I narrowed my eyes, squinting against the glare of the sun until the landscape finally decided to stop playing coy and show me its true, terrifying colors. I had been expecting a bigger crab, sure. Maybe a crab the size of a minivan or a particularly robust dumpster. What I was currently looking at, however, was a geological event with legs.
Just as my brain was beginning to short-circuit from the sheer scale of the "scenic overlook" in front of us, a familiar, translucent blue box flickered into existence right in my line of sight. [Designation: Iron-Ribbed Monarch. Classification: Tier 1 Elite. Current Power Level: 1.] The voice in my head was as cool and professional as a bored librarian, but the words she was reading might as well have been a formal invitation to my own funeral.
I stared at that "Elite" tag and felt a cold shiver do a tap dance down my spine.
"You have got to be kidding me," I muttered, my voice cracking just enough to betray the fact that I was currently reconsidering every life choice that had led me to this specific pile of rocks.
"We aren't just fighting a monster. We're fighting a sovereign nation with its own zip code and a windmill for a crown. Is this a quest or a suicide pact?" Beside me, Dimitri didn't look terrified at all. In fact, he looked like a man who had just been told his favorite grandma was visiting with a fresh tray of cookies. He adjusted his grip on that legendary rotting barrel lid and flashed a smile so bright it could have probably been used to guide ships to safety during a storm.
"It seems we are up against a magnificent force of nature, my brother Arthur!" Dimitri boomed, his thick Russian accent turning the terrifying situation into something that sounded like a heartwarming folk song.
"The universe has blessed us with a challenge that is as grand as the sky itself! To face such a mountain is to know the true depth of our own spirit. We shall not be moved by the stone, for our hearts are made of a fire that no rock can crush!" I looked at him, then back at the hill-sized crustacean that was currently breathing loud enough to cause local weather patterns. I was ninety percent sure his motivational quotes were the only thing keeping the air from tasting like pure, unadulterated dread.
"I love the enthusiasm, Big Sunshine, really I do, but I'd prefer to have a better idea of how many HP bars I'm about to fail at emptying," I said, my fingers twitching toward the grip of the Training Prototype 7.
"System, if you aren't too busy being a harbinger of doom, would you mind showing me the full stats on this... whatever that thing is? I'd like to know exactly how much blue-flavored magic juice I'm going to need to dump into that mountain before it notices I'm even here." ••••• Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.
Name: Iron-Ribbed Monarch Tier: 1 (Elite) Level: 1 Element: Earth Main Stat: Strength Description: The Monarch is a massive, hill-sized evolution of the Bovine Crustacean. Its once-stony shell has expanded into a mountainous "Iron-Ribbed" ridge of dark, mineral-rich ore. Thick moss and patches of long grass grow across its broad back, often concealing its true form until it moves. Its six legs are now like pillars of reinforced chitin, and its bovine horns have branched into jagged, metallic crowns.
Stats: Physical Defense: Heavy (Reinforced iron-infused carapace). Magic Defense: Medium (Mossy coating acts as a natural arcane insulator). Abilities: Monarch's Decree (Roar): The creature lets out a deep, resonant low that vibrates the very air. This forces all nearby enemies to target the Monarch, while briefly reducing their attack power. Mountain Tumble: The Monarch shifts its massive weight to perform a slow but devastating roll.
Anything caught in its path is flattened by its immense bulk and suffers heavy physical damage. Seismic Pulse: By slamming its pillar-like legs in unison, it sends a massive ripple through the ground. This deals Earth damage and creates difficult terrain (mud and cracked rock) in a wide radius. Verdant Regrowth: Drawing nutrients from the earth, the moss on its back glows. It slowly regenerates health over time and cleanses minor status ailments.
Resistances & Weaknesses: Resistant To: Lightning (Its massive, grounded body safely dissipates electrical charges). Weaknesses: Ice: Extreme cold makes its iron-ribbed shell brittle, making it easier to crack with physical attacks. Fire: Intense heat scorches the protective moss and grass, removing its magic defense and causing it to panic.
••••• I stared at the floating wall of text, my eyes skimming over phrases like "mountainous ridge" and "pillar-like legs" while my brain tried to find a graceful way to exit stage left. The list of abilities read less like a stat sheet and more like a detailed itinerary for a natural disaster.
"Is the System seriously trying to tell me that this walking tectonic plate is Level 1?" I asked, gesturing wildly at the hill that was currently wearing a windmill as a fashion statement.
"Does the ranking committee have a sense of humor, or do they just hate us? Calling this thing Level 1 is like calling a hurricane a light breeze." [Note: While Common and Elite entities may share a numerical level on their respective floors, their attributes and innate capabilities differ significantly. A single Elite specimen possesses power far exceeding that of a synchronized group of Common entities at an equivalent level.] I rolled my eyes so hard I nearly saw my own brain.
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. Quality over quantity. I was just being a smart-ass, System. You can take a break from the 'actually' routine and just chill for a second." I cleared my throat, trying to regain some semblance of dignity as I turned my attention back to the massive, moss-covered problem. It was unnervingly still, a silent monument of iron-infused beef and grass that seemed content to let the wind whistle through its "hat" for the time being.
"It is just sitting there," I whispered, my grip tightening on the Training Prototype 7.
"Still as a statue. Maybe it is waiting for us to knock? Or perhaps it is just waiting for us to get close enough to turn us into human pancakes without having to stand up." Dimitri didn't look bothered. He adjusted his grip on his notched blade, his face radiant with a level of wholesome determination that honestly felt like it could heal physical wounds.
"If the mountain will not come to the brothers, then the brothers must provide a gentle wake-up call to the mountain!" Dimitri boomed, his thick Russian accent turning the looming threat into a minor inconvenience.
"Do not worry, Arthur! A true friend is the shield that stands before the storm. You must stay behind my back, where the light is brightest! I shall go forth to poke this slumbering giant and invite it to dance in the sun!"
