The Celadon Pokémon Medical Institute did not smell like a cage. That should have helped. It smelled of disinfectant, warm plastic, medicinal herbs, and the sweet perfume drifting from the Gym district. Its examination rooms used soft lighting instead of bare bulbs. The doors opened from both sides. Every restraint was stored behind a sealed panel. Houndour distrusted it immediately. She stood between Rine's legs in the reception hall, muscles rigid beneath her charcoal coat.
Golden current traced the altered bones along her chest. A Chansey carrying folded towels gave her a wide berth.
"Mutation consult?" the receptionist asked. Rine presented his license and the referral from the Route Seven Ranger. The woman's professional smile faltered when his criminal-status notice appeared. She recovered quickly.
"Doctor Mireya Sen will supervise. Your Ghost-type may use the spectral rest alcove while you wait." Gastly inspected the alcove—a moonstone-lined recess supplied with filtered poison gas—and sank into Rine's shadow instead.
"He declines," Rine said. The receptionist looked beneath his chair.
"Of course." They waited forty minutes. Rine spent thirty-eight of them identifying exits. Doctor Sen arrived without a coat. She was a short woman in her fifties, with silver threaded through black hair and a prosthetic left hand shaped for delicate veterinary work. A Venonat followed at her heel, its compound eyes hidden behind tinted diagnostic lenses.
"Rine Frostfang?" He stood.
"I know the file," she said.
"I don't need you to repeat the dramatic portions in a public waiting room." Rine decided he liked her slightly. The examination suite contained an open platform surrounded by moveable scanners. No table. No straps. Sen sat on the floor.
"Your Houndour may remain wherever she chooses. I can perform a poor scan from a distance, a better scan with her cooperation, or no scan at all."
"What happens if she refuses?"
"I explain the risks we cannot measure, and you decide whether to remain in Celadon for observation." No threat of confiscation. Houndour watched her. Venonat approached halfway and stopped. Its antennae quivered. Houndour sniffed. The Bug-type sat. Doctor Sen placed the first scanner on the floor between them. Houndour looked at Rine.
"Your choice." She crossed the room and touched the device. The scan lasted twenty-three minutes. Light moved across her bones. Thermal imaging mapped Fire-type organs around her lungs and stomach. Conductive imaging traced the Boltund-derived channels woven through her spinal cord. Dark energy produced less visible results, absorbing the scanner's field and leaving a silhouette around her heart. Rine used Identify at the same time. For the first time, the skill did not merely present information.
It responded to the medical display, reconciling measurements with whatever impossible structure translated the world for him. Houndour — Female Level: 11 Typing: Dark / Fire / Electric Standard Ability: Early Bird Mutation Trait: Elemental Dynamo — Immature Innate Potential: Gold — Rare Current Potential: Blue — recovering Mutation Stability: 63% Primary danger: Ground-type resonance; cardiac desynchronization; elemental bleed Additional layers opened when Rine focused.
Inherited Value Profile Vitality: 22 / 31 Physical Attack: 25 / 31 Physical Defense: 18 / 31 Special Attack: 31 / 31 Special Defense: 21 / 31 Speed: 30 / 31 Effort Development Vitality: 14 Physical Attack: 19 Physical Defense: 7 Special Attack: 23 Special Defense: 9 Speed: 31 The values resembled the hidden numbers from his old games, but flesh made them less absolute.
Inherited Values described natural efficiencies: density of muscle attachment, conductivity of nerves, capacity of elemental organs, and dozens of biological advantages reduced to six familiar categories. Effort Values measured adaptations earned through activity. Team Rocket's starvation had not increased them efficiently. Terror sprints developed speed while damaging joints. Uncontrolled discharge strengthened Special Attack pathways while inflaming the nervous system.
Combat built physical responses without the nutrition required to repair them. Rine had once imagined EV training as defeating the correct species until invisible points accumulated. In reality, adaptation required stress, recovery, food, and time. Doctor Sen noticed the direction of his attention.
"Your talent sees inherited markers?"
"Numerically."
"Do not worship the numbers." This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
"I don't." He had, once.
"A lower natural affinity can improve through intelligent conditioning," Sen said.
"A perfect affinity can be ruined through injury. Potential describes a ceiling under current conditions, not a commandment." Rine thought of Ekans losing futures to an untreated collar.
"And raising potential?"
"Proper care can restore suppressed development and, rarely, broaden it. No Pokémon climbs forever. Bodies retain history." Gray potential might reach only two ranks above its origin. Even extraordinary intervention could not turn every common Pokémon into a champion prospect. That did not make common lives less valuable. Three rotating images appeared on Doctor Sen's monitor.
"She does not possess three hearts," Sen said. Rine had not asked.
"The media will call it that if her information leaks. They like simple lies." The doctor enlarged the thoracic image.
"She has one heart and three linked elemental cores. Most dual types develop interdependent channels before birth. Your partner did not. The Dark and Fire structures are Houndour-standard. The Electric structure grew afterward along inherited Boltund tissue."
"Her parents were Houndoom and Boltund." Sen's fingers paused above the display.
"Confirmed parentage?"
"Identify."
"Your psychic diagnostic talent." That was the explanation Sabrina's attorneys had placed in his record.
"Yes."
"It agrees with the genetic markers." Sen leaned closer.
"Natural cross-species conception between those lines should be extraordinarily unlikely. Viable offspring with a stable third elemental expression should be worse."
"Team Rocket engineered her?"
"I don't see laboratory splicing. That does not exclude selective breeding, fertility treatment, or induced mutation during gestation." Houndour did not understand every word. She understood the attention. Her fur rose. Sen reduced the screen.
"She is a patient, not a paper." The statement was directed at herself as much as Rine.
"What does Elemental Dynamo do?" he asked.
"At present? It keeps her alive badly." Sen displayed the current moving between cores. Fire generated heat. Electric channels redirected a portion into muscular output. Dark energy insulated the nervous system from both. When the rhythm aligned, Houndour's physical acceleration increased and her elemental recovery improved. When it did not, electricity discharged through organs built to contain flame.
"The Static-Link exposure scarred her," Sen continued, "but it also forced the conductive pathways into a repeatable circuit. I would never recommend the method. Since it happened, we can use the result." Rine remembered the battery exploding around her. He had ordered the bite.
"Her greatest type weakness is Ground," Sen said.
"Fire is vulnerable. Electric is vulnerable. In a three-type interaction, those weaknesses compound. A strong Ground move could disrupt all three cores at once." Four times the effective interaction, Rine thought. The arithmetic from the games became an image of Houndour's heart losing rhythm.
"Water and Rock remain significant. Fighting and Fairy attacks threaten the Dark core. She resists several other interactions unusually well, but I would prefer you not test the list by having people strike her."
"That was not my plan."
"You are a Trainer. Eventually it will be someone's plan." Sen printed emergency procedures onto Rine's Pokédex: grounding pads for uncontrolled discharge, cooling medication for Fire bleed, Dark-suppressant prohibited except under specialist care, immediate Center transport after any direct Ground attack.
"Can the mutation stabilize completely?"
"Possibly. Not soon."
"Evolution?" Doctor Sen's expression sharpened.
"Standard Houndoom evolution is unlikely." Rine knew the answer before Identify changed. Divergent evolution confirmed. Minimum threshold: Level 36 Catalyst quality requirement detected. Additional conditions unresolved.
"Her Electric core is anchored through the same tissue that would restructure during evolution," Sen said.
"A normal evolution could collapse it. An ordinary Thunder Stone could force an incomplete change. Do not expose her to one."
"What catalyst would be safe?"
"I don't know." Rine disliked the answer. He respected it. Sen collected blood, shed fur, and a saliva sample only after Houndour accepted each tool. She offered a research-consent form with three boxes. Treatment use only. Anonymous research use. Identified research use with compensation. Rine selected treatment only.
"That limits our ability to consult outside specialists," Sen warned.
"Then ask me before each consultation."
"Reasonable." No argument. No claim that knowledge outweighed ownership. Again, the world outside Team Rocket disturbed Rine by making basic decency feel revolutionary. Gastly's examination came next. He emerged reluctantly and settled inside a ring of moonstone dust. Venonat used its antennae to measure spectral cohesion. Doctor Sen dimmed the room.
Gastly — Male Level: 10 Type: Ghost / Poison Ability: Levitate Innate Potential: Purple — Epic Current Potential: Green — Uncommon Condition: recovering spectral fragmentation Cursed Smog: mutation-derived expression; use restricted Gastly bared his fangs at the word restricted.
"Medically restricted," Sen said.
"Not morally condemned." He considered that and stopped. The damage to his core was healing. His current potential might return to Blue within two months, but only if he avoided large-scale dispersion and overuse of Cursed Smog. Ordinary Ghost techniques—Lick, Hypnosis, Mean Look, and controlled Night Shade exercises—would place less stress on him.
"He knows Night Shade?" Rine asked.
"His core understands the shape. His execution is poor." Gastly produced a wounded expression. Sen was unmoved.
"Very poor." Rine almost smiled. The appointment cost more than every possession he had owned at the orphanage. Restitution covered most of it. The remaining seventy Poké Dollars came from his travel account. Spending money on care still felt like failure. Rine recognized Gideon's voice inside that judgment and paid. The institute assigned them a low-cost recovery room for one night. Houndour received measured food rich in iron and Fire-type mineral salts.
Gastly absorbed a diluted poison substrate that smelled faintly of overripe berries. Rine contacted Lyra after sunset. Her image appeared above the communication token, grainy with encryption.
"You reached Celadon."
"The local plants have not killed Gastly yet." Gastly formed an obscene gesture in vapor. Lyra pretended not to see it.
"The clinic?" Rine summarized the findings, including the Ground vulnerability and divergent evolution.
"Sabrina may know evolutionary theorists."
"No identifiable records leave this clinic without consent."
"I was suggesting names, not theft."
"I know." Lyra studied him.
"You expected theft."
"Yes."
"That is fair." Her willingness to accept the suspicion made him feel worse than anger would have.
"How is your remedial discipline?"
"I spent six hours maintaining a psychic barrier while three Abra tried to distract me."
"How?"
"One stole my lunch. One imitated Sabrina's voice. The third slept."
"Effective."
"I hate all of them." The warmth between them survived the distance. Houndour rose from her meal and approached the projection. Lyra lowered her hand until it appeared level with the dog's nose.
"Hello," she said. Houndour sniffed light. Gastly placed an illusionary kiss mark on Rine's cheek. Rine closed the projection. The Ghost fled through the wall. Later, while Houndour slept, Rine reviewed the medical file. Every page bore access controls. Every sample had a tracking number. The institute's network showed no external transfers. At 1: 13 in the morning, one transfer attempt appeared. It lasted less than a second. Unauthorized query blocked. Requested file: Frostfang-Houndour genomic scan.
Origin: Celadon municipal entertainment subnet. Rine sat upright. The entertainment subnet served theaters, arcades, and the Game Corner district. He sent the record to Mara. Her reply came immediately. Lock the door. Do not leave the institute. Ranger response en route. Houndour was already awake. Gold moved beneath her skin. Gastly returned through the wall, no longer smiling. From the corridor came the quiet metallic sound of the recovery wing's fire door locking from the outside.
The attack had begun before any weapon appeared. Rine understood that too late. He would remember afterward that civilized surroundings had lowered his guard more effectively than any threat. Team Rocket had learned to wear clean walls long before he had.
