lectivire's scream traveled through the metal before Rine heard it. The generator hub occupied a cylindrical chamber wrapped around a Silph turbine. Three magnetic clamps held Electivire upright. Cables pierced a restraint harness along his tails, shoulders, and spine. Electricity poured from him into the base faster than his body could safely produce it. Wallace stood at the control station with a pistol against his head. The guard holding it turned when Lyra entered.
Kadabra's Psychic struck the weapon, folding the barrel sideways. Rine crossed the distance and drove his good shoulder into the guard's chest. Pain nearly blinded him. Wallace finished the fight with a wrench.
"You're early," the technician said.
"So was Gideon." The turbine load read one hundred forty-three percent.
"We can't taper," Wallace said.
"If we disconnect now, core feedback cooks half the level." Rine forced Identify across the system. > Electivire — Level 38 > Male > Current Potential: Purple — Exceptional > Condition: Critical exhaustion; stimulant dependency; cardiac arrhythmia > Ability: Motor Drive > Emotional state: Rage; fear; conscious Rine approached the magnetic field. His hair lifted. His teeth hummed. Aura revealed Electivire as a sun trapped inside wire.
"Can he absorb the feedback?" Wallace shook his head.
"Not while the harness directs output."
"Reverse the tails first."
"He'll attack."
"Reasonably." Lyra stepped closer.
"I can hold him."
"No mind control."
"Telekinetic restraint." Rine looked at Electivire.
"Only if he attacks." He moved into the field. Pain from his shoulder vanished beneath electrical pressure. Electivire opened bloodshot eyes.
"We're removing the harness." The Pokémon roared. Identify translated no language. Aura carried enough: hatred of black uniforms, memory of needles, expectation that every approaching human brought pain. Rine removed his Rocket jacket. It was symbolic. Electivire was not fooled.
"I know." Houndour's ball warmed. Her Electric mutation responded to the field. Rine released her behind the safety line. She saw Electivire and stopped. Electric energy connected them across the chamber—his immense and mature, hers unstable but familiar. Houndour lowered herself, not submissive to humans but respectful of another creature in pain. Electivire's rage shifted toward attention.
"Wallace. First feed." The tail cable reversed. Electivire convulsed. Energy surged into him instead of out. Lyra caught falling machinery without touching his body.
"Second." The turbine screamed. Rine used aura to sense the cardiac rhythm. Three fast beats, pause, two weak.
"Wait." Wallace's hand hovered. Rine matched his breathing to the rhythm and projected calm—not control, only presence. Houndour whined softly. Electivire looked at her. His heart steadied.
"Now." The second tail feed disengaged. The generator dropped below ninety percent. Alarms multiplied. The magnetic clamps opened. Electivire fell. Lyra caught his weight telekinetically and lowered him rather than pinning him. Houndour approached first. A spark passed between their noses. Electivire could have killed her. He placed one enormous hand beside her instead. Rine exhaled. Wallace isolated the core. Power failed across the base. Darkness arrived. For three seconds, there was silence.
Then every unsecured door unlocked.
"We need to move," Lyra said. Electivire stood unsteadily. Rine offered an empty Ultra Ball taken from the emergency cabinet.
"Transport only. Your choice." This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. Electivire struck it from his hand. Fair. Wallace opened the freight lift.
"This reaches the river outlet."
"Take him."
"He'll kill me." Rine looked at Electivire.
"Wallace helped." The Pokémon's aura remained furious, but he entered the lift. Wallace followed at a careful distance. Before the doors closed, Rine gave him the Iron Talon signal frequency.
"Green at the outlet." Wallace nodded. The lift descended. Lyra leaned against the console, breathing hard. Maintaining telekinesis during overload had drained her. Without the controlled mask, she looked frightened and young. Rine's injured arm hung uselessly.
"Now treatment," she said. The emergency lights turned red. Gideon's voice came through the intercom.
"Rine Frostfang. Control room. Bring the girl." Lyra looked up.
"He knows."
"He always knew enough." Houndour growled toward the ceiling. Rine recalled her to protect her injuries. He and Lyra climbed toward Gideon. Power failure transformed the base into a different organism. Ventilation slowed. Electronic locks opened or sealed according to mechanical defaults. Emergency batteries illuminated arrows pointing toward exits Gideon had already blocked. The smell of smoke entered Level Four. Electivire remained beside the freight lift after Wallace entered. He could have escaped alone.
Instead, he caught the doors with both hands before they closed. The Pokémon looked at Rine. Aura carried a question more clearly now: Others?
"Holding cells on Level Three." Lyra touched Rine's arm.
"The lift is the safe route." Electivire released the doors and walked toward the stair.
"Apparently not," Rine said. They followed him. Level Three held Electric and Steel Pokémon used for research. Manual releases required physical levers after power loss. Electivire tore the first door from its housing. Inside, two Magnemite, a paralysed Voltorb, and a scarred Jolteon recoiled from freedom. Electivire rumbled softly. The Pokémon emerged. Rine and Lyra opened the remaining low-risk rooms. One contained a Magneton too damaged to levitate; Kadabra carried it.
Another contained electrode shells with no life signs. Rine covered them rather than examining the procedures that emptied them. The work delayed escape by another eight minutes. Wallace transmitted amber from the lift: smoke at the river outlet, Iron Talon approaching. Electivire guided the freed Pokémon into the freight car and entered last. Before departure, he placed one hand above Houndour's ball. Electricity passed between them without physical contact.
Identify registered: > Elemental regulation insight acquired > Thunder Fang development: 8% > Electrical pathway stress reduced temporarily Not a move taught magically. A living example understood through compatible energy. Rine bowed his head.
"Thank you." Electivire looked toward the Rocket uniform tied around Rine's waist. Rine removed it and threw it into the generator chamber. The lift descended. Lyra watched the black cloth disappear.
"Dramatic."
"Gastly is a bad influence." Red eyes opened in his shadow, offended. They turned toward the control spine. The base intercom came alive on reserve power. Gideon requested Rine by name, voice calm while the facility failed around him.
"He wants you angry," Lyra said.
"He usually gets what he wants."
"Not tonight." Rine flexed his good hand around the knife handle.
"We'll see." At the next junction, Cassian waited. The generator shutdown changed Houndour. Not evolution. Not a sudden mastery. Electivire's controlled exchange gave her nervous system a pattern it had lacked since birth. Identify showed Electric energy routing around damaged tissue rather than crashing through it.
> Elemental Dynamo stability increased > Safe discharge threshold improved by approximately 6% > Current potential: Blue — Rare > Recovery toward innate Gold remains long-term Six percent would not win a war. It could prevent a fatal mistake. Rine recorded the improvement and still prohibited full discharge. Lyra watched.
"Most Trainers would test the new threshold."
"Most Trainers didn't receive her half-starved."
"No." The freight lift descended carrying Electivire and the captives. Rine waited until Wallace transmitted that movement had begun. Only then did they turn toward Gideon. In the dark stairwell, Lyra examined Rine's aura.
"Your barrier is failing."
"Incense."
"And blood loss." She placed two fingers near his temple without touching.
"I can reinforce it." Rine hesitated. Psychic assistance required opening a path.
"Surface only."
"Surface only." He lowered one narrow section. Lyra's energy entered gently, supporting the Dark veil without searching beyond it. The intimacy of controlled access felt more dangerous than her earlier violation. Trust provided the possibility of betrayal because a door existed. Lyra withdrew exactly when promised.
"Better?"
"Yes."
"You sound disappointed."
"I dislike owing people."
"Then consider it repayment for opening the north gate."
"That was for the children."
"So was this." The accounting failed because not every act needed debt. They continued in silence. Cassian waited at the crossroads with Ekans, Golbat, and the belief that power still came from making something hurt first. Wallace's green signal arrived thirty seconds later. Electivire and the freed Pokémon had reached the river outlet. Iron Talon medics were treating them from a distance because Electivire refused human contact. No deaths. Rine allowed himself one breath of relief.
The generator core continued spinning without living input, slowly winding down. Wallace's sequence had prevented overload, but Gideon could restart emergency draw from the control room if another source was connected.
"What source?" Lyra asked. Rine scanned the schematic. Twenty-four neural collars. The stolen Gym incense had not been intended merely as bait. Gideon planned to link captured Psychic Pokémon into an emergency network, using their amplified minds to power dampeners and weapons.
"The Abra," Rine said.
"They escaped."
"Then he needs replacements." Lyra's face hardened. Her people fighting above were the intended replacements. The raid had been planned from both directions. The Gym tracked the shipment. Gideon allowed it, expecting a supply of psychics to enter his trap. Rine copied the schematic to Lyra.
"Send this to Sabrina." She did. Across the base, Gym orders changed from advance to withdrawal and containment. Gideon's ambush lost its primary fuel. The victory came from information rather than force. Rine thought Tomas would have found that disappointingly sensible. Then Cassian blocked the route, and sensible options became scarce again. Electivire's departure left a final mark on the chamber. Where his feet had stood, heat fused the floor into dark glass. Rine touched it with his good hand.
Identify revealed years of electrical saturation, traces of sedatives, and blood beneath the harness station. The generator had been operated for eleven months. Wallace had worked here during all of them. The technician's assistance tonight did not erase that history. Rine transmitted a copy of the finding to Mara with Wallace's cooperation noted separately from his complicity. Rescue required allies who had done wrong. Justice required refusing to rewrite them as innocent afterward.
Lyra watched him send the report.
"He may receive prison time."
"He knows."
"He helped because you offered extraction."
"He helped because Gideon was going to kill him."
"Does motive reduce the value?"
"No. It changes the story." Rine stood with difficulty.
"I am tired of Team Rocket controlling every story." They left the glass footprint untouched for investigators. At the stair, Houndour looked back once. Perhaps she sensed Electivire's pain embedded in the room. Perhaps she merely heard Cassian approaching. Her growl answered before his footsteps did. Electivire had paused at the ruined threshold. Its broad back nearly filled it, black stripes disappearing into the emergency dark. It looked at Wallace. The technician went still.
Rine saw the history between them without needing Identify: electrodes tightened during resistance, food withheld to force output, maintenance performed while the Pokémon remained conscious. Wallace had not designed the harness, but his hands had serviced it. He lowered his gaze.
"I'm sorry." Electivire's tails lifted. Electricity crawled along their blunt ends with enough force to make every loose screw in the room quiver. Rine did not intervene. Forgiveness extracted under pressure would be another form of control. After several long seconds, Electivire struck the floor beside Wallace. Concrete burst upward. The technician fell, shielding his head. The second strike never came. Electivire turned away and vanished into the utility passage. Wallace stared at the crater.
"It spared me."
"It chose not to kill you," Rine said.
"Don't make that choice prettier than it was." Wallace swallowed and nodded. The generator room continued cooling around them. Without Electivire's forced output, the magnetic pressure faded until Rine could no longer taste copper behind his teeth. Freedom did not always look merciful. Sometimes it looked like having enough power to take revenge and leaving anyway. Wallace rose unsteadily and collected the broken restraint pins.
"Why keep those?" Lyra asked.
"Chain of evidence." He sealed them in a maintenance pouch and signed across the closure. His handwriting shook. Rine had expected redemption to feel cleaner. Instead it looked like a guilty man preserving the tools of his own prosecution. That, too, was a kind of beginning. An ugly one, perhaps, but honest. Honesty would have to be enough for tonight.
