Rine noticed the first sign of surveillance at breakfast. Gastly refused to enter his shadow. The Ghost hovered near the ceiling, staring at the narrow mirror above the washbasin. When Rine approached, the reflection showed the cell exactly as it should: concrete walls, Houndour eating, Rine's pale face. For one instant, a girl stood behind him. Charcoal-grey clothing. Dark hair tied away from her face. Eyes glowing faintly blue. Rine turned. No one was there. The mirror cracked down the center.
Gastly laughed, but unease distorted the sound.
"How long?" Rine asked. The Ghost extended three wisps. Three minutes. Three visits. Three days. Identify found psychic residue embedded in the glass. The Saffron Gym had traced them. Rine dismantled the mirror and wrapped the pieces in grounding cloth. The residue persisted. Whoever watched had established a sympathetic anchor through his reflected image rather than an electronic device. Gideon would want to know. Rine did not report it. He spent the day acting normally.
Training began with Houndour's post-discharge examination. Her neurological inflammation had increased slightly after the North Gate mission, so Rine prohibited Electric work for five days. They practiced scent discrimination and low-power Ember instead. Gastly trained illusions. His ordinary projections lacked the emotional force of Cursed Smog but were safer. He reproduced bowls, doors, and crude human shapes. Detail improved when he worked from reflected surfaces. Rine placed one cracked mirror against the wall.
The girl appeared during the third exercise. This time, she stood inside the reflected cell and watched Gastly create a false doorway. Rine continued giving commands.
"Again. Smaller." Gastly's eyes moved toward the mirror.
"Ignore her." The reflected girl raised one eyebrow. She could hear him. Rine ended training and covered the glass. Psychic pressure touched the cloth, probing for an opening. His Dark veil rose. The pressure withdrew. A sentence appeared in condensation on the steel wall: > You learn quickly. Rine wiped it away. The contact continued through Saffron. The girl appeared in train windows, puddles, dark screens, and polished shop counters. Never for more than a few seconds.
She observed Rine's collection route, his treatment of Houndour, and the way Gastly moved through shadows. Once, while he negotiated an overdue payment, her reflection watched from a soup spoon. Rine began leaving messages. State your purpose. The next window answered: Determining yours. You attacked us. You stole from us. The tracker was intentional. No answer came for two days. During that time, Team Rocket prepared something large.
Cargo moved through the base after midnight: anti-Psychic helmets, Dark-type restraint equipment, portable signal jammers, and enough Potions for an extended operation. Grunts received updated maps of the Saffron Gym district. Gideon restricted access to Sub-Level Four and ordered maintenance on the primary generator. Rine used Identify on a sealed crate.
> Contents: Neural disruption collars > Intended target: Psychic-type Pokémon > Quantity: 24 > Deployment date: Nine days The raid Lyra had warned about in the original course of events was taking shape, though Rine did not yet know her name. The tracker had entered Team Rocket's base inside a jar of incense. Gideon knew the shipment might be traced; he had ordered the heist anyway. Perhaps he intended to feed the Gym false intelligence. Perhaps someone above him wanted the conflict.
Rine needed information beyond reflections. He visited Lucky Noodle after closing. Haruto let him into the back room without asking why Gastly's eyes watched from beneath his feet. Mei slept upstairs. Houndour accepted a bowl of tendon scraps and settled near the stove.
"Iron Talon has been asking about you," Haruto said. Support the creativity of authors by visiting Royal Road for this novel and more.
"Mara Vey?"
"She showed your face to three shopkeepers. Described you as endangered, not wanted." That choice mattered.
"What about the Saffron Gym?" Haruto's expression closed.
"Psychics ask without appearing to ask."
"A girl in grey."
"Lyra Sen." The name produced a faint pulse from the kettle's reflection.
"Sabrina's student," Haruto continued.
"Not an official acolyte. Handles work the Gym prefers not to place in League reports."
"Spying."
"Among other things."
"Can she be trusted?" Haruto laughed softly.
"You work for Team Rocket and ask questions like a tourist." Fair. Rine looked into the kettle.
"If you want to talk, stop hiding." The reflection changed. Lyra stood beneath the Saffron Central Fountain. Midnight showed on a clock behind her. She held up one finger, then pointed toward Rine. Alone. The image vanished. Haruto had seen none of it.
"Trouble?" he asked.
"Probably."
"You could stop walking toward it." Rine looked at Houndour and the red eyes beneath his chair.
"Not while it knows where Mira sleeps." He returned to the base and prepared. Going alone did not mean going unarmed. Houndour's ball went into an inner pocket shielded against remote lock. Gastly compressed inside the shadow of Rine's shirt rather than the one on the ground. His knife rested at his back. Kern's data chip remained hidden in a vent behind Training Cell Nineteen. At eleven forty, Gideon summoned him. The executive stood before a map of the Saffron Gym.
"You have attracted attention," Gideon said.
"The North Gate was not subtle."
"Subtlety was not the objective."
"What was?"
"To learn who responded." Gideon enlarged surveillance footage. Lyra appeared on a distant rooftop during the heist, her face partially obscured.
"Sabrina's unofficial knife," he said.
"She has taken interest in you." Rine kept his breathing even.
"If she makes contact, listen. Accept nothing. Report everything."
"Why not arrest her?"
"Because doors are most useful before the person on the other side knows you possess a key." Rine understood then. Gideon knew about the reflections. He was allowing the meeting. Rine left at eleven fifty-two under the eyes of both sides. The walk to the fountain lasted thirty-four minutes. Rine used all of them. He crossed through the Government Quarter, where League offices remained lit for overnight staff. Wanted notices rotated across public screens.
One showed a Rocket scientist accused of illegal evolution experiments. Another offered a reward for information about children missing from Celadon shelters. Rine stopped beneath that notice. Six faces looked down at him. The oldest was fifteen. The youngest looked seven. Identify could analyze the screen but not their lives. He saved the case number anyway. At the Indigo Licensing Bureau, the doors had closed hours earlier.
Through the glass, he saw examination kiosks, regional maps, and a display of first-partner care supplies. A banner announced the next public Trainer assessment. Four weeks. Before recruitment, Rine would have known every requirement. Now he studied the date as though it belonged to another species. His reflection appeared in the glass wearing the black Rocket uniform. Lyra appeared beside it. You still look. Rine wrote with one finger against the condensation. Looking is free. Not in Saffron.
Her reflection disappeared when a patrol officer approached.
"Bureau's closed," the officer said.
"I know." The man noticed Houndour's ball beneath Rine's jacket.
"Licensed?" Rine's provisional Rocket identity could survive a routine scan but might expose its restricted issuer.
"Companion Pokémon."
"Out late for a student."
"Night shift." The officer's attention moved to Rine's bruises and pale hair. Suspicion sharpened. Gastly produced a crash inside the alley across the street. The officer turned. Rine walked away at an ordinary pace. Once beyond the block, Gastly returned to his shadow with smug satisfaction.
"No property damage?" The Ghost projected an image of a fallen trash can.
"Acceptable." Rine realized he had just used a Pokémon to evade lawful inquiry. A month earlier, the act would have felt transgressive. Tonight it felt routine. He passed a café where young Trainers argued over a tournament broadcast. Their Pokémon occupied seats beside them. A Pikachu stole food from one plate. A Sandshrew slept beneath the table. Joy existed ten meters away. Rine did not resent them this time. He used them as proof. Team Rocket's world was not the entire world.
The organization benefited when recruits forgot that. At the plaza entrance, Rine paused beneath a security camera and allowed Gastly to examine the shadow cast by its housing. No secondary watchers. No obvious Rocket team. That meant Gideon's observers were better than obvious. Rine entered anyway. At the fountain, he also noticed three exits Lyra had intentionally left open. The northern walkway led toward League security. The western stair descended to the subway.
The third route passed through a maintenance corridor Identify marked with fresh psychic residue. She had prepared escape paths for him before knowing whether he would cooperate. That did not make her kind. It made her careful. Rine respected care more than reassurance. He released Houndour behind the fountain before approaching. She remained concealed within ornamental hedges, close enough to respond if the meeting became violent. Gastly hid on his body as planned. Houndour disliked the separation.
Her ball had transmitted agitation through the registration link until Rine released her. Now her aura pressed against his from a distance: alert, protective, and increasingly capable of interpreting his intent.
"Wait," he whispered. She lowered herself beneath the leaves. Rine stepped into the amber light alone in appearance only. The Saffron Central Fountain occupied a public plaza surrounded by Silph offices. At midnight, water flowed over polished black stone beneath golden lights. Security cameras covered every approach. Rine entered with his hands visible. Lyra stood on the opposite side. She looked approximately seventeen.
Too young for the calm authority she wore and old enough that Rine recognized it as another kind of armor. A Kadabra sat beside her, silver spoon resting across both hands. Identify met resistance.
> Lyra Sen > Human — Level 16 > Psychic ability: Advanced > Aura: Controlled > Affiliation: Saffron Gym — unofficial > Emotional state: Guarded curiosity > Additional information blocked > Kadabra — Level 25 > Sex: Female > Ability: Magic Guard > Innate Potential: Gold — Elite > Current Potential: Gold — Elite > Known moves: Information blocked Lyra looked directly at the invisible information before Rine.
"Identify," she said.
"That explains several things." Rine let the skill fade.
"You broke my mirror."
"You entered my room."
"Only the reflection."
"That distinction matters more to you." Lyra smiled slightly. Kadabra's spoon turned. The plaza disappeared beneath psychic silence. The silence removed every witness before a weapon was raised. It demonstrated Lyra's power more effectively than shattered stone. Houndour sensed the barrier from the hedge and rose.
"Wait," Rine said. His voice did not cross the screen, but shared aura carried the intent. She remained concealed. Lyra noticed.
"You trust her under pressure."
"I give her another option." Gastly shifted beneath Rine's shirt, cold and ready. Between two powerful psychics, Rine understood that his greatest protection was not strength. It was that neither partner believed his commands required blind sacrifice. Rine entered anyway because avoiding Lyra would not end her interest. It would merely leave Gideon and the Gym acting upon him without information. Before crossing the plaza, he reviewed his rules. No revealing Mira's exact location. No mentioning Kern's locker.
No accepting protection that excluded Houndour, Gastly, or the other children. No agreement made under psychic pressure. Gastly repeated the rules by displaying four red symbols inside his shadow. Houndour waited beneath the hedge, body low and attention fixed upon Rine. He was still afraid. The fear did not make him weak. It identified what required protection. Rine stepped toward Lyra with the Dark veil held lightly around his thoughts and his emotions intact behind it.
