I stood there for a moment, flexing my fingers and feeling like a brand new man, or at least a version of myself that had been through a light car wash and a battery jump-start. I looked up at the sky, or whatever passed for a ceiling in this cosmic madness, and cleared my throat.
"Alright, Ms. Digital Overlord," I announced to the general vicinity.
"I think I'm officially ready to go see the big, scary dungeon now. Let's see if I can find some loot before I find my untimely demise." Almost instantly, a shimmering thread of pure spun gold materialized in the air right before my eyes. It pulsed with a gentle light, looking like a very expensive piece of dental floss leading me toward my destiny. [Pathfinding initialized. Please proceed along the highlighted trajectory to reach the primary dungeon threshold.] Her voice was as smooth and formal as a high-end AI assistant who was definitely judging my life choices. I started walking, keeping my eyes glued to the golden string as I navigated the absolute dumpster fire that was the new player arrival zone. I had to dodge a guy who was still curled in a ball of existential dread and shimmy past a group of adrenaline junkies who were currently high-fiving each other so hard I thought they might break their wrists.
The golden thread didn't care about the chaos; it just bobbed along, cutting through the smell of horse manure and magic like it had a dinner reservation it couldn't miss. As I followed the trail, the architecture started to get a lot more intimidating. The buildings loomed larger, the stone looked older, and the general vibe shifted from "chaotic marketplace" to "impending doom." Eventually, the thread led me straight to what I thought was going to be a massive stone gate.
Calling it a gate was like calling a hurricane a light breeze. It was a gargantuan, swirling vortex of sapphire energy, a spinning blue portal that looked like a giant celestial washing machine set to the "extradimensional" cycle. The air around it hummed with a low, vibrating frequency that made my teeth ache and the hair on my arms stand up in a standing ovation. Scattered around the edges of this glowing maw were groups of players.
Some were leaning against the stone walls with the kind of casual boredom you usually see at a bus stop, while others were frantically checking their gear and staring at the blue whirlpool like they were mentally preparing for a bungee jump into a volcano. It was the ultimate "Do Not Enter" sign that everyone was currently lining up to enter, and I was next in line.
I came to a halt right in front of the swirling blue abyss, my toes practically hanging over the edge of what I was reasonably certain was the world's most beautiful death trap. Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit. The portal was humming, a deep, rhythmic thrum that felt like it was trying to vibrate my skeleton right out of my skin.
"Man, I am really speedrunning this whole dungeon hero business, aren't I?" I muttered, my voice sounding suspiciously small against the roar of the magic vortex.
"Am I actually this eager to punch my own ticket? I mean, I knew I wasn't doing much with my life back in my room, but I never realized I hated being a shut in enough to sprint toward a giant glowing blender." The bravado I'd been wearing like a cheap suit started to fray at the edges. A cold, slimy bit of hesitation crawled up my spine, settling right between my shoulder blades.
My hand, the one currently gripping a Training Prototype revolver that looked more like a glorified stapler than a weapon, started to do a little nervous jig. Maybe all that internal monologue about being the chosen one was just me whistling past the graveyard. At the end of the day, I was still just Arthur Gray, a guy whose greatest achievement to date was probably achieving a high score in a game no one else plays. What was I doing here? I was a certified nobody. A professional at being mediocre.
I could see the highlight reel of my future playing out in the ripples of the portal energy. I'd take two steps inside, get eaten alive by a giant radioactive rat, and that would be that. Or, even worse, I'd survive just long enough to realize I'm totally useless, eventually crawling back here to spend the rest of my days shaking a tin cup for copper coins in the city square. Just another level one loser who couldn't cut it in the big leagues. I was not cut out for this. Not a good for nothing like me.
I hauled off and slapped myself across the face with such enthusiastic violence that a group of nearby players actually stopped checking their gear to stare at me with genuine concern. My cheek was stinging like I'd just been kissed by a hot waffle iron, but the physical shock did the trick. It managed to kick my spiraling existential crisis right out of the driver's seat.
"This is it, Arthur," I declared to the portal, trying to sound like a protagonist in a cinematic trailer rather than a guy who still lived with his parents.
"This is the big reset button. The ultimate do over. I am going to live this second life to the absolute fullest, or at least die trying in a way that looks moderately cool on a tombstone." I took a breath so deep I'm pretty sure I deprived the immediate area of oxygen for a solid three seconds. Then, without letting my brain have another chance to file a formal protest, I marched straight into the blue swirling abyss. Crossing the threshold felt like being pulled through a straw made of cold electricity.
For a heartbeat, the world was nothing but sapphire light and a sound like a thousand wind chimes exploding at once. Then, the city of Eteria just deleted itself from behind me. The smell of old stone and horse manure vanished, replaced instantly by the crisp, sharp scent of wild clover and open air. I blinked, my eyes adjusting to a scenery change so abrupt it gave me a mild case of mental whiplash. I wasn't in a dark, damp cave or a monster infested basement.
Instead, I was standing in the middle of a massive, rolling plane that stretched out until the grass met the horizon. It was a sea of vibrant green, swaying under a breeze so calming and gentle that I almost forgot I was here to fight for my life. The sky above was an impossibly clear shade of blue, looking like a high definition screensaver come to life. It was peaceful. It was beautiful. It was exactly the kind of place where you'd expect to find a picnic, not a bloodbath.
Then, that familiar, crisp female voice echoed through the private theater of my mind, sounding remarkably proud of the view she'd just provided. [Welcome to the Plains of Cladea. This is the foundational landscape where all legendary sagas find their origin.] I gripped my training revolver, my boots sinking into the soft earth.
"Legendary sagas, huh?" I whispered, looking around for anything that looked like it wanted to bite me.
"Let's hope my saga lasts longer than the first chapter."
