Simon's team had stopped receiving warehouse duty entirely by late spring. Nobody announced the change. Their names simply moved farther down the western assignment board. "I'm—""Stay down." Something in Joe's voice ended the argument. The stag lowered its head again. Joe watched its front legs. Its weight. The turn. The uneven ground between them. Part of his mind still observed automatically. How quickly it accelerated. How the shoulders transferred force. How much weight those legs carried without collapse. Then Joe looked once at Simon. Blood at the corner of his mouth. One arm held tight against his ribs. Conscious. Breathing. Probably nothing immediately fatal.

The stag started forward again. Joe stopped studying it. The change inside him was surprisingly quiet. The animal had become a problem. Problems did not require anger. They required solutions. "I am."

"That was fast." Joe did not look up.

"Did you kill it?"

"Yes."
