Perspective shift III: Conviction Kathrine stood at the window beside her father, watching the sun sink beneath the city's edge. From this height, Greyhaven looked almost gentle. The harbor reflected the dying light in bands of copper and gold. Rooftops caught the last warmth of day before surrendering it to shadow. It was beautiful in the way distance allowed.

Lord Thann seemed content, hands folded behind his back, eyes following the slow descent of the sun as though it was an old companion he had learned to appreciate. Kathrine felt none of it. The decision pressed against her ribs, heavy and unresolved. She could not share her father's calm. The grandeur before her felt hollow, a thin veil laid over something fractured and fragile.

"Father," she said, the word hurried, clipped by urgency. Lord Thann lifted a hand without turning, palm open. Not dismissal. A pause. He gestured toward the view, asking her to wait. Kathrine exhaled through her nose, half impatience, half an attempt to steady herself. The responsibility he had been easing onto her shoulders over the past years weighed heavier each season, and today it felt almost unbearable. She watched as the sun finally slipped free of the horizon, its radiance swallowed by the coming night.

Across the city, lanterns sparked to life one by one. The day might have been over but work never truly ended.

"Kathrine," Lord Thann said at last. He turned to face her, and when he spoke his voice was quiet, unguarded.

"Seeing you today, acting as you did, brought me more pride than almost anything I could remember." She blinked, caught off guard.

"It was not yet my time," he continued, "but it was coming. And it comforted me to know that you could conduct yourself with such clarity. You were sharp, thoughtful, measured, and brilliant." He smiled faintly.

"Then why wouldn't you listen?" she asked, the words spilling out before she could restrain them.

"He had no real proof, Father. And you wouldn't let me—" Lord Thann raised his hand again, this time turning fully toward her. The gesture was not one of command. It was a request. She stopped.

"I sheltered you from this fight longer than I should have," he said.

"Our circumstances were more dire than I allowed you to see. We were one false step, one convenient theft, away from being a noble house in name and squalor." He paused, then added, "But that was not what mattered today." Kathrine frowned.

"Then what did?"

"What we were shown." He returned his gaze to the darkening city.

"Today, we were given the rare opportunity to witness a young man posture himself for others. To watch someone carry conviction beyond comfort, beyond safety, beyond what most would ever choose." His voice tightened slightly.

"And he did so with almost nothing. No protection. No promise of tomorrow. Only the certainty that someone had to stand there." Kathrine opened her mouth, then closed it.

"Can you imagine," Lord Thann continued, "what such a man might become if he survived long enough to see success?"

"But Father, after buying out Albriecht, isn't this too much of a risk?"

"I had only known two men in my life with conviction and presence like what we saw today," he said, cutting gently through her protest.

"The first was over forty-five years ago." His voice grew distant.

"To this day, his image still haunts me. Not because he frightened me. Because he inspired me." He turned slightly, as though the memory had weight.

"It was during the war. We were trapped in a half-collapsed house. Our commander was dead. Hope had already left the room. There were lieutenants present, men who outranked him by far, and none of them could see a way out." Kathrine listened now, silent.

"There was a sergeant," Lord Thann continued.

"When everyone else froze, he acted. Not because he had the authority. Because the alternative was unthinkable." His hands curled slightly at his sides.

"He took command without asking. Carried the wounded when no one else could. Chose others again and again, even as it slowed us, even as it cost us ground. He dragged everyone of us to safety through sheer will and determination when all others would have tried to save themselves." Lord Thann's eyes shone, though the tears did not fall.

"In the end, after lowering every last man down a sheer cliff, he looked back at us and said nothing at all." Kathrine's breath caught.

"Then he cut the rope himself." The silence that followed was heavy, reverent.

"We watched him fall," Lord Thann said quietly.

"And I swear, even then, he was smiling." He turned back to her.

"Jack is the closest thing to that man I have seen since. I am choosing to believe, he could be better. For us, and the city." Kathrine shook her head faintly.

"That's not—""Breakwater might not survive what is coming," Lord Thann said.

"But I have no doubt his actions will save lives. And if the cost is his own safety, his own standing, even his life, he would pay it without hesitation." He looked at her fully now.

"When I said he was rarer than magic," he said softly, "I did not yet understand how wrong I was." The lanterns below flickered brighter as night settled fully over the city.

"He is far rarer than that."
