Chương 31: Chapter 30: Duty and Purpose

Jack was already at the table when the others arrived. The guild hall was quieter than it had any right to be. Lamps burned low. The smell of dinner still hung in the air, faint but comforting, like a promise already kept. Outside, the Dock Ward settled into its uneasy night rhythm. Seraphine closed a ledger and set her pen aside.

"You asked what we could afford," she said.

"The answer hasn't changed. One job, maybe two if we're careful." Aldric dropped into a chair, rolling one shoulder. Kael lingered near the wall, arms folded. Jack nodded.

"What's the most pressing." Seraphine didn't rush. She never did when she was choosing where to apply pressure.

"There's plenty of routine work," she began.

"Escorts, overnight guards, damage assessments. It's steady coin. Useful, but nothing that changes our standing." She slid one parchment forward.

"This one's different. An escort request asking for you. By name." Jack didn't reach for it. Aldric snorted.

"That didn't take long."

"They're not offering more than standard pay," Seraphine continued.

"No reason given. Just… insistence." Kael tilted his head.

"They want the symbol, not the service."

"Or they want to see how close they can stand to the fire without paying for the heat," Aldric added. Jack shook his head once.

"We pass." Seraphine nodded and set it aside without comment.

"There's also a house requesting a meeting," she said next.

"Vague on purpose. No stated problem. No urgency." This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Aldric exhaled.

"That's politics knocking."

"Not tonight," Jack said.

"Agreed," Seraphine replied easily, already moving on. She didn't slide the third parchment forward. She kept it in her hand.

"There's a warehouse manager down by the inner piers," she said.

"He's losing goods. Claims it's not theft, but damage." Jack's attention sharpened.

"How?"

"Crates torn open," she replied.

"Stock ruined. Claw marks, by his account. And one of his guards was attacked overnight. Alive, but shaken." Aldric leaned forward.

"Did he see anything?"

"No," Seraphine said.

"He said it felt… wrong. That's the word he used." Kael pushed off the wall.

"That lines up." Jack looked at him.

"With what?"

"Rumors," Kael said.

"Something moving through the docks at night. People not coming home." Aldric frowned.

"Disappearances?" Kael nodded.

"A few. Scattered. No witnesses. No clear pattern yet." Jack folded his hands on the table.

"Storm fallout?"

"Could be," Kael admitted.

"Displacement. Fear. People leaving without saying anything, but this feels wrong." Seraphine inhaled slowly.

"There's more." She set the parchment down at last.

"I received an inquiry that isn't a contract, but a request," she said.

"From parents. Their daughter hasn't come home." Silence settled.

"She used to walk the docks in the evenings," Seraphine continued.

"Cleared her head by the water, apparently. The Watch dismissed it. Said she probably ran off." Aldric muttered something under his breath. Jack closed his eyes briefly, then opened them.

"Any proof?" Seraphine shook her head.

"None that would stand up to scrutiny."

"And the warehouse?" Jack asked.

"Clear damage. A pattern. A paying client," she answered.

"And if he shuts down, it ripples outward." Jack leaned back, considering.

"We can't chase rumors," Aldric said carefully.

"Not without something solid." Kael didn't argue. He just looked tired. Jack studied the table, the parchments, the spaces between them.

"We take the warehouse," he said. Seraphine nodded once, already marking the ledger.

"I'll send word." Kael exhaled, slow and controlled.

"And the other?"

"We keep listening," Jack replied.

"If something changes, we reassess." Aldric glanced toward the windows.

"This is happening at night."

"Yes," Seraphine said.

"Which means waiting doesn't help anyone." Jack pushed back his chair and stood.

"I know we're tired," he said.

"But if something's testing the edges, it won't wait for us to be rested." He looked at each of them in turn.

"We handle the warehouse tonight. Before it escalates." No one disagreed. Aldric rose, already reaching for his gear. Kael nodded, quiet resolve replacing hesitation. Seraphine gathered the papers, her movements brisk and precise. As they moved to prepare, she paused just long enough to slip the parents' inquiry back into her stack instead of discarding it. Jack noticed. He said nothing. Outside, the Dock Ward breathed in the dark. Lanterns flickered. Water lapped against stone.

Somewhere near the warehouses, something waited.
