Lauren's meeting with the heritage office went well. This was unexpected. Vorrath had prepared himself for it to be the kind of thing that went nowhere and cost Lauren another afternoon of managed fury.
Instead the heritage officer was a small, precise woman who had been in her job for twenty years and knew the protected tenancy clause and the street's listing status and the specific property law that applied to it better than anyone Lauren had spoken to, and she was, in the way of certain people in certain bureaucratic positions, genuinely angry on their behalf. The paperwork was filed by Thursday. It would not stop the Ledger. The Ledger did not operate in property law.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. He worked at night, in the threshold space between the house and the dungeon, the thing the family had built over three thousand years. It was not like reclaiming floors. It was slower, more careful.
He was not the only one who had built this space and he could not simply impose his will on it. He had to work with it, which was not something he was accustomed to doing. He found it easier than he expected. The space responded to him not like territory being claimed but like a conversation, back and forth, the house's intention meeting his and finding they were, after three thousand years of growing toward each other, going the same direction. He thought about that.
He thought: three thousand years ago he had been something that consumed everything it touched. He had touched this ground, this street, this cold deep earth, and he had not consumed it. Something in him, even then, even before the decision, had known this was not something to consume. He had simply been here. And the house had grown above him, and the family had lived in the house, and they had all been, without knowing it, doing the same thing. He was not, he realized, preparing to fight the Ledger.
He was preparing to show it something it had never seen. He went back upstairs. June was asleep. Fifteen days. He sat on the windowsill. He was almost ready.
