The box was on the kitchen table. It was a different box, older, that Cecile had sent for, that arrived two days later by courier with a note from a cousin in Accra that said only: I wondered when you'd need this. Inside: notebooks. Six of them, different sizes, different ages, the oldest with a cover that was more texture than color. Cecile's grandmother's handwriting. Her grandmother's grandmother's.
A woman before that whose name none of them knew, who had written in a language that had drifted far enough from anything current that Cecile could only read it partially, but partially was enough. They spread across the kitchen table for an evening and read. The notes were nothing dramatic. They were the opposite of dramatic: careful, precise, you could tell from the accumulated observations of women who had lived in this house or near it or connected to it and had paid attention. Temperatures. Dates.
Descriptions of feelings and presences and the quality of the cold in the back bedroom closet. Descriptions of things that had come near the house and turned away. Descriptions of a dormant something in the deep below that they had learned, over generations, to leave offerings for. A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
The oldest notebook had a page near the back, in the unknown language, with a single sentence that Cecile translated slowly, working at it, checking twice. When the dark one wakes, she read, it will be because someone reached in without fear. Do not teach the children to be afraid of the cold room. Teach them to leave things in the dark. The kitchen was very quiet.
"She knew," June said.
"She knew something," Cecile said.
"She didn't know it would be you. She just knew it would be someone in the family. Someone who wasn't afraid." Lauren looked at her daughter. June looked at Vorrath. He had been the Consuming Dark. He had been the Hollow Below. He had collapsed empires and unmade gods and spent three thousand years being the thing at the end of everything. A family had spent those same years leaving things in the dark for him, in case he woke up hungry.
He sat on the windowsill and said nothing and did not examine what he felt about this because what he felt about this did not have a shape yet. It was too large for a shape. He would need to sit with it for a long time before it became something he could name. System: Bond Strength: 99%. We want to say something. About the offerings. About all of it. We've been watching you for three thousand years, Vorrath. We watched you before the decision and we watched the decision and we watched all of it after.
We want to say: this is what you were for. Not the kingdoms. Not the consuming. This. We know you won't believe that yet. We're saying it anyway. This is what you were for.
