Deepwinter returned to Blackwood by degrees. At first, frost only whitened the western training yard before sunrise. Then roof runoff began freezing again after sunset, merchants pulled more of their goods behind doors, and the outer streets emptied earlier beneath coal smoke and the smell of hot broth.

Beyond the western wall, the forest lost enough leaves that distant gray ridges appeared between bare trunks, while tracks from deer, boar and less familiar animals remained visible longer in the thin snow beside the managed roads. Joe had spent enough years in Blackwood that he no longer needed the calendar to tell him what season had arrived. His own body measured time more precisely. The fourth Muscle tempering was settling. The change was no longer merely something he sensed while cultivating.

His shoulders had widened slightly, the muscles across his back and legs felt firmer beneath the skin, and even relaxed movement carried a cleaner sense of connection from hips through torso to arms. Perfect Body prevented the growing strength from collecting awkwardly in whichever region had received the most training. His proportions remained lean, balanced and increasingly refined rather than becoming heavy or stiff. A medicine crate that once required both hands could now be shifted carelessly with one.

Hard guard drills left less muscular soreness the following morning. During sudden turns, his legs produced enough force that Joe occasionally had to shorten the movement halfway through rather than risk showing how quickly he could actually change position. Skin Great Completion had become background by comparison, but winter still reminded him of its value.

Cold wind irritated him without biting as deeply as it once had, ordinary training bruises disappeared quickly, and the scratches and biting insects from warmer forest patrols rarely penetrated deeply enough to become more than nuisances. That layer was finished. Muscle continued changing. Joe tested it once the fourth pass had fully settled. The rear warehouse was empty after evening inventory, so he inspected the freight frame, loaded it gradually and began well below his limit.

Five hundred kilograms rose without difficulty. Six hundred demanded enough force to feel useful. At six hundred fifty, his breathing deepened and the muscles along his legs, back and abdomen tightened together with satisfying uniformity. Joe lowered the frame. He waited, then repeated the lift. This time he noticed his breath. During the first attempt, he had held it almost automatically through the hardest portion. The extra pressure made his torso feel stable, but not necessarily efficient.

On the second attempt he controlled the breath more deliberately, letting tension remain without locking everything rigidly. The load moved more cleanly. Joe stored the observation. His Past Life Memory supplied comparisons to heavy lifting from Earth, but memory was not proof that two worlds obeyed identical rules. Every Hard Work Pays Off was more useful here.

A valid effort returned not only physical progress but the experience that effort could reasonably teach him, and repeated comparisons made subtle differences much harder to dismiss. He added another small load. Somewhere around six hundred seventy kilograms. Joe lifted. The frame rose slowly but steadily. His muscles still had reserve. He lowered it rather than chasing another number. The test had answered the question. Muscle IV had noticeably increased his strength while improving control and recovery.

Perfect Health kept the repeated strain from accumulating into old injuries, No Regression preserved legitimate gains once earned, and One Effort Equals a Hundred magnified the return from correct practice now that he had awakened it at sixteen. His talents no longer felt like separate miracles. They were beginning to reinforce one another. Joe suspected that interaction would become increasingly important as his cultivation grew more complicated. That was another reason not to die.

Simon turned the next useful test into a competition. The western yard was still pale with frost when he tied a strip of red cloth around a waist-high marker.

"Cole and I attack. Joe and Daren defend." Joe looked at the wooden sword in Simon's hand.

"You chose the best weapon."

"I'm captain."

"That explains access, not fairness."

"Winning explains fairness afterward." Cole laughed. Simon immediately pointed at him.

"You're with me." Cole's amusement disappeared. Daren rubbed his hands together.

"Can we begin before my fingers stop functioning?" Simon drew a circle around the marker with the end of his sword.

The first exchange lasted only seconds. Cole rushed Daren. Simon moved left. Joe closed the angle. Wood cracked once against wood, Simon withdrew, and everyone reset. The second exchange was faster. Joe redirected Simon's sword and nearly stepped too far afterward when Muscle IV answered more forcefully than expected.

He shortened the movement before it became obvious. Simon's eyes narrowed.

"Again." The third exchange began almost identically. Cole drove at Daren. Simon attacked Joe's left. Joe shifted. Then both attackers changed at once. Cole gave ground. Daren followed half a step. Simon reversed toward the marker. Daren's shoulder crossed Joe's direct path. Joe saw the entire opening before Simon had completed the turn. He could stop him. A single explosive step would do it.

It would also require either crashing through Daren or moving fast enough that the exercise would become a discussion about Joe rather than Simon's tactic. Joe chose neither. Simon tore the red cloth free.

"Got it." The exchange had lasted perhaps three breaths. Daren stared at Cole.

"You ran away." Cole smiled.

"Tactically." Simon pointed the cloth at Joe.

"You lost." Joe nodded.

"Good setup." Simon's satisfaction faded slightly.

"That is an irritating response."

"You won."

"You sound like you're reviewing paperwork." Daren laughed. Joe reset the cloth.

"Again." The next round ended differently. Cole tried the same withdrawal. Daren refused to follow. Simon entered hard through the center, Joe redirected the sword, shifted once and placed himself in front of the marker before Simon could recover. Fast. Finished. No extended exchange. Simon stared at him. Joe had restrained the movement carefully, but it was still near the upper edge of what his public progress should reasonably show.

"You've gotten faster."

"I'm training Muscle." That was publicly known. His guard record still listed Skin Completion as his last formal assessment, but nobody expected a practitioner to undergo a new official evaluation every time he began working the next layer. Joe ate like someone tempering Muscle, trained with Muscle-level conditioning, and had never tried to hide that he had entered the realm. What remained hidden was how far beyond ordinary progression he already was. Simon narrowed his eyes.

"How far?"

"Farther than last month."

"That answer should be illegal." Joe smiled.

After the others left, Joe moved to the smaller rehabilitation yard beside the medical wing. Static Foundation had become so familiar that he had nearly stopped treating it as cultivation. That was a mistake. Greater strength made small structural flaws more expensive. Under a light load, a slight shift in the pelvis wasted effort. Under hundreds of kilograms, the same error redirected substantial force through the body. Joe stood. Feet natural. Knees relaxed. Spine aligned. Shoulders loose. Breathing unobstructed.

Then he stopped thinking about the stance itself. The remaining weakness had become difficult to define. His posture was already excellent. Whenever something disturbed it, he corrected almost immediately. Every Hard Work Pays Off gradually made him realize that almost immediately was still the problem. A sound behind him shifted pressure slightly toward one heel. He released it. Cold air touched his neck and created a tiny unnecessary tension. Released.

Someone passed close outside the yard, and one shoulder prepared for movement that never became necessary. Released. Joe continued. At first he was correcting individual reactions. Then the insight changed. Why was he correcting them at all? Completion had taught him to return quickly to correct structure. Perfection should mean correct structure was the place his body naturally remained unless genuine movement required otherwise. Not something held. Something default. Joe exhaled slowly. His body quieted.

Heart beating. Lungs moving. Blood Energy circulating. Muscles making the microscopic adjustments required to stand. Yet nothing unnecessary disturbed the whole. He stepped sideways. Stopped. Alignment returned before he consciously ordered it. Turn. Stop. Same. Crouch. Rise. Stillness returned without being rebuilt. Joe deliberately distracted himself, listening to voices beyond the wall while recalling a medicine formula and changing his breathing. The structure remained. Only then did he check the panel.

Static Foundation — Lv5 Perfection Below it, another line remained unfinished. Dynamic Foundation — Lv4 Joe studied that one longer. Stillness had reached its end. Motion had not. Good. He knew where to work next.

Simon failed his Skin Completion assessment two days later. Joe knew before Simon said anything because his brother entered their room and began removing his boots as though they had personally betrayed him.

"Halven failed you?" Simon stopped.

"How did you know?"

"You're fighting leather." Simon dropped one boot.

"Lower back circulation becomes uneven when I'm tired."

"So fix it." Simon stared.

"That is your comfort?"

"It is the problem."

"I am aware of the problem."

"Then the assessment was useful." Simon looked offended enough that Joe almost laughed. The real irritation ran deeper. Simon was three years older, yet Joe had already moved publicly into Muscle while Simon remained at the end of Skin. For most of their childhood, age had placed Simon ahead automatically. Blackwood had changed that. Joe understood the pressure without pretending the comparison was fair. Simon did not possess Joe's talents. He also did not know they existed.

"You're close," Joe said. Simon groaned.

"That is what people tell someone who hasn't finished."

"It can also be true." Simon stared at him, then finally laughed despite himself. Eleven days later, he passed. He showed Joe the notice before dinner and spent nearly a minute pretending not to be pleased.

"Skin Completion," Joe read.

"Yes."

"Congratulations." Simon waited. Joe looked up.

"What?"

"That sounded administrative." Joe smiled.

"I'm happy for you."

"Better." By then Deepwinter was nearing its end, and Joe's seventeenth birthday had quietly passed several days earlier. Seventeen. Simon was twenty.

The first real disturbance arrived through the assignment board. Not a forest mission. A complaint. Simon's team had spent much of the recent winter on warehouse lanes, inner-road patrols and market rotations. The assignments were legitimate; Simon had become reliable, and his connection to Mira had also made certain people more willing to trust his team around Black-family shipments and medicine routes. No one had officially called it favoritism. That did not mean nobody noticed. Bret Vane noticed.

He stood in front of the board one morning, reading the new routes while Simon finished breakfast nearby. Bret looked at the sheet. Then at Simon.

"Another warehouse rotation." Simon shrugged.

"Apparently."

"My team has western timber road again."

"Talk to assignments." Bret smiled without humor.

"Must be useful having friends." Simon's expression changed. Joe, seated two places away, looked up. Bret continued, "Black family shipments. Safe streets. Warm warehouses. You rescue one merchant girl and suddenly the forest forgets your name." Simon stood. Too quickly. Joe put his spoon down. The room had become quieter around them. Simon said, "If you think the assignment is wrong, complain to the officer who made it." Bret's smile thinned.

"My father reviews western rotations." There it was. Not yet a threat. A fact deliberately placed where a threat could grow later. Joe looked at Bret carefully. Simon did too. Then Simon smiled.

"Good. Complain to him." Bret stared at him for several seconds before walking away. Simon sat. Cole whispered, "That was stupid." Simon reached for his bowl.

"He started it."

"That does not make it less stupid." Joe said nothing. He was already thinking about Garrick Vane. Senior officer. Bone practitioner. A man with enough influence over readiness and western assignments to turn resentment into something perfectly legitimate on paper. Nothing had happened yet. Perhaps nothing would. Joe doubted that. Across the mess hall, Bret joined another table and began speaking quietly to two guards. Simon resumed eating as though the conversation had ended. Joe did the same.

Publicly, that was the rational response. Privately, he remembered every word. Blackwood had been comfortable for a while. Comfort, Joe knew, was often most visible just before someone decided you had received too much of it.
