Chương 96: Chapter 85: Different Roads

Deepwinter returned quietly. The first frost appeared on Blackwood's western roofs before sunrise, thin enough to disappear by midday but persistent enough that merchants finally stopped pretending autumn remained. Joe noticed because Simon began complaining about cold mornings again.

"You don't feel this?"

"Not much."

"I hate you." Joe continued eating. Years after Skin Great Completion, cold like this had become an inconvenience rather than a problem. Simon still needed thicker gloves during morning duty. Across the table, he was studying a folded sheet of paper. Joe looked at it. Simon immediately folded it smaller.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"That was suspicious."

"It is private." Joe returned to his breakfast. Several breaths passed. Simon unfolded it again. Joe waited. Finally, Simon said, "How much does a decent house cost near the eastern district?" Joe looked up. There it was.

"What size?" Simon frowned.

"Normal."

"That is not a size."

"A house."

"Still not a size." Simon put the paper down.

"Two rooms. Maybe three. Small courtyard."

"For you?"

"No." Joe looked at him. Simon sighed.

"Eventually."

"Mira." Simon pointed his spoon.

"You enjoy this too much."

The question stayed with him. Not because Simon was thinking about marriage. That had become increasingly obvious. What interested Joe was the house. Simon was no longer imagining his future as a guard bunk, rented courtyard or temporary assignment. He was thinking about staying. Building something. Joe had spent the past year thinking increasingly about leaving. The contrast was difficult to miss.

Edwin raised the larger issue several days later. Joe arrived at the medicine hall after morning duty and found a visitor leaving the rear office. The man wore travel clothes too expensive for an ordinary merchant and carried a token Joe did not recognize. Edwin waited until the courtyard gate closed.

"State capital." Joe looked back toward the gate.

"Merchant?"

"Medicine consortium." That was interesting. Edwin poured tea.

"They want somebody who understands provincial suppliers but isn't already tied to one of the major capital houses."

"You."

"Apparently my irritating personality has finally become valuable." Joe sat.

"What do they want?"

"Consulting initially. Procurement management if it works." The position sounded larger than Edwin's current operation. Probably much larger.

"Would you go?" Edwin did not answer immediately. That was an answer by itself. Joe looked toward the courtyard.

"Mira."

"Yes." There it was. Edwin rubbed his thumb along the edge of the cup.

"The capital isn't Blackwood." Joe knew. He had never been there, but everything he had learned pointed in the same direction. More money. More practitioners. More institutions. Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. More opportunities. More ways to disappear beneath someone stronger. Edwin continued.

"Here, the Black name protects her before I even ask. There, our family is known but known is not the same as powerful."

"You would be building from below."

"Exactly." Joe understood the concern. Edwin was wealthy by Blackwood standards. Useful within his family. Connected. In the state capital, those advantages would shrink. Mira would go from being the protected daughter of an established local branch to one young woman among far larger powers.

"So don't take her." Edwin looked at him. Joe continued calmly.

"She has family here."

"That is not the same as having me here."

"No." Joe thought about Simon.

"It could become enough." Edwin's eyes narrowed slightly. He understood immediately. Neither said the name.

Renford came to the medicine hall that afternoon. Joe had seen him only twice before. He looked younger than Joe expected for a newly advanced true Martial Artist, perhaps in his forties, with the controlled ease of someone whose body had crossed the Internal Organ threshold. Edwin's expression became perfectly polite. That alone told Joe plenty.

"Cousin."

"Edwin." Renford looked toward Joe.

"The medicine boy."

"Partner," Edwin said. Joe almost smiled. Renford did.

"So I've heard." The conversation that followed was surprisingly civil. Northern contracts. Supplier transition. Inventory responsibility. No insults. No threats. Eventually Renford mentioned the state-capital offer. Edwin's expression barely changed.

"You heard quickly."

"It concerns the family."

"Everything concerns the family when people want information." Renford ignored that.

"If you accept, the northern allocation becomes simpler." There it was. Not triumph. Practicality. Edwin leaned back.

"You want the remainder."

"I want one branch responsible for it."

"And conveniently yours."

"Very." Joe watched them. Months ago, Edwin had treated Renford's rise as a threat. Now Joe saw the conflict more clearly. They wanted overlapping things. Suppliers. Influence. Recognition from the elders. Renford becoming a true Martial Artist had tilted the contest. But if Edwin left Blackwood for the capital, much of the contest disappeared. Renford did not need Edwin ruined. He needed him elsewhere. Edwin seemed to realize the same thing.

"If I accepted the capital position, I would still retain financial interests here."

"Obviously."

"No interference with the southern workshop."

"Provided it remains under the current family agreements." Edwin smiled faintly.

"Reasonable." Joe noticed the change. They were no longer fighting over who would dominate the same territory. They were negotiating separation. That was much easier.

After Renford left, Edwin remained quiet. Joe waited. Finally, Edwin said, "I dislike when sensible solutions benefit people who irritate me."

"You dislike many things."

"Yes." He looked toward the door.

"If I go, Renford gets what he wants."

"Locally."

"And I stop wasting years fighting him over increasingly smaller pieces."

"Yes." Edwin looked at Joe.

"You sound as if you've already decided for me."

"No." A pause.

"I think you already decided." Edwin's expression suggested Joe was becoming intolerable again. Then he laughed.

"Perhaps."

Simon arrived that evening. Mira was with him. They had clearly been arguing. Not seriously. Simon carried two shopping bundles. Mira carried none. Joe understood the subject immediately.

"You don't have to carry everything," Mira said.

"I know."

"Then give me one."

"No."

"Why?" Simon considered.

"I am cultivating Muscle." Mira stared. Joe looked away. Edwin closed his eyes.

"That explanation cannot possibly make sense even to you." Simon looked around the room and seemed to realize he had lost all allies. He handed Mira one bundle. Joe wondered how someone capable of directing guards in a forest could become this stupid inside one courtyard.

Dinner became more serious. Edwin mentioned the capital offer. Mira stopped eating. Simon did too.

"For how long?" she asked.

"Possibly permanent." Silence. Simon looked toward her. Edwin continued.

"I haven't accepted." Mira asked, "Would we all go?" Edwin's eyes moved briefly toward Simon. Joe noticed. So did Simon. Maybe Mira did not.

"I don't know." That was the honest answer. The capital offered Edwin opportunity. It did not automatically offer Mira safety. Simon remained quiet for almost a minute. Then asked, "Would you want Mira to stay here?" Edwin looked at him. The question had changed the room.

"Under the right circumstances." Mira finally understood where the conversation was going. Her face warmed slightly. Simon somehow became paler. Joe became very interested in his food. Edwin continued calmly.

"The Black family is here. Her home is here. Most of the people she has known her entire life are here." Simon nodded. Edwin looked directly at him.

"But staying requires stability." Simon swallowed.

"Yes." No jokes now. Good.

Later, while Mira helped the housekeeper upstairs, Edwin stopped Simon before he could leave. Joe was still in the room. He considered leaving. Edwin said, "Stay." Joe did. Simon looked increasingly uncomfortable. Edwin folded his hands.

"You're serious about my daughter." It was not phrased as a question. Simon answered anyway.

"Yes."

"Good." Simon blinked. That had apparently not been the expected opening. Edwin continued.

"I've known that for some time." Joe suspected everyone in Blackwood had.

"What I don't know is what you intend to do about it." Simon looked toward Joe. Joe refused to help. This was not a forest beast. He had to survive it himself.

"I want to marry her." There. Direct. Edwin did not react dramatically.

"How soon?" Simon hesitated.

"When she's ready." Better answer. Edwin's expression softened slightly.

"And when you're ready?" Simon looked at his hands.

"I've been saving." Joe remembered the house question. That explained it.

"How much?" Simon named the amount. Not enormous. Respectable for a guard his age. Edwin nodded.

"You've done better than I expected." Simon seemed unsure whether that was praise. Then Edwin said something more important.

"Marriage would change your position." Simon looked up.

"With Mira?"

"With the family." The room became quieter.

"You would still not become a Black by blood. Don't misunderstand that." Simon nodded.

"But you would become attached to my branch formally. Your obligations would increase."

"What obligations?"

"Household protection. Certain family duties. Discretion regarding business. Sometimes representation." Simon looked slightly confused by the last word. Edwin explained.

"You are a guard. You understand how the guard thinks. You understand village people better than most of my relatives. And people already know you are close to this household." Joe understood immediately. Negotiator. Bridge. Not powerful enough to command the Black family. Useful enough to speak between groups that did not naturally understand one another. Edwin continued.

"There would also be benefits." Simon did not ask. That impressed Joe. Edwin noticed too.

"One of them eventually concerns your cultivation." Now Simon looked up. Joe did too. Edwin's voice remained measured.

"Bone inheritance is not given to a daughter's boyfriend. But, it may be given to a son-in-law whose future is tied to the branch." That landed. Simon had been wondering about Bone since Alex advanced. Joe knew.

"Internal Organs?" Simon asked quietly. Edwin shook his head immediately.

"No." No hesitation.

"That inheritance is tightly controlled. Even many descendants of side branches will never receive it." Simon nodded. He did not look offended. Good. Edwin continued.

"Bone is different. Still restricted. Still contractual. But possible." For Simon, that was enormous. Muscle no longer had to be the end of his road. Not because Joe gave him anything. Because Simon had built a place for himself. Joe liked that much more.

They walked home in silence. Simon lasted half the journey. Then—"Bone." Joe looked unfazed.

"Yes."

"Actual Bone."

"Potentially." Simon frowned.

"Don't ruin this."

"Edwin said eventually."

"I heard him."

"You looked like you stopped breathing."

"I did not." Joe remembered exactly.

"You did." Simon ignored him. After another minute he said, "I could bring Mother here." Joe looked over. Simon continued more slowly.

"Not immediately. But if I had a house. Better guard position. Mira…" He gestured vaguely, unable to fit the future into one sentence. Joe understood anyway. Pam. Mary. The rest of Green Hollow. Simon was not thinking about leaving Blackwood anymore. He was thinking about bringing his world into it. Joe looked toward the distant western wall. His own thoughts moved in the opposite direction. State capital. Root testing. Better cultivation knowledge. Larger markets. Stronger people. Different roads.

For years, the brothers had walked almost the same one. Perhaps that had never been meant to last. Joe found the thought less uncomfortable than expected. Simon might not need to follow him. That was not abandonment. It might be success.

Before sleeping, Joe checked his savings. Then his cultivation resources. Then the quiet progression of Bone IV. Money. Strength. Information. Mobility. He had spent years accumulating all four. Simon was beginning to accumulate something different. A household. A position. A family connection. A place people expected him to remain. Both were forms of security. Joe closed the strongbox. One brother was learning how to leave. The other was learning how to stay.
