Chương 43: Chapter 42: Terms of Engagement

Saint didn't sit. Instead, he worked the room, greeting each of the founding members by name, as if their presence was always part of the plan and not in direct opposition to the invitation. That was the first thing Jack noticed. The second was the setting. The room itself was anything but modest. Polished stone walls veined with gold inlay. Thick rugs underfoot. A long table of dark lacquered wood set with crystal decanters and low-burning lamps that cast a warm, deliberate glow.

This wasn't a meeting space meant for comfort. It was a place meant for making decisions and brokering deals. Two chairs waited on one side of the table. Saint now stood opposite them, hands folded loosely behind his back, posture relaxed. No guards. No visible weapons. The door shut with a soft, final click that sounded far too practiced. Saint gestured to the chairs.

"Please," he said.

"Sit." Jack didn't move. Saint smiled, unfazed, and inclined his head slightly.

"Very well," he said.

"Let's begin properly." He reached into his coat and placed a fairly large pouch on the table. It landed with a clang that spoke of quite the haul of coin.

"First," Saint said calmly, "an apology. Your man was hurt badly, and it's my understanding that you spent a small fortune saving his life." No one spoke, but the implication of this man's access to knowledge and resources rang true in each of their ears.

"My contract stipulated restraint, not blood," Saint continued.

"I specifically requested no injuries. You saw the restraint. The warning shot. The delay of action, even when tested." Aldric's jaw tightened. He was reliving the moment as Jack scrambled to adjust his plan for this meeting. Seraphine and Jack had spent quite a while role-playing scenarios, and this one had him on his heels.

"And yet," Jack said, seething, "people died." Saint nodded once, not defensive, leaving no room for denial.

"Yes," he said.

"Because restraint fails when pride enters the equation. Your arrow forced escalation." Jack didn't argue that. The man was right. Jack chose to escalate while Aldric had sought peace. But after his subordinate was hurt, there was no other option. Doing any less would invite others to believe Breakwater would bend to power and a show of force. Now they understood the bite behind the bark.

"We are not looking for compensation. We are looking for answers."

"Compensation or remuneration, call it what you will," Saint said, gesturing to the pouch.

"Medical costs. Repairs. Disruption to your operations. I do hope you'll consider the matter settled." Jack didn't touch it. The matter was anything but settled. But Jack needed to play nice for now. "And the thieves?" Seraphine asked. She could feel Jack's inner turmoil and chose to step in to right the ship. Saint's smile softened, just slightly.

"Their leader has taken the outcome personally," Saint said.

"He believes his authority was challenged. A vendetta is forming, one that could cost you everything." Kael shifted uncomfortably.

"Are you offering to stop him?" Jack was surprised by Kael's insight. It typically took him longer to connect the dots.

"I'm offering to clean up a situation I helped create," Saint replied mildly.

"Permanently." Jack shook his head once.

"We're not authorizing that," Jack said.

"If someone attacks me or the guild, we'll defend ourselves and show no mercy. But I won't stoop to their level." Saint studied him for a beat, then nodded.

"Fair," he said.

"That's your choice. And at least now, you've been warned." Jack folded his arms.

"Then explain where we are here." Saint's expression brightened, genuine this time.

"Of course." He gestured broadly to the space around them.

"This casino is entertainment on the surface," Saint said.

"A distraction. Dice, cards, coin changing hands. But that's not the real business." He stepped closer to the table.

"The real money is in outcomes. Futures. Influence. You can bet on a ship making port. A business surviving a season. A council vote failing or succeeding. Literally everything is fungible. And this isn't the only one." Jack's eyes narrowed.

"Next, I suppose you're going to tell me people rig the game." Saint smiled.

"Constantly," he confirmed.

"Less profit than pure chance, but far safer. A small edge on a near-guaranteed outcome while simultaneously ruining a competitor's plans is irresistible." Aldric exhaled slowly.

"That explains a great deal."

"The Dock Ward isn't unique," Saint continued.

"This city is quietly bleeding from a thousand controlled cuts. Not chaos. Not collapse. Not yet, at least." Kael frowned.

"Why does the city allow it?"

"Control," Jack said flatly. He read the situation as soon as he heard it. Saint inclined his head.

"Exactly." Seraphine watched him closely.

"Is that your purpose?" Saint chuckled softly.

"My purpose is business, is influence," he said.

"Connecting dots others pretend aren't related. This casino belongs to someone else, but it grants me access." Jack cut in.

"Access to extort people for money?" Saint turned to him, unoffended.

"No," he said.

"Access to power. Money is just how I keep score." Uncaring of the politics of the situation, Aldric interrupted.

"I want to know how you were able to set us up. We took the job knowing there was a risk, but this is beyond our comprehension. Thieves, I understand. This, I do not." Jack would have been more tactful, but he was curious to know the answer.

"I appreciate your candor, and I will answer it with my own," Saint said.

"It is simple, really. When I couldn't reel you in with the original request, I realized I needed a better hook. I bought that merchant's mounting debt and used it to get him to hire you. He received a much-needed extension and the ability to secure your services by clearing another debt. It was a win-win for everyone." Seraphine grabbed Aldric's wrist, interrupting the tirade that was coming.

"You hired thieves to steal that debt. How is that a win-win for him?"

"That was simply a test. The payment would have made it to me and eventually to the proper owner. Any other outcome would have put more strain on the merchant, and the likelihood of a return on my investment would have plummeted." While Jack appreciated his honesty, he had one final question.

"You say it's simple, but the lengths you went to and the money you spent with no promise of return are disproportionate to the situation. So, my question is why?" Saint straightened at the question.

"Which brings us to why you're here. I don't make moves unless I know all the variables. Anything less is a risk, not an investment." Jack didn't respond.

"You've already changed the Dock Ward," Saint said.

"Employment. Trade. Confidence. That attracts attention. I needed to know whether you'd fold when pressed."

"And?" Jack asked.

"And you pushed back," Saint said.

"Decisively. You held the line. You didn't reach for shortcuts." Jack leaned forward.

"Breakwater doesn't have time for half-measures," Jack said.

"If you believe in leverage, start betting on success instead of failure. This city needs to change to survive what's coming next." Saint held his gaze. A small smile grew on his face, slowly, thoughtfully.

"I'm beginning to believe you," Saint said.

"And I may just do that." He gestured toward the door.

"This was your first introduction to this world," Saint said.

"I'll be watching you from here on out." Jack stood.

"This isn't a game. We're not your stalking horse," Jack said as he got up to leave. Saint laughed quietly.

"No," he said.

"You're the race not yet won." The door opened. And a new power had entered the board, and he was already several moves ahead.
