Pokémon: The Ashes Beneath Saffron · RineFrostfang · 71 chương · ~29 phút đọc · Tạo 08/08/2026
The sweetness in the smoke made Rine think of bedtime. Not safety. Not blankets. The Rocket orphanage had pumped a similar scent through the dormitory vents before unannounced searches. Children who woke slowly lost food privileges. Children who woke too quickly were accused of stealing stimulants. His body remembered before Identify finished.
"Sleep compound!" he shouted.
"Filter masks and floor level. Do not use open flame." The last warning reached Blaine as Magmar raised both arms. Fire disappeared from the Pokémon's fists, but heat still rolled outward in a controlled pressure that drove the first bank of smoke away from the central corridor. Identify separated what remained.
Airborne hazard mixture Components: Sleep Powder spores / synthetic neurotoxin / volcanic ash Carrier temperature: rising Estimated incapacitation without protection: 47–90 seconds Pell had built the purge to defeat ordinary responses. Heat kept the spores dry and mobile. Ventilation distributed the poison. A panicked Fire-type would ignite the suspended powder and turn the laboratory into a bomb. Mara kicked open the emergency cabinet and threw respirators down the hall.
Lyra caught three with telekinesis and sent them toward technicians emerging from dark offices. Kadabra stood in the intersection, both spoons raised, while a pale psychic plane gathered drifting particles against itself like dust against glass. It slowed the cloud. It did not stop the heat.
"Orre!" Rine called.
"Isolation room." Doctor Orre's voice came through the darkness, followed by Chansey's frightened cry. Ditto's medical basin depended on wall power for temperature control. Its backup indicator had already changed from green to yellow. Castform floated above Orre's shoulder, trembling as its climate collar sounded an alarm.
"Rain Dance," Orre said. Castform closed its eyes. Moisture gathered first on the ceiling, then in the air itself. A cold drop struck Rine's cheek. Another landed on Veyra's back. Within seconds, rain fell inside the laboratory in dense silver lines, dragging ash and Sleep Powder toward the drains. Castform's grey body softened into a blue, raindrop-shaped form as Forecast responded to the weather. The temperature stopped climbing. Then a harsh metallic hum rose through the floor.
Castform snapped back to its ordinary shape. Veyra staggered. The golden rhythm beneath her ribs broke into scattered pulses. Ability suppression detected Elemental Dynamo: inactive External source: Neutralizing Gas Purple vapor pushed through the open lower passage. Weezing came with it. The Poison-type floated into the dark laboratory wearing a black filtration harness around both heads.
Its hide bore old chemical scars, and one skull-and-crossbones marking had been covered by the serial crest of a private research firm. Behind it glided a Magneton, three eyes shining red. Electromagnetic interference pulsed from its magnets, smothering the emergency circuits and flooding every unshielded communicator with static.
Weezing — Male — Level 32 Ability: Neutralizing Gas Condition: chemically conditioned / remote-command harness active Magneton — Level 30 Ability: Sturdy — suppressed Condition: electromagnetic relay active / control module implanted Three humans followed in sealed cleanup suits. Dr. Soren Pell walked between them. She had aged since Rine last saw her beneath Saffron. Silver threaded her severe black hair, and a burn had drawn the corner of her mouth into a permanent downward line.
The years had not altered the way she looked at Pokémon. Her gaze passed over Veyra's faltering light, measured Castform's failed change, and settled on Morrow with clinical irritation.
"The Gastly survived," she said. Morrow's gas contracted around his core. Rine laid a Dark veil over it before Pell could finish recognizing the shape. The technique was no longer the uncontrolled absence that had swallowed Lyra's early psychic probes. He narrowed it to Morrow's center, leaving the Ghost's eyes and outer vapor visible. Hidden did not mean calm. Through their aura bond, Rine felt the memory of a tuning fork striking air.
"You left him to fragment," Rine said. Pell tilted her head.
"I left an unstable asset under Rocket lien. If it developed stability, that reflects well on the protocol." Morrow opened his mouth. Night Shade spilled across the corridor in a crooked black wave. Weezing moved in front of Pell. Ghostly force struck both bodies and shoved the Poison-type backward, but did not pass through. One of Weezing's heads grimaced. The other began laughing in a low, bubbling rhythm.
"Morrow," Rine said. The name carried through the room. Pell's eyes returned to him.
"Sentiment remains your most expensive defect."
"It has better survival results than your research."
"For the products you kept." She lifted two fingers. Magneton fired Flash Cannon. Kadabra's Reflect formed half a heartbeat before the silver beam reached them. Light struck light. The barrier bowed inward, showering the wet floor with sparks, and Lyra slid one step despite Kadabra taking the force.
"Left magnet!" she called. Veyra moved without electricity. She crossed beneath the second Flash Cannon, paws slipping once on the flooded tile before Grounded Step restored her balance. Her medical harness flashed amber. She ignored Magneton's central eye and bit into the left housing where the three bodies joined. Steel screamed between her teeth.
"Ember," Rine said.
"Narrow." Fire entered the puncture rather than spreading across the room. Magneton shrieked in three voices. Its Steel typing made the targeted heat effective, but the level difference remained enormous. One magnet rotated and struck Veyra across the shoulder. She hit the floor hard. Her harness changed from amber to red. Rine's next command died before becoming sound. Veyra rolled to her feet, saw his open hand, and withdrew. It was not victory.
It was a Level 15 Houndour hurting a Level 30 opponent and leaving before courage became organ damage. Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. Magmar replaced her. He caught Magneton between both hands without flame. Heat flooded the damaged metal until its magnets glowed dull red. The Electric-type released a Thunder Wave at contact range. Magmar's muscles locked, but Blaine had already thrown a Cheri preparation into his open mouth.
He bit down, shuddered, and held on.
"South hall clear!" Mara shouted.
"Medical wing moving now." The evacuation team rolled two patients toward the rear exit. One technician collapsed before reaching the psychic screen. Chansey abandoned the isolation room long enough to drag him by his coat, her small arms finding impossible strength when gentleness required it. Pell did not glance at the fallen man. She raised a palm-sized silver instrument. It produced no sound Rine could hear. Morrow came apart. His outer gas struck the ceiling.
The Dark veil around his core warped as a resonance traveled through it, not psychic power but a frequency tuned to the instability Pell had once measured. Pain crossed the aura bond with enough force to whiten Rine's vision. The Rocket knife was in his hand before he remembered drawing it. Pell stood twelve meters away behind poison, metal, and armed personnel. For one clean second, Rine wanted no arrest and no testimony. He wanted the blade beneath her jaw.
He imagined the resistance of skin with the same practical certainty he once used to estimate a Poké Ball's throwing arc. The ease of the thought frightened him less than it should have. That frightened him more.
"Disable the instrument," he said. Morrow could not gather his eyes. Rine tightened the aura link rather than the Dark energy around it. He did not push an order through. He gave Morrow something stable to find: Veyra's heartbeat against wet tile, Lyra's concentration behind Reflect, his own fear shaped without denial. Here. Not the cylinder. Not the fork. Here. Two red eyes opened amid the scattered gas. Pell activated the resonator again. Morrow looked at it.
Blue-white force snapped across the space between them. The instrument's indicator went black. Resonance Emitter's Spectral Pulse was Disabled Morrow collapsed into Rine's shadow, cohesion trembling but intact. One of the cleanup operatives threw a black capsule toward the evidence servers. Mara shot it in the air. The capsule burst anyway. Thermite scattered across the archive wall in white points. Rain hissed into steam without extinguishing it. Metal began running down the server faces.
Pell turned toward the lower passage.
"She's leaving," Lyra warned.
"No," Blaine said.
"She has what she came for." A silver vial lay locked against Pell's forearm, newly removed from a compartment concealed inside the passage frame. Pale material drifted within it, too little to resemble any living body and valuable enough to justify killing a laboratory full of people. Rine ran. Veyra followed despite the red light on her harness. Lyra shouted his name, but Pell had already crossed into the buried foundation. One cleanup operative retreated with her.
Weezing remained behind, Neutralizing Gas filling the intersection while Magmar struggled with Magneton. Rine crossed six meters. The isolation-room ceiling failed. The sound was not dramatic. One heated support gave a small metal crack. A lighting rail fell across the doorway, followed by a slab of ceiling material that struck Ditto's basin and overturned it. Purple fluid spilled across the wet floor. Doctor Orre went down beneath the rail. Chansey rushed toward him. A second fracture opened above them.
Pell was twenty meters away. Rine could still catch her. He knew where to drive the knife. Veyra could use Bite without electricity. Morrow's Mean Look might close the passage before Pell reached whatever exit waited beyond it. Ditto attempted to rise and could not hold its shape. Choice did not feel noble. It felt like tearing his own body in half.
"Veyra," Rine said. The Houndour had already turned toward Pell. Murderous gold filled her eyes. Rine pointed behind them.
"Ditto." Veyra looked from the retreating scientist to the purple body beneath the broken rail. Then she ran away from the prey. Rine followed. They reached the isolation doorway as the second ceiling section dropped. Kadabra caught it telekinetically, both spoons bending beneath strain. Lyra staggered, blood spilling from one nostril.
"Ten seconds," she gasped. Rine crawled beneath the suspended slab. He lifted the lighting rail far enough for Chansey to pull Orre free. Burned metal opened his palms. Veyra seized the basin's carry strap in her teeth and dragged it beside Ditto. The little purple body flowed toward the familiar scent of charcoal fur.
"No ball," Rine said.
"Basin upright." Chansey rolled Orre onto his back and checked his airway. The geneticist was unconscious, breathing, and bleeding heavily from his scalp. Rine set the basin on its base. Veyra nudged Ditto inside while Chansey poured replacement gel from the emergency pack.
"Clear!" Rine shouted. Kadabra released the ceiling. It struck the floor behind them hard enough to crack three windows. Neutralizing Gas thinned. Across the laboratory, one of Weezing's heads had gone slack. The Cinnabar Ranger's Sandslash pinned the filtration harness against the floor while she fitted an emergency return device to the Poison-type. The operative who commanded Weezing lay face down in restraints.
Magneton had stopped fighting after Magmar tore the control module from its rear body; without the signal driving it, all three eyes followed Pell's abandoned route in confusion. The cleanup team had treated its Pokémon as disposable doors. Rine knew the method. He hated recognizing it. Castform changed again as Forecast returned. Indoor rain strengthened, cold and relentless. Blaine and Magmar guided the thermite runoff into a stone drain while Mara ordered the last evacuation group toward the surface.
Pell's footsteps had vanished beneath the mansion. Rine carried one end of Ditto's basin. Veyra dragged the other until a Ranger took the strap from her and noticed the red medical alarm.
"She needs a stretcher." Veyra snarled.
"She needs a stretcher that does not look like a cage," Rine corrected. The Ranger found a flat rescue board. Veyra boarded under protest. Her scan showed a bruised shoulder, elevated cardiac strain, and no new lattice tearing. She had used one controlled Ember and no Electric attack. Following orders had protected her more effectively than winning could have. They reached the annex yard shortly before dawn. Rain Dance ended at the laboratory threshold.
Real Cinnabar air met them—sulfur, sea salt, and a wind cold enough to hurt smoke-damaged lungs. Emergency crews covered the volcanic road. A Blastoise team fed water into the annex system while Fearow carried sensor lines toward vents high on the slope. Doctor Orre regained consciousness inside an ambulance and immediately asked whether Ditto had been placed in a ball.
"No," Rine told him. Orre closed his eyes.
"Good." Ditto remained in the basin beside Veyra's rescue board. One pseudopod had wrapped around the torn carry strap. Morrow emerged only after the medical lamp arrived. His form was thin, his grin absent. He projected Pell walking into the tunnel, followed by an image of himself driving Night Shade through her chest. Rine sat on the black road beside him.
"I wanted that too." Morrow looked at him.
"I still do." There was no point making goodness out of a feeling he did not possess.
"But Ditto would be dead. Orre might be. Veyra would have followed us on a red harness." Morrow erased the image of Pell's death. He replaced it with the broken resonance emitter. Not forgiveness. A different victory. Mara found them as the eastern sky turned grey.
"Pell reached a sea vent beneath the western cliffs," she said.
"A submersible departed before the harbor barrier closed. We have no hull identification."
"She took the vial."
"Yes."
"I had a path to her." Mara's expression did not soften.
"Then your statement will say the suspect escaped when you joined a medical evacuation. Do not turn accuracy into confession for the pleasure of punishing yourself." Rine looked toward the annex doors.
"What survived?"
"Enough." Muk had saved more than anyone knew. When Poison specialists checked her after the purge, they found a second sealed ampoule buried harmlessly inside the sludge of her lower body. Sticky Hold had kept the smooth container from being pulled into a drain during the earlier flooding. She surrendered it only after the recovered Ditto was brought close enough to touch her hand again. The ampoule contained one of CR-17's two genetic fractions. Doctor Orre would offer no species identification from a field scan.
He confirmed only that the material showed extreme genomic flexibility and that its natural sequences had been cut, repeated, and paired with engineered tissue.
"Mew?" Rine asked. Blaine stood beside him outside the evidence tent, ash caught in his moustache.
"A name is not proof," the Gym Leader said.
"But you think it."
"I have thought it for seventeen years. That has never made it safe to say as fact." The second fraction had left with Pell. The first now belonged to a League court, watched by Cinnabar, Indigo, and three Pokémon-welfare representatives. Ditto was evidence too, but only in the legal sense. The laboratory petition identified the Pokémon as a protected survivor with no active ownership claim recognized until the Rocket records could be challenged.
At sunrise, an analyst recovered one usable route token from Magneton's control module. Its encryption belonged to the Viridian Gym Restoration Trust. Its destination field contained two words. GREENHOUSE NINE Giovanni's name did not appear. His architecture did. Blaine read the token, then removed his glasses and cleaned rain from them.
"You came here expecting the island in your memory," he said.
"I expected ruins and answers."
"You found people, ruins, and better questions. That is usually what an island is." Rine looked toward the town. Bakery shutters opened along the upper street. A harbor bell marked the beginning of a fishing shift. Near the memorial, the same audacious Pidgey waited on a warm pipe for Magmar to return. Life resumed around the crime scene without pretending the crime had vanished.
"When Veyra receives medical clearance," Blaine continued, "you may request a formal Gym evaluation." Rine turned.
"A battle?"
"An evaluation. You have one badge, an incomplete education, and a habit of treating exhaustion as strategy. I reserve the right to begin with a written examination."
"A quiz."
"If that word makes it more frightening." Morrow weakly projected the burning quiz board from Blaine's message. The Gym Leader examined it.
"Question one: What should a Trainer do the day after discovering a criminal genetics program beneath a volcano?" Rine considered pursuit routes, witness interviews, and the signal leading north. He also considered Veyra asleep on a rescue board, Ditto holding a torn strap, and Lyra sitting beneath an oxygen mask after pushing Kadabra beyond safe strain.
"Stay," he said.
"Until his partners can travel." Blaine's moustache lifted slightly.
"Acceptable." Lyra joined Rine when the medics released her. She did not ask whether he regretted letting Pell escape. Her fingers found the burns on his palm and closed carefully around the uninjured part of his hand. Below them, Cinnabar's black beaches gathered the morning light. Viridian waited beyond the sea. So did Giovanni, perhaps, and Greenhouse Nine, and whatever future someone had tried to build from a body that should never have become property. Rine would go after them. Not today.
Today, the living had kept him.
