He watched her more carefully after the letter. She worked Tuesday through Saturday at the hospital, admin, early shifts and late ones depending on the week. On Sundays she did three hours of bookkeeping for a restaurant two streets over, at the kitchen table while June was at Cecile's. She had done this for at least as long as Vorrath had been watching, which meant she was doing it before that too. She didn't talk about money. Not to June.
Not on the phone to Cecile, though Cecile asked, sideways, like someone who had been told before not to ask directly. She said fine. She said getting there. She said June's great, Mom, she's really great, which was always true and was also, Vorrath understood, a subject change. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. She bought the reduced things at the supermarket. She timed it, he realized, she went at seven in the evening when the stickers went on.
She did it without embarrassment, efficiently, the way she did most things. She bought June the full-price cereal. Vorrath sat on the windowsill. He had consumed kingdoms. He had, genuinely, unmade things that were larger and more significant than this house on this street in this ordinary town, and he had never once felt the absolute helplessness of watching someone fight a quiet war with nothing he could do about it. He went down that night and reclaimed three more floors. It didn't help with the letter.
It was the only thing he had.
