Five slowly closed his eyes, letting the soft breeze ruffle his golden hair as if he were posing for the cover of a "Fantasy Princes Monthly" magazine. He looked so serene it was actually kind of annoying. For a second there, I honestly couldn't tell if he was lost in thought or if he was literally having a private heart to heart with the wind. If he starts talking to the grass next, I'm out.
"It is because one of the divine goddesses of Eteria has glimpsed something unique within your soul," Five said, his voice carrying that heavy, regal weight again. He didn't even open his eyes to look at me, which really added to the whole 'I'm more important than you' vibe.
"As for what that quality might be, I cannot say. You will have to pose the question to her yourself, once you have successfully ascended to the very peak of the Endless Dungeon." I rubbed my chin, processing this. A goddess, huh? My brain, which has been thoroughly rotted by years of high-quality animation and questionable light novels, immediately went to the most important question.
"Okay, so follow up question," I started, leaning in with a look of intense, scholarly curiosity.
"Is she, you know, hot? Because let's be honest, Five, having a literal babe waiting for me at the top would be a way better motivator for climbing a death trap dungeon than just finding myself or whatever." I expected him to be offended, or maybe give me another one of those stiff, formal lectures about sacred duties. Instead, Five actually broke character. He let out a genuine, booming laugh that made his fancy noble hat bob up and down.
Five finally stopped laughing and adjusted his flamboyant hat, regaining that posture that screamed "I'm an important NPC and you're just a Level 1 scrub." He cleared his throat, his expression turning serious again as he prepared to deliver the next big quest prompt.
"In any case," Five announced, his voice regaining its polished, noble resonance, "before you may journey onward to the land of Eteria, you must first select the attributes that will define your path within the depths of the dungeon. These choices shall be the foundation of your future destiny." As soon as he finished speaking, the air in front of me shimmered and cracked like a glitching TV screen. Suddenly, a translucent blue interface snapped into existence, hovering right before my eyes.
It was glowing with that classic sci-fi neon hue that usually means I'm about to spend three hours in a character creator menu instead of actually playing the game. [Please select your desired class.] A massive, scrolling list of options appeared, so long it probably could have reached the ground if it weren't floating. I started swiping through them, feeling like I was browsing a very dangerous grocery store.
Each entry came with its own detailed description, breaking down everything from magical capabilities and specialized combat maneuvers to how likely the class was to get me killed. Some were rated for "Beginners" while others looked like they required a PhD in sword-swinging. I scrolled past the "Knight" stuff (too much heavy lifting) and the "Mage" options (too much reading), ignoring the weird niche builds until I finally saw it.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement. My eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. There it was: the Gunner class. In a world of sticks and stones, the guy with the boom-stick is king. To me, it wasn't just another option; it was the absolute peak of all possible career paths. I leaned in closer to the floating blue screen, squinting at the details for the Gunner class.
If I was going to be stuck in a fantasy death-trap, I might as well have something that goes bang. [The Gunner is recognized as one of the most adaptable archetoires available. However, it is also ranked among the most difficult paths to master due to the extreme complexity of its operational requirements.] I read that and felt a little spark of pride. Sure, it sounded like a headache, but "versatile" is just a fancy word for "having a tool to annoy everyone."
[Unlike traditional marksmen, Gunners do not utilize physical ammunition. Instead, they channel raw mana to discharge their armaments. Consequently, precise mana budgeting is essential to this combat style. Their projectiles inflict a hybrid of both magical and physical damage upon impact.] So, I'd be shooting literal magic bullets. That sounded awesome until I realized I'd have to do math mid-fight just to make sure I didn't run out of juice.
It's like trying to stream a movie on a data cap while being chased by a dragon. [The unique Class Skill for this path is Rearm. This is the only class capable of swapping primary and secondary armaments during active combat. Furthermore, weapon specific bonus effects are applied to skills based on the currently equipped gear.] Now that is what I'm talking about. I could be a walking Swiss Army knife of ballistics.
The interface continued to scroll, laying out the fine print like a contract I was definitely going to sign. [While Gunners possess solutions for nearly every conceivable tactical scenario, their specialized tools are highly situational. This leaves the user exceptionally vulnerable if the correct equipment is not deployed for the immediate threat.] It was basically saying I'd be a god as long as I didn't bring a sniper rifle to a knife fight. Typical.
Then I hit the part about the stats, and my brain did a little backflip. [The Gunner class is unique in that its offensive output scales with Strength, Intelligence, and Agility. This class simultaneously employs physical, magical, and velocity based attack types.] So I needed to be buff, smart, and fast? Talk about a high-maintenance build. Most people just pick one and call it a day, but no, the Gunner wants the whole package.
It's the ultimate "try-hard" class, which, considering my history of over-analyzing games until they aren't fun anymore, felt like a personal call-out. I took a long, hard look at the wall of text the system had dumped into my brain. It was basically telling me that being a Gunner was like trying to fly a jet while playing a violin and doing your taxes at the same time. Naturally, my ego decided this was the only logical choice for a guy whose previous peak athletic performance was reaching for the TV remote.
"Alright, I've made my decision," I announced, trying to sound a lot more confident than a man standing in a field in a hoodie has any right to be.
"Sign me up for the Gunner Class. Let's see if I can actually hit the broad side of a barn with magic bullets." [Confirmed. Your transition to the Gunner Class is now complete. Initialization of base combat parameters has finished.] I felt a weird little tingle in my fingers, like I'd just touched a live wire, but I didn't sprout any cool holsters or a cowboy hat. I felt a bit ripped off, honestly. If I'm a Gunner, where is the gear?
Before I could lodge a formal complaint with Five about the lack of free loot, the blue screen flickered and updated with a warning that was significantly more ominous than the last one. [Please proceed to select your initial skill. You are cautioned that this first selection is a literal pivot between survival and demise. A staggering percentage of participants have met an early end simply because their opening skill was ill-suited for the initial trials.] Well, that's a great way to give a guy performance anxiety. No pressure, right? It was basically telling me that if I picked the "Shiny Boot Polish" skill instead of something useful, I'd be monster snacks within the hour. I cracked my knuckles and gave the floating blue box a determined smirk.
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. Death is around every corner, very spooky. I've played enough RPGs to know how this dance goes. Stop with the gloom and doom and show me the goods. Give me the list."
