Joe registered for a Muscle Completion assessment near the end of summer. The clerk looked at his file. Then at him. Then back at the file.

"Skin Completion?"

"Yes."

"You haven't tested since?"

"No." The clerk slowly lowered the page.

"You have been openly training Muscle for almost two years."

"Approximately."

"And nobody made you test?" Joe considered.

"Apparently not." The clerk stared. Joe smiled. That did not improve matters. By afternoon, Simon knew. By evening, half his team knew. Joe suspected Cole.

"I heard it from Daren," Cole insisted. Daren looked at him.

"I heard it from you." Cole pointed at the ceiling.

"Information moves strangely." Simon ignored both of them.

"You finally decided to stop pretending?" Joe looked over.

"Pretending what?"

"That you're barely stronger than when you were fifteen."

"I have never said that."

"You also never corrected anyone."

"Usually unnecessary." Simon shook his head.

"You're going to pass."

"Yes." The certainty made Simon pause. Then he laughed.

"Right. Stupid question."

The assessment took place two mornings later. Halven conducted it. Garrick attended because senior officers periodically reviewed advancement assessments for active guards. Joe had expected that possibility. It changed nothing. The first section tested Blood Energy circulation through the Muscle layer. Easy. Too easy. Joe had spent years moving Blood Energy through muscle before progressing into Bone. His problem was not making the circulation clean. His problem was making it merely good.

He deliberately slowed several transitions and allowed enough visible concentration that the result looked like it was practiced rather than effortless. Halven watched it closely.

"Again." Joe repeated it.

"Other side." Again. Halven's eyebrows rose.

"Clean." Garrick said nothing. The second portion involved control under fatigue. Repeated stance transitions. Weighted carries. Short movement sequences. Joe kept his breathing heavier than necessary and allowed his shoulders to tense slightly during the final repetition. Not enough to look weak. Enough to look human. That part of concealment had changed. Years ago, Joe had tried to remain forgettable. Now forgettable would itself look suspicious.

An eighteen-year-old guard who had trained under Theodere, worked beside Edwin, openly cultivated for years and possessed unusually good Foundations should not struggle through Muscle Completion. So, Joe did not struggle. He performed like a talented young man who deserved to pass. No more. The final test was strength. Halven gestured toward the loading frame.

"Start." Joe did. Three hundred kilograms. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Easy. Three-fifty. Four hundred. Halven watched his posture rather than the weights. Joe let four hundred look comfortable. At four-forty, he showed effort. That number had once represented the rough upper end of ordinary Muscle Completion. Now it felt almost absurdly light.

"Again," Halven said. Joe lifted it. Held. Lowered. Halven looked toward Garrick. Garrick finally spoke.

"Four-sixty." Interesting. The additional weight changed nothing physically. He changed his face instead. A deeper breath. More visible bracing. The frame rose. Joe held it briefly and lowered it with controlled effort. Halven nodded. Garrick continued watching.

"You've been delaying this assessment."

"Yes."

"Why?" Joe wiped his hands.

"Didn't need it." Garrick's eyes narrowed slightly. That was truthful enough to be irritating. Halven laughed.

"Congratulations. Muscle Completion." The clerk marked the record. Just like that, nearly two years of public ambiguity disappeared beneath a few lines of ink. Joe — Muscle Completion. Eighteen years old. Strong Foundations. Medical auxiliary. Talented. Unusual, perhaps. Not impossible. Joe liked the record much more than he expected.

Simon celebrated harder than Joe did.

"You're buying dinner."

"Why?"

"You advanced."

"I advanced a long time ago." Simon stopped. Joe realized the wording half a second late.

"Into Muscle," he added. Simon stared. Joe continued walking.

"You are terrible at celebrating."

"That is unrelated."

"You are buying dinner." Joe eventually did. Mira joined them. So did Mary, who had come to Blackwood again for several weeks to help Mira after the wedding and investigate work opportunities before returning to Green Hollow with news for the family. Simon announced Joe's assessment as though Joe had personally conquered the realm that morning. Mira looked genuinely pleased.

"Muscle Completion at eighteen is excellent." Joe nodded.

"It went well." Simon looked at her.

"He said that like he passed a handwriting test." Mary asked, "What happens next?" Simon answered first.

"Bone." Joe drank his tea. Mary looked toward him.

"When?"

"Eventually." Simon groaned. Mira laughed. Joe preferred questions from people who accepted vague answers.

The assessment changed small things. His guard pay did not suddenly double. He did not become an officer. But the types of duty he could officially be assigned broadened, and several guards who had treated his martial skill as uncertain began speaking as though his talent had now become real because a clerk wrote it down. Joe found that fascinating. Nothing inside his body had changed. The world had. Records were another kind of power. Not martial. Not financial. Institutional.

A piece of paper could not make Joe stronger. It could make other people behave differently around the strength they believed he possessed.

Alex found him after Mutual Help's next evening meeting.

"Muscle Completion." Joe nodded.

"Congratulations."

"Thank you." Alex had settled into Bone enough that his advancement no longer dominated every conversation, but his position inside Mutual Help continued growing. Younger guards listened when he spoke. Village recruits asked him about loans, training and assignments. Elise still managed much of the actual recordkeeping, yet Alex increasingly became the person people expected to make decisions.

"You should come to the advanced training evenings," Alex said.

"What happens there?"

"Bone preparation. Senior guards. People approaching Muscle Completion."

"I've already prepared for Bone." Alex tried to convince again.

"So have many people who don't know what they're missing." Joe did not argue. That would require explaining far too much.

"What does joining require?"

"Nothing formal." Joe waited. Alex knew him well enough to sigh.

"Regular participation. Help new members when needed. Society priorities if two requests conflict." There it was. Not unreasonable. Also, not nothing.

"What kind of priorities?"

"Escort work. Medicine access. Introductions." Joe thought about the earlier caravan dispute with Teren. Alex noticed.

"You still think I was wrong about that."

"I think repaid help stops being debt."

"Communities don't work if everyone keeps exact accounts."

"Then don't call it debt." Alex's expression tightened slightly. Not anger. Irritation.

"We're trying to build something larger than individual favors."

"That may be useful."

"May?" Joe stated.

"I already have training." Alex studied him for several seconds. Then nodded.

"Offer stays open." He left. Joe watched him go. Alex was still useful. Still generous in many situations. Also increasingly comfortable deciding what other people's obligations should be. That would become a problem if nothing checked it. Not today.

Bone VI completed as summer began yielding to early autumn. The sixth tempering did not produce a dramatic breakthrough. By now Joe expected that. The deeper he progressed, the less improvement resembled adding something new and the more it resembled removing tiny inefficiencies from a system that had already become extraordinary. The frame accepted force more uniformly. Small weak transitions disappeared. Repeated impacts during training left less localized fatigue.

Muscle Great Completion could express more of itself without Joe consciously moderating the load. He did not test immediately. Instead, he gave the body nearly a week. Perfect Body needed time to integrate what Blood Energy had changed, and Joe had learned not to confuse the end of tempering with the end of adaptation. When he finally returned to the warehouse, sixteen hundred kilograms rose cleanly. Seventeen hundred followed. At eighteen hundred, his entire body worked. Skin held. Muscle contracted.

Bone transmitted. The load rose. Joe held it briefly before lowering it. One point eight tons. Controlled. He did not attempt more. Bone VI was enough information.

His savings crossed five gold that same month. Barely. Joe sat alone in the workshop office after closing and reviewed the accounts twice. Physical coin. Workshop credit available on demand. Guard pay already received. Obligations deducted. Cultivation expenses paid. A little above five gold remained accessible. The number was satisfying. It was not large. That distinction became easier now. One gold belonged mentally to the eventual Root test. Another protected travel and the first stretch of capital living.

Another existed for emergencies. The remaining money had to cover information, cultivation, housing deposits, equipment, opportunities he could not predict and the simple fact that everything in the state capital apparently cost more. Five gold did not make Joe rich. It made him difficult to corner immediately. That was what he wanted. He folded the accounts. The next target did not need to be six. Money existed to create options, not become another cultivation realm.

From now until departure, he would keep saving, but he would not delay a genuinely useful opportunity merely to protect a round number. That felt healthier.

A letter from Edwin arrived a week later. The state capital was treating him well enough that his handwriting had become more annoyed. Joe interpreted that as success. The consortium had extended the original arrangement. Edwin had found a residence. Medicine prices were higher. So were profits. Several Black family introductions had proved useful. At the bottom, he had added a note for Joe. Your room will not be free. I refuse to let you become comfortable enough to stay in my house for ten years. Joe laughed.

Simon leaned over.

"He offered you a room?"

"At a price."

"That sounds like Edwin." Joe read the next line. Come after you have enough money to ignore my offer. Then you may use it. That sounded even more like Edwin. Joe folded the letter. Five gold. Official Muscle Completion. Bone VI. Contact in the capital. The list of reasons he could not leave was becoming shorter.

The guard courtyard provided one reminder that not everything had settled. Bret was reading the assessment board when Joe crossed after morning duty. Joe saw his own name there. Muscle Completion. Bret saw him. Their eyes met.

"Congratulations." The word sounded normal. Almost.

"Thank you." Joe kept walking. Bret said, "Both brothers climbing now." Joe stopped. Not because the words required it. Because the tone did. Bret curved his lips into a thin smile.

"One marries a Black. One works for them." Joe looked at him.

"Is there a question?"

"No." Bret glanced toward the board.

"Just interesting how well Green Hollow worked out for you." Joe considered replying. Nothing useful came to mind. So, he nodded.

"It did." Then left. That answer seemed to bother Bret more than an argument would have. Joe could feel his stare until he crossed the courtyard. Bret has lost several things over the past year. The ability to push Simon around cheaply. The certainty that his father's position settled every disagreement. The warehouse men willing to act for him without fear. And now even the younger brother he had treated as irrelevant carried an official Muscle Completion record at eighteen.

Joe understood resentment well enough to know that none of those losses required Bret to become wiser. Sometimes pressure improved people. Sometimes it merely showed where they would break. Joe did not know which kind Bret was yet. But he suspected the answer would arrive before Joe left Blackwood.
