Chương 101: Chapter 90: Enough

Bone VII was the first tempering that made Joe poorer. Not poor. But for several years his income had generally risen alongside his cultivation expenses. The workshop grew, his share increased, guard pay continued arriving, and whenever medicine became more expensive Joe usually had enough additional income to absorb it. The seventh Bone tempering broke that pattern. Edwin's workshop manager placed the supplier list in front of him. Joe read the total. Then read it again.

"That much?"

"You asked for the better grade."

"I did."

"You also asked me not to replace it with the cheaper mixture without permission." Joe looked at the number. Unfortunately, he remembered saying that too. Bone VII demanded subtler refinement than the earlier passes. Common strengthening medicines still helped recovery, but one of the better bone-nourishing preparations produced a noticeably cleaner response during the deepest part of circulation. The difference was not dramatic. That made the decision harder.

Thirty-eight additional silver for something that did not double progress, unlock a realm or produce an obvious breakthrough. It simply made an already difficult process safer and more efficient. Years ago, Joe might have rejected it immediately. Now he asked a different question.

"How much time would the cheaper preparation cost?" The manager shrugged.

"You know your body better than I do." Fair. Joe did the calculation himself. Several additional recovery cycles. Possibly weeks. More importantly, less consistent adaptation between Bone and the surrounding tissues. He signed the purchase. His accessible savings dropped below five gold again. Joe disliked seeing that. He bought the medicine anyway.

For two days the missing silver bothered him more than it should have. Then Joe remembered why he had built the reserve in the first place. This was exactly what it was for - to make himself stronger. He still intended to rebuild it. But refusing to spend useful savings simply to preserve the number would defeat the point of having them.

Bone VII itself progressed slowly. Slowly for Joe, at least. One Effort Equals a Hundred still made every valid circulation absurdly productive, but there was increasingly little crude weakness left to correct. The work had become structural precision. One region of the pelvis distributing force slightly less evenly. A subtle weakness near a transition into the spine. Tiny differences between left and right under heavy rotation.

The deeper he went, the more ridiculous his earlier habit of thinking about realms as separate layers seemed. Nothing was separate. Bone VII changed how Muscle pulled. Muscle changed how force reached Skin. Foundations determined whether that entire chain aligned properly. Joe still did not know the exact limits an ordinary practitioner faced when repeating tempering. He now knew those limits had to exist. That question could wait. His own structure remained balanced.

A road repair near the eastern market forced two Black-family medicine wagons onto a route normally reserved for guard supply traffic. Nobody wanted another argument at the gate. So, the lieutenant called Simon before the wagons even arrived. Simon returned that evening irritated.

"They asked me where the family wanted the wagons sent." Joe looked up.

"And?"

"I told them."

"Problem solved."

"That isn't the point."

"What is?" Simon struggled for several seconds.

"I don't work for the Black family." Mira, seated across the room, looked at him. Simon corrected himself immediately.

"I mean—I don't work for them like that." Mira smiled. Joe continued eating.

"You understand both sides."

"So?"

"So, people dislike unnecessary conversations." Simon frowned. Mira said, "My father told you this would happen."

"He said sometimes."

"It has happened twice."

"That is still sometimes." Joe looked toward Mira. She shook her head. Marriage had apparently not cured Simon. Probably for the best.

The guard noticed his usefulness too. That became obvious several days later. Joe was leaving the medical room when he heard Garrick's voice from the administrative courtyard.

"Vale." Simon stopped. Joe slowed without meaning to. Garrick carried a patrol sheet.

"Black medicine convoy on the north road tomorrow. Family requested an earlier gate window." Simon nodded.

"I heard."

"Can they actually make it?"

"If they leave when their steward says they will." Garrick gave him a look. Simon smiled sheepishly.

"So probably not."

"Find out. I don't want six wagons blocking morning traffic because someone guessed."

"I'll ask Mira."

"Do that." The conversation ended. Simple. Professional. Months earlier, Garrick had used the same authority to make Simon's life more difficult. Now he used Simon because Simon saved him work. Joe found the reversal almost elegant. Then Bret entered the courtyard. He had heard enough. His face tightened.

"You ask him now?" Garrick turned. Simon went still. Bret continued before anyone answered.

"You spent months saying he needed harder duty." Garrick's expression changed. Joe recognized that look. Not anger yet. Warning.

"This isn't your concern." Bret laughed once.

"Of course not." Simon started to leave. Bret looked toward him.

"Easy roads again?" Garrick's voice hardened.

"Enough." The courtyard went quiet. Bret looked at his father. For perhaps the first time, Joe saw genuine surprise. Garrick stepped closer.

"Vale has a clean service record, leads his team adequately and now handles several matters that reduce work for this office." Bret's jaw tightened.

"He filed against me."

"He filed an accurate patrol report." That was new. Bret stared. Garrick continued.

"You received your warning. The matter ended."

"You didn't act like it ended." Garrick's eyes narrowed. For a moment neither spoke. Then Garrick said quietly, "Do not confuse decisions I made as an officer with permission for you to carry a personal feud indefinitely." Joe became very still. There. A boundary. Garrick had protected Bret. Had pressured Simon. Had abused enough discretion that Joe would never pretend otherwise. But even Garrick believed the matter should have ended. Bret looked around the courtyard. Too many people had heard. His face darkened.

"So, he wins." Garrick's expression became almost tired.

"There is nothing to win." Bret left. No dramatic exit. No threat. He simply walked away too quickly. Simon looked toward Joe. Joe said nothing. Neither did Garrick. The workday continued.

That conversation changed Joe's understanding of the conflict. Not his opinion of Garrick. Garrick had still made his earlier choices. Competence did not erase them. But Bret's later behavior could no longer be treated as an extension of his father's will. The hired men. The public provocation. The obsession with Simon's changing status. Those belonged increasingly to Bret himself. Joe preferred accurate categories. Especially when deciding what to do about people.

Bone VII completed several weeks later. Joe waited a full seven days before testing. The strengthening medicine had been worth the silver. Integration after the final circulation was cleaner than Bone VI had been, with less uneven stress around the hips and shoulders. He returned to the freight warehouse late at night. Eighteen hundred kilograms rose steadily. Joe added more. Nineteen hundred. Then two thousand. For the first time, the number itself made him stop. Two tons. He held the frame for several breaths.

Muscle Great Completion finally worked hard throughout the entire chain. Bone carried it. Skin contained it. His feet remained stable beneath the load. Joe lowered the frame. He could probably lift more. He did not. Two thousand kilograms told him enough. He remembered struggling to understand what four hundred kilograms meant when ordinary Muscle Completion had still looked distant. Blackwood's normal martial measurements had become too small to describe what he was building. That was useful.

It was also another reason to leave eventually.

His savings recovered more slowly. Workshop income replaced part of what Bone VII had consumed. Guard pay added a little. Joe resumed setting aside thirty silver when practical. He did not force it during expensive months. By the end of autumn, his accessible reserve sat just under five gold again. Close enough. Joe no longer cared about crossing the exact number every month. Save when possible. Spend when worthwhile. Never become dependent merely because advancement was exciting. That was a better rule.

Bret disappeared from the guard compound for three days. Officially, leave. Nobody cared enough to explain further. On the fourth evening, Joe used Disguise again. Different coat this time. Different gait. No brown-clothed laborer that anyone might associate with the earlier incident. He entered the southern tavern shortly after dark. Bret was there. So was the broad warehouse man. The red-cord man sat farther away than usual. Interesting. Joe ordered food and listened for nearly an hour.

Then Bret drank enough that volume replaced caution.

"My own father." The broad man sighed.

"You've said that."

"He stood there defending him."

"He told you to stop."

"Same thing."

"No." Bret glared. The broad man drank.

"I liked you better when you paid for drinks instead of repeating the same story." Bret did not look happy.

"My father thinks because Vale married into the Blacks, everyone has to bend."

"He married the girl."

"He's still nobody." The red-cord man spoke from farther down the table.

"Doesn't look like nobody anymore." That silenced Bret. Only briefly.

"Everyone thinks I need my father." The broad man looked at him.

"You use his name every time something goes wrong." A dangerous truth to tell a drunk man. Bret stood. The chair scraped backward. For a moment Joe thought a fight would begin. It didn't. Bret threw several coins onto the table.

"I don't need anybody." He walked out. The broad man watched him leave. Then shook his head.

"Idiot." Joe agreed. He waited before leaving. Outside, autumn wind moved cold through the warehouse streets. Bret was already gone. Joe did not follow. Not tonight. But something had changed. Garrick had told him to stop. His drinking companions were tired of the feud. The men he had once hired had already learned that Simon was not as unprotected as Bret believed. Every exit remained open. Bret simply disliked all of them. Joe adjusted his unfamiliar coat and walked home.

Some people became dangerous because they had no choice. Others became dangerous because they kept refusing the reasonable ones. He suspected Bret was becoming the second kind.
