A package arrived on a Tuesday. Small, wrapped in brown paper, handwritten label. June opened it at the kitchen table after school. Inside: a small cloth bag, dark, tied with a cord. And a note in Cecile's handwriting that said: For the windowsill. He'll know what it's for. June read the note. Looked at Vorrath. Looked at the bag. Placed the bag on the windowsill next to him. He examined it without touching it, which was easy because he still had no hands. He knew what it was within seconds. Something old.
Older than the house, older than the street, and, apparently, older than the version of this city that built the street. The cloth was nothing. What was inside it was a locating ward, the device that confused and made a place hard to find for things that were looking. The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Cecile's grandmother's grandmother had made this. Possibly further back than that.
It had been passed down through a family that, he was understanding, had always known that some things needed keeping. He sat with this for a long time. June had placed it next to him on the windowsill, which was exactly where it should go. He didn't know if she knew that or if she just felt it. With June the line between knowing and feeling had always been thin. That night he extended his awareness through the ward and felt it working.
A gentle blur, a softness at the edges of the house's location, a thing that wouldn't stop a determined Seeker but would make the house harder to mark and the sigils harder to hold. He thought about Cecile on a bus with this in her bag. He thought about what it meant to be protected by a seventy-one year old woman with a cloth bag and a river and no fear whatsoever. He thought: he had been the most dangerous thing in every room for three thousand years.
He thought: he was not, in this house, the most formidable thing. Not even close.
