
June's voice, then Lauren's, then a long silence, then Lauren's voice again, different in register, the particular low careful voice she used when she was taking something seriously that she would prefer to dismiss. He sat on the windowsill. He thought: there was no version of this where Lauren didn't believe June. She had been living in this house. She had felt the cold in the closet and the minions in the walls and the warmth of a room that knew someone was in it. She would believe her daughter.
He thought: he was very glad June had her mother. He thought: he was very glad he had both of them. He did not examine this. He absolutely examined this.
