Chương 28: Chapter 27: an Inherent Risk

Lord Thann let the quiet linger for a few moments longer. It was not the silence of dismissal or impatience. It was measured, deliberate, the kind that invited truth without demanding it. He studied Jack across the low fire, fingers loosely interlaced, expression thoughtful rather than guarded.

"You didn't grow up here," he said at last. It was not a question. Jack blinked once. He had expected something sharper.

"No," he replied.

"Not in Greyhaven." Lord Thann nodded faintly, as if confirming a suspicion.

"I thought not. There is a grain to you that's uncommon here." Kathrine's gaze flicked from her father back to Jack.

"Uncommon how?"

"Moral fiber," Lord Thann said.

"Not absent in this city. Just rare. Some days it feels rarer than magic." Jack shifted slightly in his chair. The fire crackled. He glanced briefly toward the harbor windows before returning his attention to them.

"I don't think Greyhaven lacks virtue," he said carefully.

"It just makes it expensive." Kathrine's mouth curved.

"That's a charitable way of saying people choose convenience over decency."

"Yes," Jack agreed." And often for reasons that make sense at the time." Lord Thann leaned forward a fraction.

"So where did you learn not to?" Jack hesitated. This was not territory he offered lightly. He felt the instinct to deflect, to generalize, to keep the answer clean and forgettable. Instead, he offered the truth without offering the place it came from.

"My parents died when I was young," he said.

"I was raised by my grandparents." Kathrine stilled and Lord Thann did not press farther. They waited.

"They were already old when they took me in," Jack continued.

"Old enough to have lived past illusion. They'd seen what ambition does when it goes unchecked. What shortcuts cost in the long run." He paused.

"They weren't idealists. They were observant. Cynical, in the way that comes from paying attention for a very long time. They taught me that virtue isn't about purity. It's about endurance." Kathrine studied him.

"So your morals aren't naïveté."

"No," Jack said.

"They're an inheritance." The word settled heavily between them. Kathrine leaned forward, elbows resting lightly on her knees. The shift was subtle, but the room still changed, it felt heavier.

"Conviction like that often becomes rigidity. Or worse." She stated. Jack met her gaze intentionally.

"Only when it's unexamined." A smile crept across her face for the first time.

"Good," she replied.

"Then let's examine it." She watched him for a moment longer than was comfortable.

"What happens if the burden becomes too great?" Kathrine asked.

"How do I know you won't walk away when it stops being manageable?" The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. Jack did not answer right away. When he did, his voice was measured.

"Burdens are something you carry because you have to. Because you're obligated. Because you're trapped by circumstance." He met her eyes.

"I am neither obligated nor trapped. I neither have a lack of commitment nor care." He paused, then softened.

"I do this not because I have to. Not because someone placed it on my shoulders. I do it because I found myself in a position to make a difference, and I care enough to follow through." He exhaled slowly.

"The alternative is to do nothing. To walk away. To abandon the people who have come to rely on me." He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, hands clasped.

"Breakwater isn't a person. It's an idea. An idea shaped by the people who chose to stand when they didn't have to." He held her gaze.

"Circumstances may have drawn us together, but our ideals are the fabric that holds us." The pace sharpened as he leaned back in his chair accepting her questions with out deceit or obfuscation. She pressed him on Greyhaven. On its rot and reform. On whether he believed people were corrupt or simply tired. Her questions came quickly, each one testing not just his beliefs but his ability to think on his feet.

"I understand malice," Jack said at one point.

"And I've seen evil. But I also understand that sometimes man's greatest enemy is apathy. The act of choosing the easy path instead of the righteous or difficult one."

"And who decides which path is righteous?" Kathrine asked.

"Everyone. Individually. All at once. That's the problem. Everyone is making decisions based on their own sense of morality and history." He smiled faintly at his own observation.

"Our journeys are unique. No one starts from the same place or moves in the same direction."

"And how do you know your direction is the right one?" she asked, a smirk touching her lips.

"I don't," he said.

"No one does, really." Her lips twitched, almost a smile in return. They circled each other with more words. She continued to look for contradictions. He refused to give her easy ones. She pressed on restraint, on power deferred, on whether refusal was simply another form of control.

"You say you won't become an authority," she said eventually.

"Many have said the same before consolidating power. Morality makes an excellent disguise."

"It does," Jack replied evenly.

"That's why we put constraints on ourselves that hurt."

"Such as?"

"We refuse control we could take," he said.

"We accept consequences we could deflect. We leave room for others to act." Lord Thann glanced at the clock and cleared his throat softly.

"Kathrine." She glanced at him, then back at Jack.

"I'm not finished."

"I know," Lord Thann said, though he did not sound displeased. Kathrine exhaled slowly.

"So what holds it together, then? If not authority. If not control." Jack answered without hesitation.

"Turning responsibility into opportunity," he said.

"For others. Not just for us. I'm not so selfless as to claim I'm doing all of this only for others. Of course there are upsides. But this responsibility wasn't something we wanted. It was thrust on us. We're just strong enough to do something with it, but how we do it is just as important as why."

"And if that 'how' costs lives?" she asked. Jack did not flinch.

"Then we failed. And we carry that failure. It's not something I'm unaccustomed to." The implication filled the room.

"If that's true, why would we ever put our faith in you?" she asked, disgust edging her tone.

"Kathrine," Lord Thann said, sharper this time.

"It's all right," Jack said quietly.

"I am asking a great deal from you both, and she is right to be wary." He looked at her.

"If a man came to you offering a deal and said to trust him because he had never made a mistake, you would call him a liar." She nodded.

"Unfortunately, some of my mistakes came at a great cost," Jack continued.

"Greater than I ever wished to see." He lowered his gaze as tears welled in his eyes.

"I like to think my choices have saved lives. Done more good than harm. But I still agonize over the losses, even minimized as they are." He lifted his head again.

"I am here because I know now that I need help. Guidance. Partnership. I can't do it alone." The room went still. The fire burned lower. Outside, the light shifted as afternoon edged toward evening. Ships moved through the harbor below, distant and orderly from this height. His time there had ended. No deal was offered, and none was asked for. Eventually, Jack felt the change. He rose.

"Thank you for your time," he said. Lord Thann stood as well. Kathrine remained seated, watching him. Jack took two steps toward the door. Then he stopped. This was the moment Seraphine had warned him about. The point where restraint would be safest. Where leaving cleanly would preserve leverage. He felt the weight of the coat on his shoulders. But he remembered the water tearing through streets. Felt the pressure building where no one wanted to look. He didn't want to win, he wanted the city to succeed.

He turned back.

"There's something else," he said. They both looked at him now.

"I'm about to tell you something I can't prove yet," Jack continued, "and that I'm not powerful enough to control without help." Kathrine's expression tightened. Lord Thann's remained unreadable, but the room seemed to draw inward, attention narrowing.

"I'm offering this as a sign of good faith," Jack said quietly.

"To you, and to this city. If you believe me, you'll understand why silence is safer than disbelief. And why waiting costs more than acting." The fire popped, sharp in the stillness.
