Elios poured over the ancient documents sprawled across his makeshift workspace. They had sat untouched for years, buried in an old filing cabinet. His forced relocation had been a stroke of luck… or maybe something else entirely. These papers were important. He could feel it, from the first moment he touched them. These were the keys to unlocking the secrets the sands of time had tried to hide for eternity. Mordak had misinterpreted the initial translation, he knew that from the beginning.
Mordak and his rash actions let the prophesied child slip through his fingers. If he had only given me the time, I would have figured it out, I know it, he thought staring at the words. He had the translation cracked, but what did it mean? He whispered the prophecy to himself, hoping that hearing the words would spark something, anything. In shadows of a forgotten time, Where realm-walls crumble, boundaries unwind, Ancient powers stirring, long concealed, A bloodline's destiny now revealed.
With eyes bluer than the deepest sea, It's all there, locked in the universal memory. A child born of many, which is really only one, Will piece back what was broken, a new era will have begun. Transcending space, defying years, Answering destiny's rising fears. Now that the child was dead, was any of it even relevant? he asked himself. He stared off into the distance mulling the words over in his head. I need to go back to the site, he thought. There has to be something there that we missed the first time.
The sound of voices approaching ripped him from his thoughts. He quickly shoved the papers back in the folder and quickly put them in the drawer.
"Good game, Jethro!" Mordak said, as the two men entered the room.
"Yeah, thanks for taking me again… golfing is something I can never do too often. Good game? What do you mean? I shot a twelve over par." He laughed.
"I think I ended up in the water hazard more than I ended up on the green."
"Exactly!" Mordak laughed loudly, slapping Hardscrabble on the back.
"That part come in yet, Elios?" Hardscrabble asked as he walked past Elios' desk.
"Not that I am aware of, sir." Elios replied not looking up from the report that lay in front of him.
"Jethro, call that company and find out where the hell that part is." Mordak said, "It should have been here by now, I need that machine up and running the minute Wentworth gets the… eh… merchandise ready for transport." The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
"Get right on it boss." Hardscrabble replied.
"We still on for drinks later?" He asked, smirking smugly at Elios.
"Of course!" Mordak replied, smiling brightly.
"I'm looking forward to meeting your wife, I heard she is quite the little lady."
"She's looking forward to it too," Hardscrabble said emphatically.
"Well, I'll leave it to your capable hands Jethro." Mordak said, as he turned to leave.
"See you at seven!" He called out over his shoulder. Hardscrabble plopped down onto Elios' desk.
"That report finished?" he asked, looking down at Elios' work.
"Just about, sir," Elios said, doing all he could do not to stab his boss with the pen in his hand.
"Bring it in when it's done," Hardscrabble said, getting up and heading to his office door. He looked at the stack of packages and unopened mail.
"When you're done, do something about this mess. Will you?" he asked flatly.
"What would you like me to do with it, sir?" Elios asked through gritted teeth.
"Shove it up your ass for all I care. Move it to the storeroom or something, I'll get to it eventually," he said casually.
"But Sir, don't you think you should maybe go through it? There might be something important in there that requires your time and attention." Elios said, loud enough to be heard across the room while casting him a look of contempt.
"Who's in charge? Me or you?" Hardscrabble asked, turning a warning glare at Elios.
"You are, sir." Elios replied.
"What did I, your superior, tell you to do?" Hardscrabble asked, annoyed.
"Do I have to write you up again for insubordination?"
"I will place the packages in the storeroom, per your request," he replied loudly before adding, "sir."
"Just do what you are told, and everything will be fine, when the hell are you going to get that through that thick skull or yours?" he asked.
"Never mind, don't bother to answer that, I already know the answer, the second day of never." He sighed, "You know I can hear you just fine, there is no need to shout," he said, walking into his office and shutting the door. Elios looked down at the report on his desk, a small smile forming on his lips.
"I will get right on that, sir!" he whispered, "you betcha, I will move every little piece of that mess to the storeroom, exactly as ordered to do."
"Elios!" Hardscrabble called from his office. Elios got up, report in hand, he had finished it hours ago, but Hardscrabble didn't need to know that. He walked to Hardscrabble's door and knocked softly.
"Yes, sir," he said, as Hardscrabble waved him in.
"Call that manufacturer and find out about that missing piece will ya?" he said as he used an imaginary golf club to practice his golf swing.
"Sure thing, I'll get right on that, sir," he began.
"Would you like me to do that before or after I move the packages, sir?" he asked, placing the report on Hardscrabble's desk.
"Don't care, just get it done," Hardscrabble replied, taking another imaginary swing at the non-existent golf ball.
"Shut the door on your way out, will ya?"
"Yes, sir," Elios replied as he turned for the door.
"Are you sure you don't want to look through the mail before I move it, sir?" he called out over his shoulder as he turned the door handle and opened the door.
"For the last flipping time Elios! Put those stupid packages and mail in the storeroom and get them away from my door!" he yelled loudly, making two lab workers turn to see what was going on.
"Yes, sir!" he exclaimed.
"I will make sure I put the packages in the storeroom just like you asked," he said loudly enough to be certain the two co-workers heard the exchange, then shut the door with a soft click.
