June sat in a fairly large tent in some somewhat casual clothing; he was cupping a disposable cup full of lukewarm coffee in both his now immaculate hands and was covered in a blanket since the examiner said that he might go into shock with how much blood he lost. It seemed he woke up in some sort of military camp; he didn't get to see much since he was immediately dressed and thrown into the tent. He was still coming to his senses, but his new environment was interesting to him.
'This place is messy.'
"I know, right?" A woman's voice resounded from behind June; he didn't want to turn around to look since his blanket was on his head, and turning would make it fall off, so he just quietly cupped his lukewarm coffee and imagined the person behind the voice. Her voice was chill, icy even, but at the same time her cadence sounded like someone who was laid back; she sounded tired. He started to think about how she looked until she walked in front of him to sit at her desk.
He felt stupid for speculating how someone looked based off their voice, especially when he could have just turned to see them.
"You think too much." The woman's voice sounded amused.
'What?' What was she talking about? Could she read his mind? Was she some sort of Oracle? Or was he just thinking out loud?
"The first one, kid." She downed a cup of disposable coffee in one shot and tossed it into a growing pile among the littered floor. Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there.
'Wait, did she just say she can read my mind?'
'How?' He said the last bit to probe her a little. Was she really a mind reader?
"I'm a dreamer too, just like any other person here with weird powers; the person who set your arms was one; it's why they weren't putty and you 'lived' as long as you did." June contemplated what she said for a bit, then opened his mouth to talk.
"Dreamer?" The single word alone was almost harmonic; the woman's voice carried weight and legitimacy, while June's reformed vocal cords seemed to carry an impending, unavoidable truth. The woman seemed amused, a little taken aback by his voice. She was a tall woman, the first person he met or well talked to since being sent to this odd place.
Her business suit seemed a bit disheveled; her hair was in a bun that was coming undone; her face was a little pale; her eyes had deep bags under them, they were slanted a bit, so she looked a bit upset when her face was neutral; her eyebrows were fairly thin.
"Hey kid, this isn't the time to be evaluating my looks?" June looked a bit confused as to what she meant.
"Anyways, Dreamers by textbook are people who exert their will on the world, yada yada. They typically gain powers that channel a form of energy that the Dreamer possesses or harnesses, but pretty much you turn a fuel you possess or absorb and channel it to do things, and some people have things they're more inclined to and more capable of; think of it as a compatibility of will, soul, and mind."
June was the one now who looked a little amused, a little mournful too; he had met a lot of crackpots and crazies in his lifetime; it's a shame someone just a couple years older than him had fallen to one of those. The woman gave him a scathing glare.
"I'm not crazy."
"Your brain did leak out of your ears, literally."
"That's just the transformation of an aspirant to dreamer, well, minus the brain-leaking part; actually, the transformation is way more tame than what happened to you." June looked at her, still confused.
'What's an aspirant?'
"You know you can still talk with your mouth, right? You, my friend, are a bit of a special case; you went from mundane to dreamer, but one normally works towards becoming an aspirant by honing their will, then becomes a dreamer by bringing that will to the next step... Don't ask me though what that step is; it's different for everyone." June was wondering what this crazy lady was talking about. [Your affinity seems to be around body manipulation.] The woman spoke into his head. His coffee was cold.
