The noise of the larger meeting faded into the distance. People moved deeper into the building. Footsteps on stairs. A door closing. Then quiet, broken only by the low creak of timber settling back into stillness. Jack remained standing.
"I think it's time," he said, "to make ourselves known in the noble halls." Aldric paused at that. Not because it was wrong. Because it was inevitable. Seraphine exhaled slowly, already shifting pieces across a board that only she could see.
"Once you step into noble halls," she said, "you stop being a rumor and start becoming a factor. And you will need a change of clothes."
"We need to choose who hears our voice first. That matters." Jack did not argue. This fact was also inevitable. It was no use trying to swim against the current. You were better off making a splash as you dove in.
"We're not going to them as petitioners," he said.
"We've already acted and established ourselves as something here in the ward."
"That's good," Seraphine replied.
"Because we don't need to be viewed as knocking on doors." She folded her hands, precise as ever.
"We send a message, clean and controlled, to the noble houses and any facility with formal ties to the docks." She wrote it all out without drama. Simple and pragmatic. A formal notice to anyone with an association with the Dock Ward was quietly circulated. No seals beyond what was necessary. No rhetoric. A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Dock Ward stabilized. Harbor disruption mitigated.
Signed simply: Breakwater Holdings Independent Contractors — Harbor & Infrastructure"No threats," she continued.
"No ideology. No requests. Just facts." Jack shifted to read the documents better.
"Where does it land?"
"Merchant and consortium offices. The Harbor Master. And yes, the noble circles."
"Someone will bite." And they did. The response came within days. Not from a loud or flashy house. Not from a lord with loud banners and fanfare. The House of Thann. Old money. Older trade ties. Quiet reach. The kind of house that noticed when losses stopped appearing in ledgers. The invitation was polite and measured. House Thann requests a private conversation regarding recent events in the Dock Ward and matters of shared interest. No summons. No demands.
"They are likely testing the waters to see how we react," Sera said. Aldric read it once.
"It's cautious."
"That's good," Seraphine said.
"If we weren't already making waves, they'd be dismissive." Jack set the letter down after a brief read-through. Concern creased his face.
"If we go, we gain what? What is the goal? Funding… hopefully. Insight… maybe. At minimum, a non-enemy who won't move against us." Seraphine shifted towards him to show she was serious.
"This is a different ballgame, Jack. If you misstep, they'll try to define us."
"Or box us into a role we didn't choose for their convenience," Jack said in agreement. The silence that filled the space was one of agreement.
"Are you sure you don't want me to handle this one?" Seraphine asked.
"Yeah, Jack. This is literally her wheelhouse," Aldric said.
"No, it's got to be me. I need to see who they are to determine if they become a hindrance or a helper. Plus, I'm not walking in blind, and I know what is at stake." Seraphine studied him.
"One question," she said quietly.
"Do you want to go as a problem-solver, a protector of the Dock Ward, or a partner in long-term infrastructure?"
"All three," Jack answered without hesitation. Seraphine nodded, immediately understanding his position.
"Then we don't say all three. It's too showy," she said.
"We demonstrate them." Aldric tightened his gloves.
"Good. Nobles respect people who don't beg or bluster."
"And they listen longest to those who show restraint," Kael said with his limited knowledge of the upper echelons of society. Jack turned toward the side room where Seraphine had been working since the charter had been finalized.
"You said I'd need a change of clothes." Seraphine allowed herself a small smile.
"You're walking into House Thann as a staple of the Dock Ward, as a fact," she said.
"Facts don't wear armor. They wear intentions." She reached under the table for a folded garment and set it on the table.
"And intention," Seraphine added, "always dresses with a purpose."
