Chương 99: Chapter 88: Room to Leave

The first sign of Simon's marriage changing anything appeared on the assignment board. Nobody announced it. There was no congratulatory note from the guard command, no officer calling Simon aside to explain that marrying Mira had improved his political value. His name simply stopped appearing disproportionately on the western side. A market patrol. Two days at the eastern gate. One timber-road circuit. Warehouse duty. Then another ordinary boundary route. Joe stood before the board for several moments.

Daren joined him.

"You noticed."

"Yes." Simon arrived behind them.

"Noticed what?" Daren pointed. Simon read the week. His expression slowly changed.

"Oh." Joe looked at him. A year earlier, the pattern had moved in the opposite direction with equal subtlety. Edwin weakened. Bret complained. Garrick discovered that Simon was inexpensive to pressure. Western roads followed. Now Simon had married Mira.

The same village-born guard who had once depended on the goodwill surrounding Edwin's daughter was formally tied to Edwin's branch, possessed a future claim to a restricted Bone inheritance, and would increasingly become useful in dealings between the Black family and the guard. The calculation changed. So did the board. Simon frowned.

"I didn't ask for this." Daren shrugged.

"You didn't ask for the other thing either." That silenced him. Joe looked toward the administrative building. Garrick did not need to like Simon. He only needed to recognize that continuing the same petty pressure now created more trouble than satisfaction. Political protection was rarely a shield someone visibly raised. Usually, it was a number in another person's calculation.

The second change came from the Black family itself. Renford visited Edwin's residence two days before Edwin's departure. This time he brought documents instead of arguments. Joe was there because several state-capital supplier introductions involved medicines produced by the southern workshop. Renford placed three sealed letters on the table.

"Family introductions." Edwin examined the seals.

"You arranged all three?"

"Two. The elder arranged the third." Edwin looked genuinely surprised.

"Generous."

"Practical." That sounded more like Renford. He poured himself tea.

"If you establish better purchasing connections in the capital, Blackwood benefits."

"And if I remain there, you stop competing with me over local allocation."

"Yes." Edwin snorted faintly.

"At least you admit it." Renford looked almost amused.

"There is no reason to fight after winning." Joe watched Edwin. Months earlier, that sentence might have started another argument. Now Edwin merely nodded. Because Renford was right. He had become a true Martial Artist and gained a greater voice locally. Edwin had found a larger market where medicine and trade mattered more than fighting endlessly for the same Blackwood suppliers. Their conflict had not ended because someone surrendered. The resource overlap had ended. That was cleaner.

Edwin opened one of the letters.

"What happens to the southern workshop?"

"Still yours."

"My share?"

"Still yours."

"My people?"

"Your people." Renford paused.

"As long as you stop trying to manage northern procurement from three weeks away." This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Edwin laughed.

"No promises." Renford sighed. The argument was nearly affectionate now. Nearly.

After Renford left, Edwin remained at the table. Joe gathered the supplier documents.

"You should come with me." Joe stopped. That had been more direct than expected.

"To the capital?"

"No. To Green Hollow." Joe looked at him. Edwin looked back.

"Yes, the capital."

"When?"

"Two days."

"No." Edwin blinked.

"That was fast."

"I've considered it."

"You didn't know I was asking."

"I knew eventually somebody would." Edwin leaned back.

"Explain." Joe did.

"My cultivation isn't where I want it." True.

"My savings aren't where I want them." Also true.

"And my guard record is ridiculous." That earned a laugh. Officially, Joe's last formal assessment still sat at Skin Completion. Nobody who actually knew him believed he remained there. He had openly trained Muscle for years, and his work around the guard made that obvious. But Joe had avoided formal testing because formal numbers created expectations. That had been useful in Blackwood. It would become inconvenient elsewhere. Edwin tapped the table.

"That part, at least, I agree with."

"I should take a Muscle assessment before leaving."

"Completion?" Joe nodded. That would be believable. Talented. Fast. Not impossible. And still far beneath the truth. Edwin considered him.

"You could do that tomorrow."

"I could."

"So?" Joe smiled.

"I said before leaving." Edwin muttered something about impossible young men. Then became serious.

"The convoy is useful. Guards. Merchant papers. Family introductions. You would reach the capital cheaply." Joe knew. That was exactly why the offer was attractive. Traveling with Edwin would reduce risk, cost and uncertainty. But there was another reason to refuse. Joe wanted to know that when he left Blackwood, he could leave because he chose to, not because somebody else happened to have a wagon going east.

"I'll follow later."

"How much later?"

"Months, probably." Edwin stared.

"Bone?" Joe's expression did not change. Edwin had not meant the realm. He meant the general stage of Joe's martial preparation. Still, Joe answered carefully.

"When my body is ready for the next part of my plans." Edwin sighed.

"You speak like a seventy-year-old hiding inheritance disputes." Joe agreed.

"Useful habit."

Money helped make the decision easier. Joe reviewed everything that evening. Coin physically available. Workshop credit. Guard income. Expected medicine costs. His reserve sat a little above four gold. A few years earlier, four gold would have changed the economic position of the entire Green Hollow household. Now Joe looked at it and saw categories. One gold reserved for eventual Spiritual Root testing. Travel. Capital lodging. Emergency expenses. Information. Possible manuals.

Cultivation resources expensive enough that Blackwood prices might eventually seem cheap. Four gold could disappear surprisingly quickly if he arrived somewhere larger and began saying yes to everything useful. Five remained his minimum target. Preferably more. The temptation was obvious. Stop saving for three months. Spend everything on Bone. Advance faster. Then leave stronger.

One Effort Equals a Hundred made that strategy particularly attractive because every additional unit of good medicine could support far more effective cultivation than it would for someone ordinary. Joe rejected it. Strength created choices. So did money. He wanted both.

Bone V completed the night before Edwin left. Joe knew before checking the panel. The fifth tempering had settled more deeply than Bone IV. The obvious changes were diminishing, but the frame felt increasingly unified from heel to shoulder. He waited. No warehouse test that night. There was no need to turn every breakthrough into a number immediately. Instead, Joe walked slowly through the courtyard and observed how little restraint remained in ordinary movement.

Muscle Great Completion still held more power than Bone V allowed him to fully express. But the gap had narrowed considerably. Skin contained the increasingly violent movement beneath it without strain. Muscle contracted cleanly. Bone transmitted. Foundations aligned. The whole body worked as a structure rather than a collection of progressively stronger parts. That interested Joe more than another hundred kilograms. Because now he understood what would happen to someone whose layers did not match.

He still lacked enough examples to establish exact limits. But the principle was undeniable. His own path remained possible because every layer behind Bone had been pushed absurdly far first. Simon's path was different. That meant Simon's future advice had to be different too. Joe would not confuse the two.

Edwin left shortly after sunrise. The convoy contained three merchant wagons, one passenger carriage, six hired guards and four Black-family escorts. Mira came early. Simon came earlier. Joe suspected he had barely slept. Edwin inspected every wagon despite having people specifically employed to inspect wagons. Finally, he stood before Mira.

"You know where the household account is."

"Yes."

"Do not let Simon buy anything structural without asking someone who understands buildings." Simon looked offended.

"I built the training rack."

"It leans."

"It does not." Joe said, "It does." Simon turned.

"You helped fix it."

"Exactly." Mira laughed. Edwin hugged his daughter. Longer than he probably intended. Then stepped back and looked at Simon. Something in his expression changed. Not merchant. Not Black-family representative. Father.

"I'm trusting you." Simon lost the smile.

"I know."

"No. You understand the words." Edwin held his gaze.

"You'll understand the rest later." Simon nodded.

"I'll take care of her." Mira sighed.

"I am standing here." Neither man listened. Edwin finally turned to him.

"Last chance."

"No."

"The capital has better medicine."

"I know."

"Better manuals."

"I know."

"Better food." Joe hesitated. Edwin noticed.

"Ah."

"Still no." Edwin laughed.

"Fine. Send word before you come."

"If possible."

"Joe."

"I'll send word."

"Better." Then he climbed into the carriage.

Renford arrived as the convoy was preparing to move. No entourage. Only one family guard. He exchanged a few words with Edwin through the carriage window and handed him another sealed packet. Then, surprisingly, he approached Simon.

"You'll be handling some local coordination for Edwin?" Simon looked uncertain.

"Some."

"Good." Renford's attention moved briefly to Mira.

"If a family matter overlaps the guard, ask before promising anything." Simon nodded.

"Edwin told me the same."

"Then for once listen to him." Renford left. Joe watched him go. There was another change. Simon was not becoming a Black-family decision-maker. But he was becoming someone the family expected to communicate with. That expectation alone had value.

Garrick confirmed it the following week. A Black-family caravan requested a route adjustment because repairs had blocked part of the eastern market road. The guard needed to approve the change. Normally an officer would communicate with a family steward. Instead, Garrick summoned Simon. Joe heard afterward.

"What did he want?" Simon sat down with his dinner.

"Asked which alternate route would interfere least with the medicine warehouses."

"And?"

"I told him."

"Anything else?"

"No." Simon ate two bites. Joe smiled slightly. Tiny things. That was where changes usually began. Garrick had not become Simon's friend. He had not apologized for the western assignments. He had simply updated his calculation. Simon now had enough connections that disrespecting him casually was less useful than working with him. The political table had tilted again.

Bret reacted worse. Joe saw him outside the southern tavern one evening. Brown coat. Old boots. Lowered shoulder. Different walk. Bret did not recognize him. He was already drinking. One of the red-cord men was not with him anymore. The broad warehouse fighter was. Bret complained about Simon for several minutes. Not about Mira this time. About people suddenly treating Simon like he mattered. Joe listened from another table.

"He marries one woman and now officers ask his opinion." The broad man drank.

"He's a guard. She's Black family. Makes sense."

"He's village trash."

"So are half the guard." Bret glared. The man shrugged. Bret's problem had become clearer. It was not only Simon. It was movement. Simon had been someone Bret could look down on. Then Simon survived. Improved. Built connections. Married upward. Became harder to push. Bret experienced another man's progress as something being stolen from him. That kind of resentment rarely disappeared on its own. Joe finished his food. Bret did nothing worth acting on that evening. So, Joe left. That too was important.

Disguise did not exist only to make violence easier. Sometimes it prevented unnecessary violence by replacing assumptions with information.

At the end of the month, Joe added another thirty silver to his reserve. Closer to five gold. Bone VI had begun. His official Muscle assessment still waited. Simon was married. Mira was secure in Blackwood. Edwin was traveling east. Renford no longer had reason to squeeze Edwin locally. Even Garrick had begun treating Simon as a useful connection rather than an inexpensive target. One by one, the reasons Joe had once needed to remain close to his brother were weakening.

Not because Simon had become stronger than Joe. He never would. That was not the point. Simon was becoming strong enough, connected enough and established enough to carry his own life. Joe sat beside the open window and listened to Blackwood settling into night. Leaving no longer felt like abandoning something unfinished. Increasingly, it felt like the next thing that needed to happen.
