Chương 50: A Better Kind of Loss

The Pewter Gym arena looked larger from the field. Stone pillars divided a broad rectangle of packed earth. Spectator seats rose behind protective glass. Medical teams waited beside both exits. League cameras hovered above the boundary, recording every command for Rine's provisional review. No hidden knives. No clock counting toward death. His hands shook anyway. Brock stood across from him in a brown Gym vest. Two Poké Balls rested on the platform beside him.
"This is a first-badge challenge," the announcer said.
"Two Pokémon each. Switching permitted. No battle items. Victory occurs when both opposing Pokémon are unable to continue or a Trainer surrenders. The referee may stop the match for safety." The crowd quieted.
"Challenger Rine Frostfang," Brock said.
"Are you ready?" Rine looked at Veyra. One bark. Morrow formed a circle inside his shadow.
"Ready." Brock selected his first ball.
"Geodude." White light struck the field. The Rock Pokémon landed between two pillars, fists pressing into the earth. Geodude — Male Level: 12 Type: Rock / Ground Ability: Rock Head Moves: Tackle; Defense Curl; Rock Throw; Rollout The roster matched. Rine refused to feel relief.
"Morrow." Gastly emerged high above the field. Violet gas condensed around his black core. His chosen name appeared briefly in the scoreboard. The referee raised one flag.
"Begin!"
"Defense Curl," Brock said.
"Night Shade." Geodude tucked inward. Rock energy reinforced his body. Morrow shaped spectral jaws and sent them across the field.
"Roll left," Brock said. Geodude moved without using Rollout, arms pushing his round body aside. Night Shade clipped one shoulder instead of striking center. Rine adjusted.
"Keep the core. Sweep." The jaws stretched.
"Rock Throw." Geodude tore a stone from the field and threw. Morrow dodged. His Night Shade distorted but held. The second stone came before the first landed. Morrow rose. Geodude aimed above him. The rock struck. Violet gas burst outward. Rine's body screamed to attack before Morrow recovered.
"Status." Morrow condensed. One complete circle. Able. Dark energy gathered from the impact.
"Payback." The pulse crossed faster than Night Shade. It struck Geodude's reinforced body and drove him backward. Not enough.
"Defense Curl," Brock repeated. Geodude tightened further. Rine understood. Brock was building Rollout.
"Confuse Ray." Morrow's eyes flashed. A wavering light entered Geodude's vision.
"Close your eyes," Brock said. Too late. Confusion disrupted direction, not loyalty. Geodude began Rollout, accelerating across the field while fighting false signals.
"Above the west pillar." Morrow moved. Geodude curved. Wrong direction. He struck a pillar and rebounded faster. The collision hurt, but Rock Head prevented recoil from becoming serious. Rollout gained momentum.
"Night Shade beneath him." Morrow sent the jaws along the ground. They struck Geodude's lower edge during the next pass. The rolling Pokémon launched upward.
"Release Levitate." Morrow dropped. Geodude passed above him and hit the boundary wall. The referee leaned forward. Geodude pushed away from the stone. Still conscious. Confusion ended. Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
"Rock Throw, spread," Brock said. Geodude broke one large stone into three. Morrow avoided the first. The second passed through outer gas. The third hit his core. His cohesion fell to sixty-nine percent.
"One exchange," Rine said. Morrow formed a broken circle. He remembered the qualifier. Not fully safe. Willing. Rine needed more than willingness. The medical indicator remained green.
"Hypnosis." Morrow's eyes pulsed. Geodude swayed. Hypnosis missed more often than it landed. This time, exhaustion and Confuse Ray's residue lowered resistance. Geodude fell asleep.
"Night Shade. Controlled." The spectral jaws closed around him. The referee's flag rose.
"Geodude is unable to continue!" The crowd applauded. Rine had won the first exchange. No relief came. Brock recalled Geodude, checked the ball's medical light, and selected the second.
"Onix." The arena shook. Stone segments emerged in a rising chain until Onix towered above the pillars. Onix — Male Level: 14 Type: Rock / Ground Ability: Rock Head Moves: Tackle; Bind; Screech; Rock Tomb No Ground attack listed. Identify showed known moves, not every technique the Pokémon could improvise. Rine did not trust the absence.
"Switch," he said. Morrow crossed the recall line. Veyra entered moving. Onix lowered his head. Veyra looked very small.
"Howl." Her voice strengthened muscle and announced pack position.
"Rock Tomb," Brock said. Onix struck the field with his tail. Four stones rose and fell toward Veyra.
"Read the shadows." She moved between the first two. The third broke beside her. The fourth clipped her medical harness. The indicator remained green.
"Smog." Black cloud spread around Onix's lower segments.
"Screech." The sound tore through it. Veyra flinched. Defensive coordination fell as vibration disrupted her muscles. Onix did not need sight. His body sensed the field.
"Bind." Stone curved through the Smog.
"Roar at the head!" Veyra's directed cry struck Onix above the cloud. His alignment shifted. The coils closed off center. She found the gap.
"Bite, third joint!" Veyra attacked where two segments met. Her teeth caught. Onix roared and lifted her from the ground.
"Release!" Veyra let go before being thrown. She landed, rolled, and rose.
"Rock Tomb," Brock said. This time, the stones narrowed her movement rather than aiming to strike. One route remained. Rine saw it. Brock had created it.
"Stay." Veyra stopped before entering the corridor. Onix's tail swept through where she would have run.
"Bite the tail." She caught the passing segment. Howl-enhanced force cracked the outer stone layer. The crowd reacted. Onix pulled away. Veyra's jaw bled where rock cut her gum. Medical indicator amber. Not danger yet.
"Status." One bark. Ready. Brock watched her current.
"Bind." Onix attacked directly. Rine initiated a switch. Five-second interval. Veyra ran for the line. Onix's body closed behind her. She crossed. Morrow entered high.
"Rock Tomb," Brock said before he fully formed. The stones did not target Morrow. They struck the pillars. Broken rock filled the air with elemental fragments capable of touching Ghost gas. Morrow twisted through two. The third struck. His cohesion fell below fifty. The medical indicator turned amber.
"Night Shade," Rine said. Morrow began. Onix used Tackle. Normal-type energy passed through. The physical mass did not matter without compatible elemental contact. Morrow completed Night Shade against Onix's face. The Rock Snake recoiled.
"Screech." Morrow's gas shuddered. Sound did what mass could not. His core destabilized. Forty-two percent. The indicator turned red. The referee lifted a flag.
"Morrow is unable to continue!" Rine recalled him before he struck the floor. One partner remained. Veyra returned. Onix showed damage: cracked tail, Night Shade residue, fatigue from repeated movement. Veyra's mouth bled. Screech had lowered her physical defense. Ground pressure from the arena made her Electric core tighten. They could win. The possibility became dangerous.
"Smog," Rine said.
"Rock Tomb." Veyra disappeared into black vapor as stone fell. Her self-call emerged from the left. Onix struck there. An illusionary call sounded from the right. Morrow, from inside his ball, could not legally attack. The second call came from Veyra throwing her voice through pack communication. Onix turned. Veyra leaped from the smoke and bit the cracked tail segment. Stone fractured. Onix fell across one side, catching himself on a pillar.
"Again!" Rine shouted. Veyra attacked. No tactical information. Only urgency. Brock saw it.
"Bind." Onix sacrificed position and wrapped around her. Veyra vanished between stone coils. Gold exploded through the gaps. Electricity had no effect on Onix. The discharge turned inward. Veyra screamed. Mutation Stability: 51% — falling Cardiac rhythm: irregular Ground resonance accumulation: critical threshold approaching"Roar!" Rine called. She tried. Bind tightened. The old Rine measured distance to victory. Onix's tail was cracked. Veyra could Bite again if she escaped. One more command. One more burst.
One more tolerated injury. Team Rocket's voice sounded like his own. Veyra's second pain bark came muffled between stone. Rine raised his hand.
"I surrender." The words crossed the arena. Brock responded instantly.
"Release." Onix opened his coils. Veyra collapsed onto the sand. Medical teams entered. Rine reached her after the first scan rather than before it because the field rule required clear access. Her heart remained irregular for eleven seconds. The grounding pad stabilized the Electric core. Cooling medicine eased Fire bleed. Dark energy settled around the rhythm. Fifty-three percent. Then fifty-five. She opened her eyes. Rine held his hand beside her muzzle.
"I'm sorry." She pushed into it. Morrow's ball shook at his belt. The field medic read the preliminary results aloud so Rine could not replace uncertainty with catastrophe.
"No fracture. Bruising along the ribs and shoulders. Minor laceration inside the mouth. Her Fire core is overheated; Electric pathways show feedback inflammation. Dark core remains stable. She will need at least five days without elemental training and a full cardiac review before clearance." Five days. Not permanent. The number entered Rine's lungs as air. Veyra tried to rise. Three people told her no. She ignored all three until Morrow emerged halfway from his ball and formed the image of a bed over her head.
Veyra glared at him, then lowered herself onto the transport pad. The medic hid a smile. League recording lights still hovered above the field. They had captured Rine's delay, his surrender, and every second of Veyra's unstable rhythm. The footage would enter his provisional review. He wanted to resent the scrutiny. Instead, he hoped they made him watch all eleven seconds. Across the field, Brock checked Onix before approaching. The scoreboard read: WINNER: PEWTER GYM LEADER BROCK Rine looked at it.
Loss settled through him. No labor assignment followed. No overseer entered with a blade. No partner was taken. The crowd did not laugh. They applauded. Not loudly at first. Niko stood with his ridiculous sign. Tessa joined. Selene, still in Pewter after her own victory, clapped from the upper seats. Lyra remained seated but placed two fingers against the glass. Brock stopped beside Rine.
"Why did you surrender?" The question resembled the qualifier. This answer hurt more.
"I waited too long."
"Yes." No praise for eventually doing the minimum.
"I saw the win," Rine said.
"So did I."
"Was it possible?"
"Possibly." That word could torture him if he let it. Brock continued.
"A possible victory is not worth a probable permanent injury. You understood that eleven seconds late." Rine looked at Veyra.
"I know."
"Good." Brock did not award the Boulder Badge. He did not offer one for bravery, potential, or moral growth. Rine had lost the match. The League camera recorded the empty badge space beside his name. There would be no hidden promotion, pity rank, or consolation prize. Rine kept the loss anyway. It belonged to him in a way every Rocket victory never had.
"Return when Veyra is medically cleared," Brock said.
"Your registration fee will be waived."
"Why?"
"Because the next lesson should not be accounting." Rine laughed. It escaped before he could stop it. Veyra's ears rose. Morrow emerged under medical supervision, thin but stable, and formed a crown above Rine. The crown read: FIRST PLACE LOSER Rine laughed harder. Pain, relief, embarrassment, and something dangerously close to happiness moved together. He had challenged a Gym Leader. He had made mistakes. He had lost. Everyone lived. Lyra met him outside the treatment room an hour later.
"Are you all right?" she asked. The question contained more than the battle.
"No," Rine said. She nodded.
"Neither am I." Honest. Still present. Rine looked through the treatment glass. Veyra slept with Morrow floating above her. Brock's Onix occupied the larger bay beyond, its tail already being repaired with mineral paste.
"I'm going to try again," he said.
"I assumed."
"Not tomorrow." That answer made Lyra smile despite herself. Rine leaned against the wall. The Boulder Badge remained beyond him. The missing children remained missing. Gideon remained free. Direbolt remained years away. His truth had changed the space between him and Lyra in ways he could not repair through one apology. None of those things ended the road. Defeat had not closed a cage. It had opened another attempt. Rine looked at his partners.
"Again," he whispered. This time, the word did not mean now. It meant there would be a tomorrow.
