We pushed significantly deeper into the dense heart of the woods, and it did not take long for the entire environment to take a massive turn for the deeply disturbing. The damp ground beneath our boots rapidly began to be thoroughly coated with thick, bubbling layers of that foul purple goo, while a heavy, swirling blanket of toxic purple smoke choked out what little daylight managed to filter through the canopy.
It was text-book, unadulterated environmental corruption, looking exactly as if some cosmic entity had violently spilled a giant bottle of glowing radioactive grape soda all over the wilderness. The combination of the naturally dark, overlapping branches and this overwhelming tide of purple corruption made the immediate area incredibly hard to navigate.
If you did not watch your footing every single microsecond, you were practically guaranteed to sink your heel into a puddle of toxic sludge or completely lose sight of the person marching directly in front of your nose. Fortunately for our collective survival, Fiona stepped right up to the plate to anchor our formation.
Thanks to her extraordinarily heightened sensory perception, she was able to track a clean path straight through the toxic haze, allowing our highly dysfunctional caravan to successfully navigate the hazardous terrain without walking directly off a cliff.
"Where on earth is that classic, glowing golden quest thread that is supposed to guide us whenever it comes to complicated navigation?" I asked, throwing my hands out in a gesture of pure, comical exasperation as I squinted through the haze.
"I am telling you right now, if Fiona did not happen to be here acting as our resident bloodhound, our entire party would be as good as hopelessly lost in this glowing sludge." Fiona abruptly raised her hand into the thick air, forming a rigid barrier that instantly brought our entire marching line to a grinding halt.
"Whisht, haud on, the haill lot o' thae craturs are richt up ahead, ye ken, and they'll be crashin' straucht intae us in a wee meenit!" Fiona proclaimed with an incredibly bright, energetic voice that practically radiated absolute kindness, even though her complex dialect sounded like she was actively speaking through a mouthful of marbles.
She vigorously gestured during every single word that escaped her lips, throwing her arms forward to indicate a massive distance and then rapidly tapping her wrist to show the impending arrival of our hostile visitors.
"Alright, folks, I am pretty sure she is telling us that the bad guys are sitting right up ahead of our position," I announced, turning toward the rest of the group while pointing a thumb toward the murky trail.
"We should absolutely set up our defensive perimeter and prepare for a full scale attack right here, that way we can take them by complete surprise the exact microsecond they try to pass through this specific choke point." The absolute second I finished my translation, Fiona began to nod her head up and down at a thoroughly frantic velocity while clapping her hands together in a joyous, high-speed rhythm.
She looked completely ecstatic, her face lighting up with genuine happiness because someone had actually managed to decode her linguistic puzzle on the very first attempt. If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. To be completely fair, she was not actually that impossible to understand if you really paid attention to her actions. I was honestly just being too incredibly stupid to keep up with her unique wavelength earlier this morning.
"You four should absolutely stick together in a tight defensive cluster," I said, waving my hand to gesture toward the immediate clearing.
"I am going to scale one of these overgrown branches to do a little aerial scouting. My gut is telling me it is not just the lumbering Fungal Shamblers moving in on our position. Those incredibly annoying, sneaky little Creepers are definitely tailing our footsteps too." Aiko cautiously looked around the immediate area, her messy dark bangs shifting as she squinted into the purple haze.
"I... I truly cannot see a single thing hiding out there, Arthur-san," Aiko whispered, her incredibly low voice stuttering slightly as she scanned the heavy treeline.
"That is because you need a solid investment in intelligence statistics to boost your baseline observation capabilities," I explained, offering her a reassuring smile.
"But given the obvious fact that you are a highly specialized physical combat expert, you can easily just rely on our mental departments whenever it comes to scanning the environment." June instantly stepped forward, her pristine features tightening as she cast a deeply offended glare straight at my face.
"And why on earth am I completely unable to perceive these alleged hidden threats?" June demanded to know, her thick British accent swelling with an incredible peak of majestic grandeur and narcissistic pride.
"I possess an extraordinarily high intelligence rating, one that is definitively, undeniably way higher than your meager mental capacity." I looked at her for a brief second, a thoroughly amused smirk spreading across my mouth as I prepared to deliver a prime piece of unfiltered feedback.
"Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you are constantly focusing every single ounce of your majestic attention on your own magnificent self, meaning you are literally incapable of observing anything else happening in the universe," I shot right back at her. I was fully expecting her to completely lose her royal composure and launch into a full-scale verbal retaliation, but instead, her pristine eyebrows simply rose in a moment of quiet realization.
She actually looked like my sarcastic comment had just unlocked a perfectly logical epiphany that made complete sense to her narcissistic mind, which was absolutely, definitively not my original intention.
"My magnificent companions, you must immediately position yourselves securely behind my shield!" Dimitri loudly commanded, his massive chest inflating as his thick, booming Russian accent rumbled through the quiet woods.
"For when we stand together as a unified wall of iron, there is absolutely no force in this world that can ever hope to pierce through our righteous defenses!" Leaving our burly vanguard to establish his inspirational fortress down below, I quickly lunged toward the nearest massive trunk and began to scramble up the rough bark.
I climbed high into the upper branches, using every single bit of my physical leverage until I finally positioned myself on a sturdy, elevated perch that provided me with a spectacularly large view of the entire surrounding sector. Leaning forward from my wooden vantage point, I could easily track the exact positions of my heavily armed teammates directly beneath me.
At the exact same moment, I cast my gaze out toward the deeper brush, instantly noticing a massive line of shaking trees vibrating against the horizon, which served as a perfectly clear indication that the lumbering Fungal Shamblers were already remarkably close to our coordinate sector.
I quickly tore my eyes away from the distant stampede to aggressively scan the immediate foliage surrounding the base of my tree, and it did not take long for those familiar, lightning-fast blurry movements to register inside my sensory department once again.
"One... two... three... four..." I softly whispered into the quiet air, tracking each shadowy distortion with absolute precision as I counted them out. There were exactly four of those sneaky little menaces darting through the dense brush, actively shifting positions as they waited for the perfect microsecond to launch an ambush on my party.
