Chương 47: The Qualifier

The qualifying field contained too much sand. Rine recognized the trap before entering. Pewter Gym's third arena had a stone perimeter, four waist-high pillars, and a surface of loose brown sand deep enough to conceal burrowing Pokémon. Viewing glass surrounded the upper level. Brock watched from behind it with Tessa, a medical officer, and two League evaluators. Niko sat in the public gallery. He held a sign. DO NOT DIE The advice met minimum expectations.
Rine stood in the challenger box with Veyra beside him and Morrow inside his shadow. Across the field waited Gym Trainer Lio Maren, a compact man wearing dust-colored clothing. Two balls rested at his belt.
"This is an evaluation," Lio said.
"I will not tell you what earns a passing result."
"Winning probably helps."
"Sometimes." The field monitor verified both rosters. Qualifier format: two versus two. No items. Switching permitted after five-second safety interval. Match ends by incapacitation, surrender, or medical stop. Tessa entered the challenger box for the final equipment check. She tested the release catches on both balls, examined Veyra's grounding harness, and passed a spectral reader through Morrow's gas.
"Amber means caution," she said.
"Red means I stop the match whether you agree or not."
"Understood."
"That answer was for them." Rine looked at his partners. Veyra barked once. Morrow formed a green circle, then changed it to red and shattered it.
"Show-off," Tessa said. She checked Rine last. Pulse elevated. Aura channels strained but stable. Dark energy resting below involuntary response.
"No projecting aura into an opponent's Pokémon. Passive sensing within the field is permitted."
"I know."
"You know many things. I am checking whether you remember them while frightened." Rine could not object to the distinction. Before leaving, Tessa offered him a flat black surrender tab. Every challenger box possessed one in case injury, silence, or psychic interference prevented a verbal call. His thumb brushed the surface. Team Rocket had never installed a way to stop. He placed the tab where either hand could reach it. Rine felt the old arena settle over the new one. Two children. Two knives. One exit.
Veyra touched his hand. The image receded.
"Ready?" Rine asked. One bark. Morrow formed a circle in shadow. Lio released Diglett. The small Ground Pokémon emerged from the sand already moving. Diglett — Female Level: 13 Potential: Green — Uncommon Ability: Sand Veil Moves: Sand Attack; Astonish; Mud-Slap; Bulldoze; Sucker Punch Every Ground move endangered Veyra. Lio knew it. Rine recalled her before the start signal. Morrow entered.
"Avoid Ground. Watch Sucker Punch." Gastly's Levitate made Bulldoze and Mud-Slap ineffective while he remained airborne. That did not make Diglett helpless. The signal chimed.
"Sand Attack," Lio said. Diglett vanished. Sand erupted across the field, not aimed at Morrow's eyes but filling the air around his gas. Particles clung to him, outlining his core and weighing the lower vapor. Sand Veil concealed Diglett at the same time.
"Night Shade, broad." Morrow formed a spectral mouth and swept it across the surface. The image struck one pillar, then another. Diglett appeared behind him.
"Sucker Punch." Dark energy hit Morrow's core before Night Shade completed. He reeled. Payback gathered automatically.
"Hold it," Rine said. Morrow wanted retaliation. Sucker Punch depended on the target preparing an attack. If Morrow attacked again, Diglett could intercept.
"Mean Look." Status, not direct damage. Morrow's red eyes expanded through the dusty air. Diglett froze against the surface, unable to burrow away. Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author.
"Now Payback." The stored Dark force struck. Diglett rolled across the sand. Lio did not flinch.
"Astonish." The Ground-type cried sharply. Ghost energy carried the sound. Morrow flinched, Mean Look breaking. Diglett disappeared. Rine followed with aura. The field held one moving life beneath sand, but the pillars reflected vibration.
"Above the center." Morrow rose.
"Bulldoze." Ground energy spread through the entire arena. It could not strike Levitate directly, but the pillars shook. One cracked near the base and fell. Rock and Ground were different. Morrow dodged the pillar. A second toppled from behind and clipped him. His cohesion dropped.
"Switch!" The field began its five-second interval. Morrow had to reach the recall line. Diglett surfaced between him and Rine.
"Sucker Punch," Lio said. Morrow was not attacking. The Dark move failed to form fully. He passed through Diglett's body and crossed the line. Rine recalled him. Veyra entered. The worst matchup on the field now faced her. Rine had chosen it because Diglett was tired, exposed, and restricted by the destroyed terrain. Calculated danger. Not avoidance. Veyra's paws touched sand. Her Electric core tightened.
"Smog, low." Black vapor spread.
"Sand Attack," Lio answered. The two clouds collided. Visibility vanished. Veyra called. Her self-note gave Morrow a position from inside his ball. The Pokédex translated no words, but Rine felt the direction through pack recognition. Diglett moved beneath her.
"Jump." Veyra launched before Mud-Slap broke the surface. Ground energy passed below.
"Bite on landing." She came down beside Diglett and caught the loose skin behind its head. No current. No flame. Diglett cried surrender. Veyra released. The field monitor marked the first defeat. Niko screamed from the gallery. Lio recalled Diglett and released Sandshrew. The species struck Rine harder than any type pressure. This one was male, healthy, and wore no collar. Sandshrew — Level 14 Ability: Sand Veil Moves: Defense Curl; Rollout; Fury Cutter; Bulldoze Veyra remembered Celadon.
Gold raced across her ribs.
"Status." She did not respond. Lio waited. He could have attacked during the hesitation. The evaluation included restraint on both sides.
"Veyra." Rine lowered his voice.
"Two barks if you need out." Her current flickered. Two barks.
"Switch." The interval began. Sandshrew remained still until Veyra crossed the recall line. Rine returned her. Morrow emerged with cohesion at sixty-eight percent.
"Can you continue?" He formed a circle with one missing section. Not fully safe. Willing. Rine looked at the medical officer. No stop signal.
"One exchange." Lio nodded.
"Sandshrew, Rollout." Defense Curl had not prepared it, so the attack began at moderate force. Morrow waited.
"Night Shade at the ground." His spectral image struck sand in front of Sandshrew. The rolling Pokémon hit the depression and launched upward.
"Lick." Morrow crossed beneath and extended his tongue. Ghost energy contacted Sandshrew's exposed underside. Paralysis triggered. Sandshrew landed badly but curled before impact. Morrow's cohesion fell to sixty-two. Rine called, "Surrender." The word left him before the next attack. The field froze. Lio lowered his hand. The monitor chimed. Match awarded to Gym Trainer Lio Maren. Rine's stomach dropped. Every old instinct called the result failure.
He had one Pokémon capable of continuing and an opponent temporarily paralyzed. He could have pushed. He had surrendered while Morrow was still conscious. Niko's sign lowered. No one shouted. Medical staff entered. They checked Diglett, Sandshrew, Veyra, and Morrow in that order. Morrow required spectral rest but no emergency treatment. Veyra's current stabilized after leaving the Ground-saturated field. Lio shook Rine's hand.
"Why stop?"
"Morrow's cohesion fell six percent in one exchange. Veyra requested recall. Winning required treating willingness as capacity."
"Good." The upper screen displayed: QUALIFIER: PASSED Rine stared.
"I lost." Brock's voice came through the arena speakers.
"You were evaluated on losing." The trap had never been the sand. It had been the scoreboard. The evaluators did not let him leave with that revelation intact and uncomplicated. They moved the teams into a recovery room divided by a low glass barrier. Diglett rested beneath a heated soil blanket. Sandshrew accepted a spray for the numbness left by Lick. Morrow floated inside a stabilizing ring while Veyra watched the Ground Pokémon through the glass. The senior evaluator introduced herself as Anika Thorne.
Her League badge carried the crossed lines of Trainer education and Pokémon welfare.
"You passed," she said, "but passing does not mean every choice was correct." Rine sat straighter. She replayed Morrow's first switch. The falling pillar paused on the wall screen. Diglett's failed Sucker Punch had missed his core by less than the width of Rine's palm.
"You waited for a favorable tactical moment instead of switching when cohesion first dropped," Thorne said.
"He was still stable."
"Stable is not the same as unthreatened." The replay continued to Veyra's entrance against the exhausted Diglett.
"You accepted a severe type disadvantage because you believed you had reduced its options," Lio said.
"Reasonable. Then you used Bite without elemental enhancement. Good control. Why?"
"Fire would have spread through Smog. Electricity could have grounded through the sand and back into her core."
"Correct." The screen shifted to Sandshrew. Veyra's ribs lit gold in the replay. Two barks followed.
"This is why you passed," Thorne said.
"Because she asked to leave?"
"Because you asked in a form she could answer, and then treated the answer as binding." Rine glanced at Veyra. In the orphanage, consent had been another word adults used on public inspection days. Thorne replayed the final exchange. Morrow's cohesion graph fell from sixty-eight to sixty-two. Sandshrew lay paralyzed. The tactical window remained obvious.
"You established one exchange," she said.
"You kept the agreement despite an opportunity to win. Your surrender came before a red medical state and without forcing the referee to protect your Pokémon from you." The sentence was clinical. It cut deeper than accusation.
"Would I have failed if I continued?" Rine asked.
"Not automatically. We evaluate reasons and consequences. You would have failed if you stopped listening." On the other side of the glass, Sandshrew stood. Veyra did too. Lio opened the connecting gate but gave neither Pokémon a command. Sandshrew approached first, claws tucked close to his belly. Veyra's current rose, then steadied. She sniffed the air. The Sandshrew turned sideways and began digging in the recovery soil, exposing his back without submission. Healthy. Unrestrained. Not the Sandshrew from Celadon.
Veyra stepped close enough to smell him, then returned to Rine by choice. No friendship formed. No trauma disappeared. The meeting simply ended without blood. That mattered. Thorne slid the formal score sheet across the table. Species knowledge: Pass Command clarity: Pass Partner communication: Pass Tactical adaptation: Conditional Pass Medical judgment: Pass Response to surrender: Pass"Conditional?" Rine asked.
"You adapted well after your plans failed," Lio said.
"You were slower to admit they had failed." The criticism described more than a battle.
"How do I remove the condition?"
"You don't remove it," Thorne said.
"You give us more evidence. Battle plans should contain decision points, not just attacks. Write down what would make you switch, surrender, or abandon an approach before adrenaline begins renegotiating." Rine opened his notebook.
"Not now. After your partners finish treatment." He closed it again. Morrow added an invisible entry to the air. ABANDON APPROACH IF TRAINER BECOMES HIMSELF Only the Ghost understood what that meant. Thorne signed the final line.
"A qualifier does not prove you are safe forever. It proves you can enter a regulated match with supervision and learn from what happens there."
"And if I lose the Gym battle?"
"Then the mountain will continue existing." Pewter humor, Rine was learning, arrived with a perfectly straight face. The answer irritated him into breathing normally. That may have been its purpose. Rine looked at Morrow inside the recovery ring. The Ghost opened one eye and formed a tiny white flag. Veyra lay beside him, unashamed of asking to leave. Something tight inside Rine loosened. His official Pewter challenge was approved for three days later. The roster would be first-badge class. Two against two.
No further details. Rine walked from the arena carrying both balls rather than wearing them at his belt. Niko met him outside.
"You passed by surrendering."
"Apparently."
"That is ridiculous."
"Deeply." Niko grinned.
"I'm trying it."
"You still need to demonstrate judgment."
"I'll surrender intelligently." Pebble struck his ankle. Rine returned to the dormitory. Three days until Brock. For the first time, the thought felt like anticipation rather than a countdown to execution.
