The camp awakened before dawn. No one had slept peacefully. The image of the man inside the shattered mirror lingered in everyone's mind like an unhealed wound. The Guardian stood alone at the edge of a cliff overlooking the Ironwood Mountains. His weathered face was unusually pale, and his hands rested behind his back as the morning wind tugged at his robes. Rayan approached quietly.
"You know him." The old spirit didn't answer immediately. Instead, he watched the sunrise.
"The world remembers heroes," he said at last.
"It remembers kings who saved nations, saints who slew monsters, and legends who changed history." He closed his eyes.
"But history rarely remembers those who betrayed it." Rayan's voice remained calm.
"His name is Kael." The Guardian slowly nodded.
"Kael Ardent."
"The greatest disciple the Dharma Order ever produced." Rayan frowned.
"He wasn't a Dharma Heir?"
"No."
"He desperately wanted to become one." Thousands of years ago... The Guardian's voice carried Rayan into another memory. A magnificent city stood beneath a sky filled with floating islands. Young warriors trained within a vast temple carved from white stone. Among them stood a teenager with bright golden eyes. Kael. Even as a boy, his talent surpassed everyone around him. His swordsmanship. His Astra control. His intelligence. Everything was extraordinary.
The instructors believed he would become humanity's greatest protector. Then Arkan arrived. The First Dharma Heir. The man chosen by the Dharma Astra itself. The memory shifted. Young Kael stood outside the temple, watching Arkan leave with the sacred sword. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. His fists trembled.
"He was stronger than me..." Kael whispered.
"He trained less."
"He sacrificed less."
"So why him?" No one answered. The Dharma Astra had chosen. And Kael could never accept it. The memory dissolved. The Guardian sighed heavily.
"He spent decades searching for another way."
"He believed destiny could be stolen." Rayan remained silent.
"Eventually..." The Guardian looked toward the north.
"He found Origin." A cold breeze swept across the mountain.
"Origin promised him exactly what he wanted."
"The power to rewrite fate." Cassian kicked a small stone off the cliff.
"So..."
"He's jealous." The Guardian shook his head.
"It began as jealousy."
"But after thousands of years..."
"It became obsession." Siena looked toward Rayan.
"He doesn't want to become the Dharma Heir anymore." The Guardian nodded grimly.
"He wants to erase every Dharma Heir that ever existed." A horn suddenly echoed through the valley. One of Ayanor's scouts raced toward the camp atop a white wyvern. He landed so hard that snow erupted beneath the creature's claws.
"Report!" King Dasrath commanded. The scout saluted.
"The western frontier has fallen." Every leader looked up.
"What attacked?" The scout swallowed.
"It wasn't an army."
"It was one man." He unrolled a bloodstained map. Every fortress between the frontier and the western sea had been marked with the same symbol. A black sun. Cassian stared.
"He destroyed all of those?"
"In one night." The scout nodded.
"No survivors reported seeing a battle."
"Only..." He hesitated.
"A man walking through the flames." Meanwhile... Far to the west... The ruins of the last fortress still burned. Bodies of monsters and soldiers alike covered the battlefield. No walls remained standing. No towers. No gates. Only silence. A lone figure walked through the ashes. Kael. His black cloak drifted behind him as crimson markings slowly spread across his right arm. He stopped before an ancient stone altar. The symbol engraved upon it matched the map. A black sun. He gently brushed away centuries of dust.
"You've slept long enough." Dark energy seeped into the altar. The earth trembled. Ancient chains buried beneath the continent began to crack. One... Then another. A deep voice echoed from beneath the earth.
"Who calls?" Kael smiled.
"The one who refuses fate." Back at the camp... Rayan's crystal suddenly floated into the air. Unlike before, it did not project a memory. Instead... Six tiny lights appeared around it. One shone brilliantly. Valen. One flickered weakly. Arkan. One had gone completely dark. The Sanctuary of Wisdom. Three remained dormant. The final light... Was black. Not golden. Black. The Guardian stared at it in horror.
"No..." Rayan looked at him.
"What does it mean?" The old spirit's voice trembled.
"The Dharma Astra was created with seven virtues." He pointed toward the black light.
"But every virtue has an opposite."
"Courage..."
"... has fear."
"Wisdom..."
"... has deception."
"Justice..."
"... has vengeance." The realization struck everyone at once. Cassian's grin disappeared.
"You're saying..." The Guardian slowly nodded.
"Kael isn't creating his own power."
"He's corrupting ours." Silence filled the valley. If the Dharma Astra represented humanity's greatest hope... Then Kael was becoming its shadow. That night... Rayan stood alone beside a quiet mountain lake. The water reflected thousands of stars. He removed the old silver compass his father had given him. For the first time in years... The needle wasn't pointing north. It pointed west. Toward Kael. Toward the burning frontier. Toward the Black Sun. As Rayan stared at the compass, a voice echoed behind him.
"You've finally noticed." He spun around. No one stood there. Only a single black feather drifted slowly onto the surface of the lake. The reflection changed. Instead of his own face... Kael looked back at him. Smiling.
"Find me, Rayan."
"I've been waiting for someone worthy enough to inherit my hatred." The lake exploded. Water erupted toward the sky. When it settled... The reflection was gone. Only the black feather remained, floating silently upon the surface. Rayan picked it up. It dissolved into ash in his hand. Far beyond the mountains... A pillar of black light pierced the heavens. The race for the remaining Dharma Sanctuaries had begun. But now... It wasn't just a race against Heaven.
It was a race against the man who wanted to rewrite destiny itself. To Be Continue....
