It happened on a Wednesday. Tuesday was on perimeter. Speck was in his gap. The guardian stood at the edge of the radius, as it always did, steady and large and waiting. And Gerald came out of the walls. The similar way he had come out when the Ledger stood in the street, that had been a response, a rallying moment. But this was deliberate. Gerald moved through the hallway and through the front door and stood in the garden in the gray morning light, and Vorrath felt him there.
Gerald had never left the house before. Vorrath watched. Gerald stood in the garden for a while. Then he moved to the garden wall. Then, slowly, he pressed himself into the stone of the wall. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. Vorrath felt it through the boundary, Gerald's presence pushing into the exterior wall of the house, the way he'd pushed into the collapsed geometry of the sixth floor, moving through the broken places, settling in.
The ward on the outside of the wall thickened. It hadn't by much. Not dramatically. Just the blur at the edges of the house's location deepening by one increment, the sigil-resistance strengthening, the house's presence in the world becoming somewhat harder to locate. Gerald was reinforcing the ward from inside the boundary stone. Vorrath had not asked him to do this. He had not thought of it. Gerald had thought of it.
He sat on the windowsill and felt Gerald working, slowly and patiently, through the morning, and he thought about what it meant that the first thing Gerald did when he finally left the house was make the house harder to find. June came home from school and went straight to the windowsill.
"Gerald's in the walls outside," she said. One glow.
"Is he okay?" One glow. She looked at the window.
"Is he doing something important?" One glow. She nodded.
"Good," she said. Then: "Tell him he can have an extra biscuit when he's done." He was not going to pass on this message. He absolutely passed on this message.
