Chương 8: Chapter 7: The Weight of Ownership

A week after the boathouse incident, the letter arrived. And week after that, Jack stood inside it once again. Nothing about the place had changed. The boards still smelled of rot and old salt. Light slipped through warped planks in thin, uneven lines, cutting across dust and shadow. Outside, the water moved with slow patience, the tide brushing the shore as if it had all the time in the world. As run-down as it was, the place had good bones.

Jack stood where a man had once lain bound and unconscious, hands clasped behind his back, eyes unfocused as if the space itself might offer up an explanation. The deed felt heavier than paper should have, folded tight in his hand like a question that refused to be answered. For a brief, familiar moment, he considered folding it back into his coat and disappearing before the walls finished becoming something permanent. He had always intended to remain unanchored. The thought held longer than it should have.

"What are we doing back here?" Her voice was calm and curious. Not sharp enough to startle him, just enough to pull him out of his thoughts. The moment for indecision had passed. Jack turned. Aldric followed her a moment later, boots thudding softly on the boards. Jack was quietly grateful for that. He had not wanted to have this conversation twice. Jack raised the folded parchment.

"I own it now," he said.

"I don't know why." Then he lifted the second paper in his other hand.

"It came with a note. A thank you of sorts." He paused.

"And a warning." They waited.

"Our actions have stirred up danger more ways than one, after the tea house and then here. I don't trust Harris to keep his word," Jack stated. Stolen novel; please report.

"It has long since been whispered that House Draymoore has ties with the city's underworld," Seraphine added in agreement.

"And the thief saw our faces, if he turns on Harris or chooses to take revenge another way." Aldric let the implication fall. Jack let out a breath, signaling a decision he had only just made.

"Something's coming, that much is certain. We will need to be ready when it does." Jack said. The words hung between them, heavier than the damp air.

"We're tied together now," Jack continued.

"If anyone comes looking, we're stronger together than apart. Apart, we're easy solutions." He looked between them.

"Together, we're the problem they have to deal with." Seraphine's expression tightened. Not fear, calculation. The kind of look she wore when she was deciding which truths to keep and which to trade. Aldric nodded once, slow and deliberate.

"Sticking together is the solution, but whatever we become it needs to be legal. We can't be fighting them and the law. A war on two fronts is suicide." Aldric agreed. He leaned against a crate, posture shifting, back into something old and familiar. Watchman's posture. Seraphine pushed off the wall, already thinking ahead.

"Greyhaven doesn't care what you are," she said, "as long as you're useful and predictable." A faint smile tugged at her mouth.

"So, we become something ordinary." She ticked ideas off on her fingers.

"Courier outfit. Private troubleshooters for guild disputes. Licensed adventurers-for-hire." Her smile sharpened.

"Or a renovation crew that keeps odd hours and doesn't ask questions."

"A front keeps people from asking why we're together," Aldric continued.

"A plan keeps us from reacting instead of choosing. And coin keeps desperation from making decisions for us." Jack agreed.

"Whatever we claim to be, we help people who won't sell us out. Dock Ward remembers kindness longer than gold." Aldric said. He paused, then added,"And the Watch ignores people who fix problems before paperwork happens." Seraphine turned toward Jack.

"We have options." Jack nodded, weighing them. The tide shifted outside, a low slosh against the pilings, like the bay itself was listening.

"I think a combination works," Jack said.

"We set up here. In the docks. We help people who need it when we're not working contracts." He spoke slowly now, testing the idea as he said it aloud.

"We register as an adventuring company, but we build a reputation for unconventional fixes." His mouth twitched, not quite a smile.

"Monster problem? Fine. Your husband is a monster. Also, fine. Your business has a monster of an issue?" He shrugged.

"We'll hear you out." Aldric let out a slow breath, approval, not relief.

"That works. Ordinary on paper. Uncomfortable in practice." A pause.

"The Watch understands outfits like that." Seraphine's smile turned genuine.

"A public face," she said, "and a private understanding. We don't break the law. We resolve situations before laws notice them." Aldric nodded.

"If Dock Ward thinks we're theirs, they'll warn us when trouble's coming. People protect those who protect them." Jack considered that. He looked at the crooked doorway, the water beyond it, and the city that kept pretending it wasn't built on compromises.

"We'll need more people," he said.

"Someone with the will of the docks behind them. Someone who hears things before they become problems." He looked between them.

"Anyone come to mind?" Seraphine and Aldric exchanged a glance. Then both nodded. The shape of it began to form, quietly, like a tide turning. Aldric would handle registration, permits, and keeping the Watch at arm's length. Seraphine would handle contracts, language, and make sure that unconventional never crossed into illegal. And whoever they brought in next would handle the docks themselves, community ties, quiet aid, and early warnings. Jack looked around the boathouse one last time. It felt different now.

Not forgotten. Not abandoned. Claimed.
