Starlight arrived beneath clear autumn skies. For three evenings, Blackwood looked wealthier than it actually was. Paper lanterns stretched between buildings, their light reflecting from shop windows and polished signboards. Merchants pushed tables into the streets, children carried cheap wooden stars painted silver, and the smell of roasted meat, sweet cakes and hot wine settled over the market districts. Even the guard compound relaxed.

Off-duty men changed out of uniform earlier than usual, patrols doubled around the busiest streets, and someone had decorated the western gate with enough lanterns that Daren complained the forest beasts would assume they were being invited inside. Joe liked Starlight. He liked it considerably more now that spending a few silver did not require planning around next month's medicine. Simon considered that an excuse to interfere with Joe's finances.

"You should buy something."

"I buy things regularly."

"Medicine doesn't count."

"Food?"

"Also doesn't count." Joe glanced at Simon's new coat.

"This counts?" Simon adjusted the collar.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it isn't necessary." Joe nodded toward the dark-green trim.

"Mira?" Simon looked offended.

"No." Joe waited. Simon sighed.

"She said green looked good." Joe continued toward Edwin's residence.

Edwin was not celebrating. Joe found him in the rear office with two ledgers open, another closed beneath his elbow and a Black-family notice lying beside his tea. The tea had gone cold. Joe sat across from him.

"Renford?" Edwin looked up.

"You are becoming unpleasantly predictable."

"The letter helped."

"That was supposed to remain folded."

"It failed." Edwin pushed one ledger aside.

"The northern herb allocation has been divided." Joe knew the route. Mountain suppliers farther north sent common medicinal bark, several strengthening herbs and occasional rare materials through the Black family's buyers. Edwin's branch had managed most of those relationships for years.

"Renford received part?"

"Half." Joe thought about the implications before asking, "What reason did the elders give?" Edwin's expression improved slightly.

"At least you asked that instead of assuming they became idiots."

"They usually aren't."

"That is the problem." Edwin leaned back.

"Renford is now a true Martial Artist. His branch is expected to take greater responsibility for several northern matters, including protection and negotiations. The elders decided consolidating some purchasing under the same branch would make coordination easier."

"Would it?"

"Potentially." Edwin sounded deeply offended by this fact. Joe almost laughed. The Black family did not function like the guard. Garrick could issue an order because his rank gave him authority over guards beneath him. The Black family was messier. Branches. Elders. Marriage ties. Inherited methods. Medicine businesses. Supplier relationships. Personal favors. Martial strength. No single measure decided everything.

For years Edwin had made himself important through commerce and medicine despite lacking the martial standing of stronger relatives. Renford becoming a true Martial Artist had changed the weight of every argument around him.

"Money?" Joe asked.

"I lose some."

"Influence?" Edwin's mouth tightened.

"More." Controlling a supply route meant suppliers visited you. Information reached you first. This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience. People need signatures from your office. You had opportunities to give favors and reasons to request them later. Renford was not merely taking profit. He was taking pieces of the network Edwin had spent years building. Edwin tapped the notice.

"The irritating part is that I cannot even call it foolish."

"Would you prefer foolish enemies?"

"Greatly." Joe laughed. Edwin looked toward the courtyard.

"Sometimes I envy people who can resolve twenty years of family politics by becoming stronger." The sentence stayed with Joe longer than Edwin probably intended.

Mira met Simon near the southern market after sunset. Joe had planned to disappear when she arrived. Simon stopped him.

"Stay for a few minutes."

"Why?"

"I may need your opinion." That became suspicious approximately thirty seconds later when Simon stopped at a jewelry stall. Mira noticed immediately. Joe noticed Mira noticing. Simon somehow noticed neither. The elderly woman running the stall watched the three of them with the patient expression of someone who had seen this exact problem many times.

"Bracelet?" she asked. Simon said, "We're only looking." Mira said nothing. Joe took one step backward. Simon caught his sleeve.

"Where are you going?"

"You no longer need me."

"I haven't asked anything yet."

"You need courage, not advice." Mira covered her mouth. Simon released Joe's sleeve.

"Both of you are terrible." He eventually chose a narrow silver bracelet with a dark-green stone. Simple. Well made. Far more expensive than Simon intended when he first stopped. Mira objected. Simon paid before she could object again. Joe respected the merchant for moving faster than both of them.

They entered the next market street together. That was where Joe saw Bret. He stood outside a wine stall with the two southern warehouse men Joe had noticed several times before. One wore the knotted red cord associated with some of the dockside crews. They had been drinking. Not heavily enough to stumble. Enough to become louder. Bret saw Simon first. Then Mira. His expression changed. Simon stiffened.

"Keep walking," Joe said quietly. Simon did. Joe was mildly impressed. They made it nearly twenty paces.

"Simon." His brother stopped. Less impressive. Still better than months ago. Bret approached with the two men behind him. His eyes dropped to the bracelet on Mira's wrist.

"Festival gifts?" Simon said nothing. Bret smiled.

"Warehouse routes must pay better than I remember." Joe looked around. Crowded street. Merchants watching. Families passing. Two guards stationed near the intersection. Bret had chosen the place deliberately. Simon seemed to notice as well. His shoulders relaxed slightly. Progress. Bret continued, "Although I suppose those comfortable assignments are getting harder to keep." Simon frowned.

"What does that mean?" Bret looked toward Mira.

"Families change." Joe's attention sharpened. That was enough. Bret did not need the details. He knew Edwin's position had weakened. Which meant the information had reached Garrick's circle. Perhaps through another officer with Black-family contacts. Perhaps through ordinary gossip. The source could be discovered later. The important point was that Garrick's recent behavior had not happened blindly. One of Bret's companions laughed.

"Maybe the village captain finally gets to patrol like everybody else." Simon stepped forward. Only half a step. Joe touched his forearm. Not enough to restrain him. Only enough to remind him where they were. Simon stopped. Bret noticed.

"Your brother has to hold you back?" Joe looked at him.

"No. I'm reminding him why you chose a crowded street." Bret's smile weakened. The answer was more direct than Joe usually gave. Mira looked at him too. Joe kept his expression calm. The nearby patrol had begun moving closer. Bret saw them.

"Enjoy Starlight." His attention moved to Mira.

"Things don't stay the same forever." Then he left. Simon watched him disappear into the crowd.

"He wanted me to hit him."

"Yes."

"So, he could file something."

"Probably." Simon exhaled.

"He knows about Edwin."

"Enough." Mira was quiet beside them. Simon looked toward her.

"You knew?"

"My father said things were difficult inside the family." Joe noticed the careful wording. Edwin had told her enough to prepare her without dragging her into branch politics. Simon squeezed her hand. Mira leaned slightly closer to him. Joe looked toward the festival stalls instead. Some conversations did not need a third person.

On the walk home, Joe reconsidered the encounter. Bret believed Simon was becoming easier to pressure because Edwin's standing had weakened. That calculation made sense. Simon was early Muscle. Edwin still relevant, but less than before. Mira belonged to the Black family, yet she was not an elder or a true Martial Artist. Garrick was a senior officer and a Late Bone practitioner. From the outside, the balance looked obvious. The flaw was Joe. They still considered him Simon's talented younger brother.

A medical auxiliary. A young guard publicly working through Muscle. Someone useful enough to notice but not important enough to alter the calculation. That assumption was increasingly obsolete. Joe had completed one full Bone tempering after bringing both Skin and Muscle through nine passes. Garrick's Late Bone cultivation might include unusually good Foundations and perhaps some additional refinement from years spent stalled. It did not bridge that gap. If they fought seriously now, Joe expected to win.

He did not know exactly how easily. Garrick possessed years of combat experience Joe lacked. But Joe no longer classified him as someone whose strength prevented resistance. The uniform did. The office. Witnesses. Records. Other officers. The magistrate's authority behind the guard. Those were the reasons Joe remained careful. That distinction changed something subtle in him. Previously, political caution and martial caution had been almost the same thing. Powerful people tended to be personally stronger as well.

Now the two were separating. Garrick's authority exceeded his strength. Joe wondered how often that happened farther up the world.

Bone II finished nine days after Starlight. The final circulation settled late at night. Joe remained seated for several minutes afterward, examining the entire skeletal structure through sensation and controlled movement. Bone II had not simply made the frame harder. Load spread differently. The joints accepted muscular force more evenly. Transitions through hips, spine and shoulders felt cleaner. More of Muscle Great Completion had become available. Joe waited three days before returning to the warehouse.

One thousand kilograms rose smoothly. Eleven hundred followed. He added more. Eleven-fifty. Then twelve hundred. The frame rose. Joe held it for several breaths. His muscles worked. His skeleton remained stable. He lowered the weight carefully. Twelve hundred kilograms. Controlled. And still not his absolute limit. Joe did not add more. Bone III could have the rest.

He began experimenting with something else instead. On his walk through the southern district, Joe shortened his stride. His shoulders rounded slightly. His chin lowered. He changed the rhythm of his breathing and let one foot turn outward more than usual. The posture looked poor. It was not. Static Foundation Perfection allowed him to understand exactly how far an apparently awkward position could deviate without becoming structurally harmful.

Dynamic Foundation allowed the false gait to continue through movement without disturbing his actual balance. The result felt strange. That was useful. A warehouse clerk approached from the opposite direction. Joe knew him. The man knew Joe. They passed within several steps. The clerk did not react. Only after Joe moved beyond him did he hear:"Joe?" Joe turned. The clerk looked confused.

"Evening."

"What happened to your leg?"

"Nothing." The confusion deepened. Joe smiled and continued walking normally. Interesting. People did not recognize faces alone. They recognized combinations. Posture. Stride. Breathing. Clothing. Where a person looked. How quickly they moved around others. Past Life Memory made the patterns easy to retain once noticed. Perfect Body made altering his own easier than it should have been. Joe practiced again the following night. And the next.

He passed Bret's tavern on the fourth evening. Different coat. Shoulders lowered. A slightly uneven gait. Breathing slow enough to make him look tired rather than trained. Bret stood outside with the red-cord men. Joe walked within twenty paces. Nobody looked twice. That produced a satisfaction no strength test had given him. Not because disguise was more valuable than strength. Because it solved a different problem. Joe continued toward home.

Edwin had spent decades accumulating enough influence to sit comfortably at the Black family's political table. Renford became a true Martial Artist, and the table tilted. Garrick possessed enough institutional weight to worsen Simon's assignments without needing to defeat Simon personally. Bret believed those relationships made him difficult to touch. For now, he was correct. Joe still benefited from the guard. He still benefited from Edwin.

He still lived inside Blackwood's rules and had no reason to destroy arrangements that mostly served him well. But those rules were no longer laws of nature. That difference was becoming increasingly obvious. Joe had spent most of his life learning how to sit at other people's tables without attracting dangerous attention. Perhaps that would always be useful. But strength changed what happened when negotiation failed.

And one day, if someone insisted the table itself gave them power Joe was required to respect, he might discover that overturning it was simpler than arguing over the seating.
