I stepped through the shimmering sapphire curtain of the portal, and the universe immediately pulled a bait and switch on my retinas. In a heartbeat, the wide, eye searing green of the plains was snatched away and replaced by a suffocating expanse of ancient, towering timber. These weren't just trees; they were wooden skyscrapers designed by someone who clearly had a personal vendetta against the concept of sunlight.
The sky was completely swallowed by a canopy of leaves so thick it felt like the forest was actively conspiring to keep the world in the dark. A damp, bone deep chill settled over everything, the kind of cold that lives in places where the sun hasn't visited in a century. Everything was draped in heavy, oppressive shades of grey and deep emerald, making the whole place look like the setting of a horror story where the guy in the mismatched leather dies before the opening credits finish rolling.
[Welcome to the Forest of Deynara. This location represents the primary genuine trial within the Endless Dungeon of Eteria. It is a domain where the fragile are systematically filtered and only the resilient shall advance. Good luck.] The system voice rang through my head with the clinical, bored detachment of an automated emergency broadcast. It was the kind of "good luck" you give to someone you fully expect to find face down in a ditch by morning.
"Well, that doesn't exactly scream 'welcome to the neighborhood,' does it?" I muttered, my voice sounding uncomfortably small against the muffled, heavy silence of the woods. I looked around at the dim light and the massive trees, feeling like a very small, very flammable ant in a very large basement.
"Seriously, 'filtered'? I'm pretty sure that's just a polite system way of saying we're about to be turned into organic fertilizer." I did a slow, cautious spin, squinting into the gloom. All I could see were the massive, gnarled trunks of trees that looked like they were carved out of iron and spite. The pathetic excuse for sunlight barely managed to crawl down to the forest floor, creating shadows that seemed to twitch every time I blinked.
It was just me, my band of beautiful weirdos, and a whole lot of ominous woodland silence that felt like it was waiting for a punchline I definitely wasn't going to like. Unlike the first floor, which was basically a crowded theme park filled with newbies tripping over their own feet, this place was eerily deserted. It felt like someone had forgotten to invite the rest of the server to the party, or more likely, the party had already been eaten.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation. The only sign of actual human life was centered around a singular white stone Monolith that stood out against the gloom like a glowing thumb. There was a small handful of players huddled around it, probably trying to look brave while they picked up quests that would inevitably lead to their untimely demise.
June adjusted her tunic with a sharp, regal snap, looking around the shadowy woods with a gaze that suggested the trees should be apologizing for being in her line of sight.
"The first genuine trial, is it?" she remarked, her posh British accent cutting through the damp air like a diamond blade.
"One can only hope that whatever lurks in this shrubbery is at least somewhat worthy of my magnificent presence. It would be a dreadful bore otherwise." Dimitri, however, was already focused on the logistics of our survival with that relentless, fatherly warmth of his. He looked at the glowing stone as if it were a long lost friend.
"Before we venture into the heart of the mystery, my wonderful companions, we must anchor ourselves to this sacred pillar!" he rumbled, his thick Russian accent making the suggestion sound like a grand vow of brotherhood.
"Let us record our spirits at the Monolith so that we may travel between the worlds with ease. A strong foundation is the key to a glorious future!" We began our slow trek toward the towering white stone, heading toward the only beacon of safety in this giant, wooden basement. Since I had completely missed out on the technical bells and whistles back on the first floor because Dimitri had been busy dragging me around like a sentient piece of luggage, this was my official debut with the Monolith's user interface.
The giant slab of glowing white rock flickered to life as we approached, projecting a holographic screen into the damp, chilly air that looked way too high tech for a place that didn't even have indoor plumbing. The menu was blissfully simple, offering two main flavors of adventure: Teleportation and a Quest List. [Upon your initial entry to a floor, the local Monolith becomes a valid destination. You are now permitted to transit between the Monoliths of discovered floors. Currently accessible destinations: Floor 1 and Floor 2.] The system voice delivered the news with all the soul and enthusiasm of a damp sponge, but the information was pure gold. It was basically a magical fast travel system that saved me from ever having to walk through that endless, soul crushing grassland again. I turned away from the glowing text and looked at my band of beautiful weirdos.
Dimitri was standing there like a mountain of heroic sunshine, while June looked like she was waiting for the Monolith to apologize for making her stand on dirt.
"Alright, since we are all officially checked in," I said, gesturing vaguely at the floating screen.
"What kind of trouble should we sign up for? Does anyone have a preference for which quest we tackle first?" Dimitri beamed at me, his face radiating enough fatherly confidence to make me feel like I'd just won an Olympic medal for standing still.
"Why do you not take the lead and select our path, my wonderful friend?" he rumbled, his thick Russian accent turning the suggestion into a grand, sweeping declaration of faith.
"You possess a sharp and brilliant mind! I have no doubt you will choose the perfect challenge that will allow our spirits to flourish together as one!" I waited for someone to shoot the idea down, half expecting June to make a remark about how her royal intuition was far superior to my own, but the silence was absolute. Not a single person rejected the idea. They all just stood there, looking at me with a level of collective trust that was actually starting to make me sweat.
Apparently, I had just been promoted to the role of "The Guy with the Plan," which was terrifying considering my plans usually consisted of ninety percent luck and ten percent sheer terror.
