Team Rocket promoted Rine the following morning. The ceremony lasted less than five minutes. Gideon replaced the red trainee designation on his watch with a black Grunt credential and issued a uniform folded inside plastic.
"Elias Kern is dead," Gideon said.
"The stolen chip has been recovered. Your performance was acceptable." Rine stood at attention. Cassian leaned against the wall with one arm bandaged where a bullet had grazed him. He had filed a report claiming Rine fired without warning during operational confusion. Gideon had deducted ammunition costs from them both. No one discussed the sniper.
"Kern mentioned a second data cache," Rine said. Cassian turned his head. Gideon's face remained still.
"Location?"
"He died before providing it." The lie passed without reaction. Dark energy lay across Rine's thoughts, not actively blocking a probe but making the truth difficult to touch. Station locker twenty-six. Code 1749. Rine had not retrieved it. Any known movement toward the station might be monitored. For now, the cache was more valuable untouched. Gideon dismissed Cassian and activated the psychic dampeners. Hypno entered.
"Your defensive response has improved," Gideon said.
"Today we determine whether it can become deliberate." Rine looked at Hypno's pendulum.
"Today?"
"You have demonstrated emotional stability after lethal action." Emotional stability. Team Rocket named emptiness as health when it produced useful behavior. The first exercise was simple. Hypno projected a surface thought, and Rine identified whether it was image, emotion, or language. The initial contacts felt like fingertips against the inside of his skull. A red apple. The smell of smoke. The word kneel. Rine recognized each and pushed it away. The second exercise required him to prevent reception entirely.
Dark energy responded to privacy, suspicion, and refusal. He imagined Houndour cornered inside her first cell, every line of her body saying no closer. Cold formed around his mind. Hypno's projection struck the barrier and vanished.
"Again," Gideon said. Pressure increased. The barrier cracked. The command kneel entered with psychic weight. Rine's legs bent. He gathered aura around his body—another instinct rather than learned technique—and forced himself upright. Pain burst behind his eyes. Hypno stopped. Blood ran from both nostrils.
"Again." They continued until Rine vomited. Between sessions, Gideon explained the theory. Psychic energy transmitted, altered, and imposed information. Aura expressed and perceived life. Dark energy rejected intrusion by creating informational disorder—a field psychic techniques could not interpret or command.
"Darkness is not wickedness," Gideon said.
"It is sovereignty. The refusal to be known." Rine wiped his mouth.
"You make it sound noble."
"All power sounds noble when described by its owner." That was one of the few honest things Gideon ever told him. The executive taught control through emotional subtraction. Rine closed doors inside himself one at a time: grief, fear, affection, doubt. Each feeling removed made the Dark barrier denser. Houndour sensed the result when he returned to the cell. She approached, then stopped. Rine's aura had gone quiet. Gastly emerged from his shadow and circled him with unusual seriousness.
"It's training." Houndour growled.
"I'm still here." The words resembled the ones he spoke after the previous session. This time, he could not feel whether they were true. He released the barrier. Emotion returned violently. Kern's body fell again. Tomas's voice spoke from the arena. Mira appeared in a Rocket uniform. Rine gripped the edge of the bed until the memories settled. Houndour crossed the remaining distance. Gastly pressed cold vapor against his shoulder. For several minutes, the three remained together. Rine understood the danger.
Dark control offered survival against Saffron's psychics, but Gideon's method trained numbness as both shield and habit. Each use taught him that feeling less made him safer. Stolen story; please report. He needed another way. Aura might provide it. Rine began practicing after lights-out. Rather than suppressing emotion, he focused upon Houndour's life beside him. Her Fire core radiated heat. Electric pathways flickered. Dark energy separated them without erasing either.
That was the answer Houndour's body offered: separation was not destruction. Rine built compartments instead of empty rooms. Fear remained behind one wall. Grief behind another. He allowed each to exist while denying Psychic energy access. Progress was slow. His first attempt lasted two seconds. The second triggered a migraine. By the end of the week, he could hold a thin Dark veil around his surface thoughts while still feeling Houndour's presence. Gastly assisted in the least responsible manner possible.
He projected sudden images while Rine meditated: Gideon wearing Elara's dress, Cassian being chased by an enormous Caterpie, Tomas sitting silently beside the bed. The first two disrupted concentration through surprise. The third shattered it through grief. Rine opened his eyes. Gastly's grin faded.
"Don't use him." The Ghost withdrew. Minutes later, a small image formed near the wall: Tomas laughing over their argument about Pewter. It was not a weapon this time. Gastly held it gently, reconstructed from Rine's memory. Rine watched until it dissolved.
"Thank you." Gastly settled into his shadow. His partners were teaching him more about mental control than Gideon understood. One taught boundaries. The other taught that memory could hurt without being an enemy. Physical training continued around the psychic work. Houndour reached Level 9 through controlled sprints, scent exercises, and two low-risk patrols. Her weight stabilized. Her current potential remained Green but approached restoration to Blue. Gastly remained Level 10.
Rine focused upon compression and safe Smog rather than combat. The Ghost learned to adjust poison concentration, create illusions without Cursed Smog, and emerge from Rine's shadow on command. The three developed a basic formation. Houndour controlled visible space. Gastly watched blind angles. Rine coordinated through short commands and aura impressions too crude to call communication. One evening, Houndour used Bite on a training target while a small current gathered around her teeth. Rine stopped the exercise.
Identify appeared. > Emergent technique: Thunder Fang > Development: 3% > Warning: jaw-path feedback remains elevated She had begun combining Electric energy with a natural physical action. Rine treated the session as a discovery, not permission to force mastery. They practiced Charge separately, guiding tiny currents toward the grounding mesh. Thunder Fang would wait until her nerves could tolerate it. That decision cost them short-term ranking points. Rine no longer cared.
At the end of the week, his watch received a mission sealed by Gideon. Rine's final training session before the mission tested whether his new method survived direct emotional pressure. Hypno projected Mira into the room. The illusion showed her inside the arena, older, a knife held in shaking hands. Across from her stood another child Rine did not recognize. His first instinct was to erase everything. Rine resisted it. Fear remained behind the Dark veil. Anger remained.
Love remained most dangerous of all, bright enough for Psychic energy to follow. He wrapped each feeling in aura without letting Hypno define it. The false Mira ordered him to kneel. Rine remained standing. The illusion changed into Tomas. Then Kern. Then his mother calling from beneath landslide debris. His barrier bent but held. Gideon increased pressure. Houndour barked from the observation room. Her Dark energy reached through the reinforced glass—not transferring power, but reminding Rine of its shape.
Gastly's red eyes appeared inside Hypno's shadow. They had been ordered to remain outside. Neither interfered physically. They made certain Rine was not alone. The psychic attack ended. Rine stayed upright, blood running from his nose but emotions intact.
"Better," Gideon said. Rine looked at him through the veil.
"You mean more useful."
"In this organization, the distinction is sentimental." Rine returned to his partners. He chose not to close the door behind him. Before that mission arrived, Rine experienced the cost of repeated psychic training. Sleep became unreliable. His dreams filled with commands spoken in Gideon's voice. During waking hours, unexpected noises triggered the Dark veil, cutting him briefly away from emotion and aura. Twice, Houndour approached and found him unable to feel her presence.
The second time, she barked directly into his face. Rine flinched. Gastly appeared laughing from the wall.
"Effective," Rine admitted. He added grounding exercises for himself. Five things he could see. Four things he could touch. Three living auras he could detect. Two memories he chose voluntarily. One reason to lower the barrier. The reason was usually Mira. Gideon offered chemical assistance after Rine's fourth session. A small black tablet waited beside the training chair.
"Focus enhancer," the executive said.
"Reduces emotional interference." Identify revealed stimulant compounds, psychic sensitizers, and a dependency risk after repeated use. Several Grunts relied upon them. Rine had seen the tremors, hollow eyes, and frantic purchases when credits ran short. Team Rocket created performance requirements, sold the drug needed to meet them, and owned the debt that followed.
"No."
"You may reconsider when natural progress slows."
"Then it slows." Gideon's Hypno turned its pendulum. The lesson became harder. Rine left with a migraine that blurred half his vision, but the tablet remained untouched. Back in the cell, he documented its composition. Gastly slipped through the infirmary wall later and returned with two more tablets—not because Rine asked, but because stealing amused him.
"Put those back." Gastly projected an image of Gideon discovering an empty bottle.
"Tempting. Still no." The Ghost reluctantly returned them. Rine's physical development advanced more safely. Better food and controlled training began filling his shoulders and legs. He remained lean, but no longer looked likely to break in a strong wind. Aura exercises helped him sense muscle fatigue before injury. He used that awareness to stop training at useful exhaustion instead of collapse. Houndour copied his routine. They performed short sprints together in the yard.
She won every race and celebrated by circling him until he became dizzy. Gastly cheated by appearing at the finish line. For ten minutes, the yard contained laughter. Then the mission alert arrived and Team Rocket returned the world to its preferred shape.
> INTERCEPTION: NORTH GATE > Target: Saffron Gym incense shipment > Operational partners: Viper, Sable, Frostfang > Objective: Seize cargo; identify psychic security response > Lethal force authorized if resistance exceeds containment ability Rine read the personnel list twice. Cassian. Iona. And a shipment belonging to Sabrina's Gym, in a city where an unknown psychic had already brushed his mind during the Old Saffron escape. Gideon was not merely testing his defenses.
He was sending Rine where someone would notice them. Before accepting, Rine opened the attached authorization page. The mission granted broad discretion over captured Gym personnel. Transfer alive earned intelligence bonuses. Dead acolytes carried no penalty if their Pokémon resisted. Team Rocket had converted human survival into a payment schedule. Rine forwarded the relevant numbers to his private archive.
"Something wrong?" Iona asked from the corridor.
"Everything has a price."
"That surprises you?"
"No. I'm deciding which prices not to collect." He accepted the mission. Houndour approached when the confirmation tone sounded. Gastly emerged from the wall wearing an illusionary yellow Gym robe and immediately tripped over fabric that did not exist. Rine stared at him. The Ghost bowed. Even preparation for violence contained ridiculous moments. Rine let himself laugh before checking their equipment. Before departure, Rine checked every item twice.
Filters, antidotes, insulated gloves, recall batteries, and food portions went into separate pockets so injury to one hand would not cost access to everything. Houndour endured the muzzle fitting, though the Gym operation permitted her to remove it once concealed. Gastly practiced hiding entirely within Rine's clothing shadow rather than the floor.
"No Cursed Smog unless I say the full name," Rine told him.
"Ordinary Smog only." Gastly projected two identical clouds and invited Rine to guess which would kill someone. Rine's expression hardened. The images disappeared.
"That is exactly why we separate the commands." The Ghost nodded. They were not merely learning how to fight together. They were learning how much force each situation justified. Team Rocket's mission authorization made death permissible; Rine refused to let permission become preference. Rine lowered the screen. Whatever Gideon expected them to become at the North Gate, they would decide the limits before arriving.
