Joe's strength continued increasing. Slowly. That was the important part. "That too." Theodere tapped his own forearm.

"Muscle recovers quickly. You overwork it, you usually know. Bones can tolerate stupidity longer."

"Until it doesn't."

"Exactly." That matched medicine. Repeated stress could strengthen structure within limits. Beyond those limits, small damage accumulated before obvious failure. Joe listened carefully. Theodere was permitted to explain preparation, broad circulation principles and common errors. He was not permitted to teach the actual inherited sequence he had given Alex. Joe did not push. Every time Theodere reached the edge of what he could legally reveal, Joe changed the question. Not: Where does the method move next?

Instead:"Why do most methods temper load-bearing bones before smaller structures?" Or:"Why do some practitioners fail at the joints?" Those questions produced answers. Partial ones. Still useful. By the fourth evening, Joe had learned something important. Bone methods differed in route. They did not differ randomly. Certain principles appeared repeatedly. Progress from structures accustomed to load toward more delicate regions. Do not force circulation through a joint merely because neighboring bones tolerate it.

Still connected village recruits to cheaper suppliers. But his confidence had thickened. People waited when he spoke now. Alex had noticed. Joe approached him after one evening meeting.

"I want to watch your Bone training." Alex laughed.

"No."

"Not the method." Alex stopped. Joe continued.

"Normal conditioning. Striking. Load work. Anything not restricted."

"Why?"

"Because you're Bone."

"You know other Bone practitioners."

"They don't like me enough to let me stare at them for an hour." Alex considered this.

"Fair." He agreed. For the next week Joe watched three sessions. Alex never exposed Blood Energy circulation. He did not need to. The physical differences told Joe plenty. Impact traveled through him more cleanly. Heavy resistance that would force a Muscle practitioner to brace in stages could be accepted through the whole frame. But something else stood out. Alex was still adapting. His Bone breakthrough had occurred recently, and his body had not finished learning how to exploit it.

That resembled Joe's post-Great-Completion integration. Different layer. Same broad principle. Advancement changed capacity first. Efficient use followed. On the last day, Alex caught him looking at his stance.

"Figure it out?"

"Partly." Alex smiled.

"You think too much."

"Usually."

"You know, if you stayed closer to Mutual Help, I could probably speak to Theo again." Joe looked at him. Alex continued casually.

"People are more willing to open doors for someone clearly committed to the group." There it was. Not a demand. Not quite. An offer wrapped around an expectation. Joe smiled.

"I'll keep it in mind." Alex seemed satisfied. Joe was not offended. Information was useful even when it revealed the person giving it. Fourth fragment.

The fifth came from someone who had failed. His name was Oran Pell. Retired guard. Sixty-three. Former Bone practitioner. Joe found him through one of Edwin's suppliers after asking about old martial injuries. Oran ran a small rope-and-leather shop near the southern wall and walked with a slight stiffness on his left side.

"You want to know how I ruined my Bone road?" He sounded amused. Joe sat opposite him.

"Yes."

"At least you're direct." Oran had reached Bone in his thirties through a purchased method assembled from three copied manuscripts. That sounded familiar enough to make Joe pay closer attention.

"The method worked," Oran said.

"For a while?"

"Years." That was more interesting.

"Then what failed?"

"I thought because each part worked, all the parts belonged together." Joe became still. Oran tapped his left hip.

"They didn't." There. That was the danger Joe had been looking for. A collection of individually valid instructions could still form an invalid whole. Fragments were not enough. "Still official territory," Simon said.

"Yes."

"Still maintained."

"Mostly." Simon sat.

"Bret's name isn't on it." Joe looked at him.

"Why would it be?" Simon gave him a flat stare.

"Optimism." Joe almost smiled. The assignment was not suicidal. It was the next step. Exactly what Garrick had been doing all year. Move them outward slowly enough that every individual assignment remained defensible. Joe folded the sheet.

"When?"

"Three days." Enough time.

That night Joe laid everything out in his head. Not on paper. Never on paper. Theodere's principles. Medical failures. Guard reports. Alex's movement. Oran's warning. His own anatomical knowledge. Perfected Foundations. Years of Blood Energy practice. Past Life Memory let him compare every detail without distortion. He rejected routes that depended on assumptions he could not verify. Joe adjusted one transition. Then another. On the third night, something settled. Not in his bones. In his understanding. He opened the panel. A new line had appeared. Three days from now, Simon's team would spend a night beyond the routes they usually walked. And for the first time, Joe possessed a Bone method he trusted enough to begin testing. He would not begin before the mission. Starting a new realm immediately before entering deeper forest would be stupid. Joe had spent too much time studying other people's mistakes to create such an obvious one himself. Bone could wait. The forest would not.
