The cathedral doors groaned open. A wave of freezing air swept through Noctis, extinguishing every torch in the surrounding streets. Darkness spilled from the entrance like a living tide, creeping across the stone roads before stopping just short of Rayan's feet. The entire city fell silent. Even the possessed citizens stopped moving. They turned toward the cathedral and slowly knelt. Not in fear. In worship. The Guardian's face grew pale.
"The Shadow Sanctuary..."
"It shouldn't exist." Rayan looked at him.
"I thought there were only seven sanctuaries."
"There are." The old spirit swallowed.
"This..."
"... was never one of them." Thousands of years earlier... When the Seven Dharma Sanctuaries were built, another temple had secretly been constructed beneath the western continent. Not by the Dharma Heirs. But by Kael. A sanctuary created to imitate the Dharma Astra. A sanctuary fueled not by virtues... But by humanity's darkest emotions. Fear. Hatred. Greed. Despair. Unlike the Seven Sanctuaries, it had never been blessed. It had been cursed.
"So Kael built his own legacy." The Guardian nodded.
"He failed to become a Dharma Heir."
"So he created his own path." Cassian looked toward the cathedral.
"And somehow..."
"It's working."
"No." The Guardian corrected him.
"It's corrupting." The enormous cathedral stood at the center of Noctis like a mountain carved from black marble. Its stained-glass windows depicted seven broken crowns beneath a black sun. Every statue surrounding the entrance had lost its face. If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. As if someone had deliberately erased every trace of identity. Rayan slowly climbed the stone steps. The moment his foot touched the first stair...
The silver compass around his neck spun wildly. Its needle pointed directly toward the cathedral. Then... It shattered. The broken pieces fell into his palm. His mother's final gift... Destroyed. Rayan stared silently at the fragments. For a brief moment... The anger he had buried deep within himself surfaced. Kael. Siena gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Don't let him decide how you feel." Rayan closed his eyes. A deep breath. Another. When he opened them again... The anger was gone. Only determination remained.
"He wants me to lose control." The Guardian smiled.
"And you didn't." The massive cathedral doors slowly opened on their own. A long hallway stretched into darkness. Hundreds of candles burned with black flames. Their light cast no shadows. At the end of the hall... Someone was playing a piano. A slow. Melancholic melody echoed through the cathedral. The sound was strangely beautiful. Almost heartbreaking. Cassian whispered,"I've officially decided..."
"I hate this place." The group cautiously walked deeper inside. Ancient murals covered the walls. Unlike the heroic paintings inside the Dharma Sanctuaries... These depicted betrayal. Wars. Kings murdering their own people. Brothers turning against brothers. Heroes abandoning cities. Every failure in humanity's history. The Guardian stopped before one mural. His expression froze.
"No..." Rayan followed his gaze. The painting showed Arkan. The First Dharma Heir. Standing over countless bodies. His sword dripping with blood. Rayan immediately frowned.
"That's impossible."
"It is." The Guardian's voice trembled.
"Arkan never did this."
"So why is it here?" A quiet voice answered from deeper within the cathedral.
"Because history belongs..."
"... to whoever survives." The piano stopped. Kael stood from the instrument. He wore the same black coat. The same calm expression. He slowly applauded.
"You came." Rayan drew Shadowbreaker.
"I'm ending this." Kael smiled.
"No."
"You've only just arrived." He gestured toward the murals surrounding them.
"What do you see?"
"Lies."
"Interesting." Kael walked toward one painting after another.
"You see lies."
"I see memories." He stopped before the image of Arkan.
"The world worships heroes."
"It forgets their failures." Rayan's voice remained steady.
"Every hero has failures."
"Exactly." Kael turned.
"So why hide them?" For a long moment... Neither moved. Then Kael asked quietly,"Tell me, Rayan."
"If saving your kingdom required sacrificing another..."
"... would you do it?" The question echoed through the cathedral. No one answered. Kael continued.
"If saving one million lives required killing one innocent child..."
"... what would your precious Dharma choose?" Rayan remained silent. Not because he didn't have an answer. Because there wasn't an easy one. Kael smiled knowingly.
"That's the difference between us."
"You still believe every story has a perfect ending."
"I know better." Suddenly... The floor cracked. Black chains burst from beneath the cathedral. They wrapped around the murals. The statues. The pillars. The entire building trembled. Deep below... Something roared. Not a monster. Not an Archon. Something far older. Kael looked downward with satisfaction.
"The seal is finally weakening." The Guardian's eyes widened.
"What seal?" Kael looked back toward them.
"The prison." Rayan's heart skipped a beat.
"Origin." Kael slowly nodded.
"The being you call Origin..."
"... isn't the enemy." Silence. Every word struck harder than a blade. The Guardian immediately shouted.
"Don't listen to him!" Kael ignored him.
"Ask yourself one question."
"If Origin created monsters..."
"Then..."
"Who created Heaven?" The cathedral shook violently. Before anyone could react— A blinding golden spear tore through the cathedral roof. BOOOOM! Black stone exploded in every direction. A figure descended from the heavens surrounded by six radiant wings. Golden armor. A divine spear. Eyes burning like twin suns. The newcomer pointed his weapon directly at Kael. His voice thundered through the cathedral.
"By the decree of Queen Seraphina..."
"I, Archon Michael, sentence you to eternal judgment." Kael smiled. Not with fear. With excitement. He slowly drew his black sword.
"Finally..."
"A worthy audience." The cathedral erupted with Astra and celestial power as two ancient enemies prepared to clash. And Rayan realized... He had just been caught in a war that had begun long before humanity was ever born. To Be Continue....
