I stared at the glowing blue text floating in front of me, blinking several times just to make sure my eyes weren't malfunctioning. I read the words again, but they didn't get any less insane.
"I'm sorry, I think there is a glitch in the Matrix," I said, pointing a trembling finger at the description.
"What in the name of all that is holy is a Bovine Crustacean? Is that a typo? Did someone spill soup on the source code?" Dimitri didn't even flinch. He just stood there looking like a mountain that had recently discovered yoga, radiating a level of calm that was frankly insulting given the circumstances.
"Ah, I have heard the travelers speak of these curious beings!" he rumbled, his voice sounding like a waterfall made of honey and gravel.
"It is whispered that they are a magnificent hybrid, a fusion of the sturdy, milk-giving cow and the armored, clawed crab. Nature is a beautiful tapestry of surprises, is it not?" I just stood there with my jaw hanging open, trying to process the mental image of a crab with udders or a cow that could scuttle sideways. The sheer biological audacity of it made my head hurt.
"What the hell did I just hear?" I asked the universe at large.
"That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my entire life. Who thought that was a good idea? Was the creator of this world just bored and looking at a surf and turf menu? It's not a monster; it's a culinary disaster waiting to happen." Dimitri laughed, a deep, booming sound that probably knocked a few birds out of the sky nearby. He reached out and patted my shoulder, nearly driving me six inches into the dirt like a human tent stake.
"Do not let the strangeness of the foe dampen the fire in your heart, my small friend!" he declared, looking like he was ready to pose for a marble statue.
"The farmer Elias Thorne is in great distress, and his fields cry out for the touch of justice. We must journey to the Oakhaven Meadows at once to sweep away this stony tide. Come, let us walk toward the horizon of our destiny! Follow me, for the path to greatness is paved with the stones we overcome." He turned his massive Adidas-clad frame and began to march away with the confidence of a man who had never known the touch of a "Game Over" screen.
"Hey! Wait a minute, Big Sunshine!" I shouted after him, scrambling to keep up with his four foot long strides.
"I don't remember signing the dotted line on this one! I haven't officially agreed to go fight Cow-Crabs for a guy named Elias!" Dimitri stopped dead in his tracks and slapped his massive palms together with a sound like two slabs of marble colliding. The impact sent a small shockwave through the air and caused a few nearby players to jump nearly out of their boots.
He looked at me with a face full of such genuine, wide eyed regret that I actually felt bad for being the one who was currently being kidnapped into a crab cow war.
"A thousand apologies, my companion in arms!" he boomed, his Russian accent vibrating through the soles of my shoes.
"In my haste to reach the fields of glory, I have neglected the sacred bond of the brotherhood. The bridge between two souls must be built with the stones of formality. Please, accept this token of our shared future." Suddenly, a transparent window flickered into existence right in front of my nose, pulsing with a soft, inviting light. [Notification: Player Dimitri has submitted a formal request to establish a cooperative party. Do you wish to bind your fate to this fellowship?] Dimitri just stood there, towering over me like a friendly skyscraper, his face fixed in a grin so bright I was worried I might get a sunburn just by looking at him. He didn't say a word; he just projected this overwhelming aura of weaponized kindness that made me feel like kicking a puppy if I even thought about saying no.
I don't know if he was using some kind of high level psychological passive skill or if I was just hypnotized by the sheer majestic sheen of his tracksuit, but my hand moved entirely on its own. Before my brain could file a formal injunction, my finger twitched and tapped the "Accept" button. [Alliance confirmed. Party 'Fellowship of the Sun' has been successfully registered. Party size: 2/5.]"Wait, did I just do that?" I muttered, staring at the notification as it dissolved into digital dust.
"Did I really just join a party named after a motivational poster? I'm pretty sure I didn't even have a vote on the name. Is there a way to appeal this? Is there a manager I can speak to about my own life choices?" Dimitri didn't give me a chance to find the exit strategy. He beamed even wider, looking like he was about to burst into song.
"Excellent! The ink is dry upon the scroll of our destiny, Arthur! Now, we do not walk as strangers, but as two halves of a single, invincible heart!" Before I could point out that I'd prefer to keep my heart as a solo act, a fresh shimmering line of gold materialized on the grass. It wasn't just a thread this time; it was a glowing, confident path that cut through the meadow like a royal carpet, pointing us directly toward the coastal pastures of Oakhaven.
"Look, my friend!" Dimitri shouted, pointing a finger the size of a bratwurst toward the horizon.
"The golden road reveals itself to the worthy! Let us march toward the Oakhaven Meadows, for the clover fields are weeping and only we can dry their emerald tears!" I sighed, adjusting the imaginary collar of my beginner rags as I started trudging along behind the tracksuit titan.
"Fine, fine. Let's go save the weeping grass from the armored milk monsters. But if I get pinched by a hoof, I am never letting you live it down." I let out a long, dramatic sigh that probably sounded like a balloon slowly leaking air, and began the long trek behind the Great Slavic Wall. We marched through the endless grasslands, the emerald blades tickling my knees while the sun beat down on us like it was trying to cook me in my own beginner rags.
Dimitri, of course, didn't seem to notice the heat or the distance. He just bobbed along with the rhythmic grace of a giant, happy bouncy castle.
"You know, for a guy who's technically just a level one rookie like the rest of us bottom feeders, you seem weirdly well informed," I remarked, watching the way his tracksuit stripes shimmered in the light.
"You don't have that glazed over, what is a button look that most of the new arrivals are sporting. You actually seem like you know where the bathroom is in this cosmic nightmare. How did you manage that without getting eaten by a stray ladybug?" Dimitri didn't even look back, his voice booming over his shoulder with the resonant clarity of a cathedral bell.
"Ah, my inquisitive friend Arthur! Knowledge is the lantern that illuminates the darkest cave of the soul," he rumbled, the Russian vowels rolling around in his mouth like smooth river stones.
"When I first opened my eyes in the grand capital of Inizio, I did not rush headlong into the fray. I spent my initial days wandering the beautiful streets and talking to everyone I met. I asked questions of the baker, the blacksmith, and the lonely old man on the corner. Because I opened my heart to them, I have made a vast sea of friends who were eager to share the secrets of this world." I stared at the back of his massive, striped head for a moment, my expression a mixture of disbelief and utter lack of shock.
"Why am I not even remotely surprised to hear that?" I muttered to the grass.
"Of course you spent your first few days becoming the unofficial Mayor of Newbie Town. I bet the NPCs probably gave you a key to the city and a standing ovation just for existing. Most people are fighting for their lives, and you're out here collecting LinkedIn connections." Dimitri just chuckled, a sound that felt like a warm hug for my eardrums.
"To speak is a gift, but to listen is a superpower, Arthur! Every person is a book waiting to be read."
"Great," I whispered, checking my pocket dimension for my gun.
"I'm stuck in a buddy cop movie with a guy who's basically a walking, talking Hallmark card."
