Interlude From The Rectified Annals of the Twelvefold Realm, Book Thirty-Seven: On the Ending of Canglan and the Coming of Silver Compiled by the Office of Imperial Histories beneath the Seal of His August Majesty, Yin Shouheng, Emperor of the Twelve Folds, Keeper of Measures and Guardian Beneath the Silver Boughs. There are those who name it the Silver War, as common tongues will shorten even the greatest movements of Heaven into words fit for roadside telling.

In the southern kingdoms, old soldiers once called it the Grain Fire War, for the granaries burned red through three seasons and the smoke of them crossed the rivers before the armies did. The remaining servants of fallen Canglan named it treason, as though loyalty remained a virtue when offered to a hand already closed around the throat. The proper name is the Silver Rectification.

Before His Majesty raised the first banner in the Vale, the Twelve Folds lay beneath the shadow of House Lan, whose ancestors had once been worthy of the mandate they carried. In those early days, the Canglan sovereigns bound river to road, court to sect, and kingdom to kingdom through marriage, oath, and the keeping of ancient pacts. Their barges passed beneath moonlit bridges. Their blue-glass halls were praised in every province. Poets compared the imperial court to a lotus floating untouched above dark water.

In the final centuries, the lotus had grown fat upon the mire. The princes of House Lan measured counties by the number of servants they could surrender. Their ministers recorded fields that had failed three harvests as fertile, mines that had swallowed whole families as productive, and villages emptied by levy as peaceful. Grain moved towards the capital while children boiled bark.

Spirit stones rose from the western shafts darkened by blood and were set into palace lamps so that noble feasts might continue after midnight. Men were bound to roads until their backs broke beneath imperial stone. Women were taken against debt and entered into household registers beside horses, gardens, and lacquered screens. Still the court wrote of harmony. Still the drums sounded at the changing of the moon. Still the Lan sovereign sat beneath the Crown of Twelve Waters and was told that the realm prospered.

It is written that Emperor Yin Shouheng, then only Commissioner of Measures in the Silver Vale, received a grain report from the lower counties in the forty-second year of the final Canglan reign. The report claimed a surplus of nine hundred thousand measures. His Majesty read the tally once and ordered the storehouses opened. There was enough grain for eleven days. He did not weep. Tears do not fill bowls. He did not rage. Rage does not mend canals. He took the ledgers into his own hands and began to count.

He counted the villages taxed after their wells ran dry. He counted the labourers sent north who did not return. He counted the children entered twice in census rolls so that officials might claim rations for mouths already buried. He counted the dead miners whose names remained beside quotas they would never fulfil. He counted the soldiers issued half-rations, the roads left unguarded, the sect levies unpaid, the river gates failing while Lan princes commissioned new pleasure barges from blue cedar.

When he had finished counting, he knew the measure of the dynasty. It was hollow. The first refusal came in the Vale of Three Reeds, where a grain steward named Lu closed the southern storehouses against the command of a Lan governor and distributed their contents among six starving villages. The governor sent twenty soldiers to take his head. Seventeen joined him. Two fled. One returned to the governor carrying the broken seal of House Lan. In the western mines, debt registers were burned.

He travelled without jade carriage or imperial escort, carrying no crown, only the silver tally of his office and the authority granted by the truth laid bare before him. County clerks came first, then grain wardens, road captains, village elders, minor sect cultivators, physicians, ferrymasters, disgraced officers, and soldiers whose commanders had eaten while they starved. Thus silver entered the war. The rebel banners of those first months were many. Some bore grain stalks.

Some bore river reeds, broken chains, open hands, iron bells, or the names of villages later lost to flame. By the first winter, they had become silver beneath His Majesty's command, for scattered courage is easily crushed, but courage given order may break a dynasty. House Lan sent three armies into the Vale. The first found the roads empty and the granaries bare. The second found every bridge behind it broken. The third reached the silver trees and did not return.

The court called His Majesty a clerk, a thief, a low-born tyrant who mistook account books for the Mandate of Heaven. The war did not pass through a single turning of the year. It made ten years into four vast seasons. Spring belonged to the uprising. Rebellion spread first through the Silver Vale, then along the grain roads and river crossings, rising wherever the old dynasty had mistaken suffering for obedience. New banners appeared faster than House Lan could tear them down. Villages opened their storehouses.

County militias turned their coats. Minor sects withdrew their tribute and sent disciples to guard the roads instead. Every victory planted another refusal, and every execution scattered seeds into neighbouring soil. Summer came with the armies. For four years, the Twelve Folds burned beneath them. Lan hosts marched under blue standards, silver forces answered across roads already stripped bare, and whole provinces changed hands more than once. Granaries became fortresses. Canals became graves.

Fields were harvested by whichever army arrived first, then trampled by the one that followed. The great houses chose their sides, abandoned them, and chose again. The Crimson border bled. The northern passes closed. Smoke stood above the Moonlit River until the sun rose red through it. Autumn began when the harvest failed. Not the harvest of grain, though much of that had already been lost, but the harvest of allegiance upon which Canglan had always depended. The western foundries ceased sending steel.

The northern garrisons declared for His Majesty. The river locks closed against imperial barges, and the old capital began to consume the wealth gathered across generations. Jade was traded for rice. Silk screens were burned for heat. Lan princes who had once measured their journeys by musicians and servants began counting the remaining horses in their courtyards. Winter came last and remained for two years. The roads into the capital were cut one by one. The outer estates emptied.

The blue-glass palaces stood bright above streets where the dead were removed before dawn so that court processions would not be troubled by the sight. House Lan still held banquets beneath painted ceilings. Its ministers still recorded victories. Its final sovereign still sat beneath the Crown of Twelve Waters while the kingdom beyond the walls passed entirely from his hands. When the last winter broke, the outer gates were opened from within. House Lan had ruled the Twelve Folds for centuries.

It took ten years to bring it down. The final sovereign of Canglan was brought beneath the Hall of Twelve Waters, where Emperor Yin Shouheng stood before the throne he had not yet claimed. No complete record of their exchange remains in the public archives. It is written only that the Lan sovereign asked whether the blood of emperors meant nothing. His Majesty answered that blood had been weighed. It had been found wanting. Thus ended Canglan. Thus began Silver.

In the years that followed, the hereditary labour bonds were broken, private clan armies were reduced, spirit-stone weights were made equal across the Twelve Folds, and sects were brought beneath common law. Roads were rebuilt. Granaries were counted. Punishments were written. Titles became duties rather than ornaments, and the realm, long bent beneath the appetites of old blood, was returned to proper measure. Those who survived the war sometimes claimed that many hands raised the first silver banners.

It is also true that a thousand hands grasping in different directions cannot lift the world.
