The next morning, Liu Yinhua wakes tired. She had slept, and she had washed the dust from her hair, scrubbed dirt from her cheek, eaten enough that Wu Cailan had looked at her bowl and raised her eyebrows, and spent nearly half an hour moving qi through her limbs until the worst of the training ache had flushed out. Her arms no longer feel like wet rope, and her legs no longer protest each time she asks them to bend.

The bruise at her hip has shifted from sharp into a deep, dull ache, and the scrape on her elbow has sealed over into tender pink. When she breathes, her ribs no longer feel as if they've been pummelled. Still, she wakes tired. There is a tight humming beneath her skin, as if every part of her body is crowded against an invisible edge and has begun to grow impatient with waiting. Her muscles feel too present. Her tendons pull with an awareness she does not like.

Even her fingers seem more awake than fingers have any right to be, curling against the bedding before she has decided to move them. Liu Yinhua lies very still and stares up at the ceiling. Wood Body, the early stage at least, is almost done with her. The thought is frightening enough that she wants to sit up. The movement is frightening enough that she does not. Instead, she breathes carefully, once, twice, then pushes herself upright.

Her palms press into the bedding, and strength moves through shoulder, wrist, and finger as one connected line. Her feet touch the floor, and the boards seem clearer beneath her soles than they had the night before. Not more real, because that would be foolish. The floor has always been real. Liu Yinhua has simply not always been able to feel so much of it at once. Liu Yinhua dresses slowly.

She has no morning physical cultivation today, which is good, because she suspects Elder Huan would take one look at her and decide the edge she is near would be improved by falling on it, repeatedly. She eats breakfast with too much attention on her own hands. Rice, pickled greens, bean curd, steamed buns. Her hunger has not vanished, but it has changed. It is deeper than her stomach. When she swallows, she feels warmth move down into her body and vanish as if dropped into dry earth.

Tang Mingxia notices before the meal is done, but she does not make a scene of it. She only studies Liu Yinhua over the rim of her cup, attention moving from Liu Yinhua's shoulders to her breathing, then to the way Liu Yinhua's fingers curl and uncurl once against her knee. By the time they leave the dining hall, the decision has already been made. The spiritual threshold will wait, for a time. The physical one will not. Tang Mingxia says this with the calm certainty of someone explaining the weather.

Liu Yinhua tries to feel irritated by that and mostly feels relieved. She has been thinking of the Wood Middle breakthrough as something approaching from a distance. Instead, it has woken in her body overnight and begun knocking from the inside. They gather what Tang Mingxia decides is necessary: water, towels, a clean outer robe, two red qi stones from her monthly allotment that Liu Yinhua winces to part with even temporarily, a small jar of salve, and food. More food than Liu Yinhua expects.

Tang Mingxia adds another packet of buns without looking at her, but Liu Yinhua does not argue. She leads Tang Mingxia away from the usual paths. This is, in hindsight, the first difficult part. The guilt arrives late, but when it comes, it comes with teeth. Tang Mingxia has helped her with cultivation, with the sect, with things Liu Yinhua did not know how to ask properly.

Tang Mingxia has corrected her, warned her, fed her information like bitter medicine, and somehow made space around Liu Yinhua without making it feel like charity. And Liu Yinhua has had this. The chamber had come with Lièjìng's sharp little teeth and demands for water, with heat that scraped the throat if she grew greedy, with an old spirit's tolerance rather than welcome. But still. A qi-rich place. A hidden place. A place thick with dry sun warmth and mineral power. A place she had kept.

Survival had taught her that secrets were safer held in the mouth than placed in another person's hands. But the sect is slowly creepng in a new lesson— she is not entirely on her own. When the passage opens into the outer chamber, Tang Mingxia stops. For once, truly stops. The cavern is not large enough to be grand, but it is old enough to make size feel irrelevant. Pale stone curves upward in dry ribs, veined with gold, rust, and white mineral threads. Heat sits in the air without smoke.

The little runnels of water along the back wall shine too bright where they catch the reflected light. Sun qi clings to the stone in layers, not blazing, not open like noon in the sky, but gathered and concentrated, as if the mountain has been holding its breath around a buried ember for a very long time. Tang Mingxia's eyes widen. On anyone else it would be nothing. On Tang Mingxia, it is almost a shout.

"This is where you have been cultivating," she says. Liu Yinhua folds her hands in front of her sleeves.

"Sometimes." Tang Mingxia looks at her. Liu Yinhua's dignity, already tired, begins to fray.

"It is not entirely mine," she says.

"There is a spirit. Or a small aspect of a great one. It allows me to use this outer chamber because I bring water."

"A spirit," Tang Mingxia repeats. The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"A rude one."

"That does not narrow it as much as you think." Liu Yinhua's mouth curves. It fades quickly. Tang Mingxia steps further into the chamber, slow now, no longer startled but cautious. She does not touch the walls at first. She lets her hand hover near the stone, feeling the heat and qi without taking it in. Her expression settles into concentration, but not before Liu Yinhua catches the last edge of wonder there.

"You should have told me," Tang Mingxia says.

"I know." Tang Mingxia turns back. Liu Yinhua looks down at the floor. The stone is warm beneath her shoes.

"I know," she says again, quieter.

"I was afraid that if I told anyone, I would lose it." Tang Mingxia is silent for long enough that Liu Yinhua's throat tightens. Then she says, "That's not a foolish fear." Liu Yinhua looks up. Tang Mingxia's face remains composed, but not cold.

"They are only not the only considerations." That is such a Tang Mingxia answer that Liu Yinhua almost laughs.

"I am telling you now," Liu Yinhua says.

"Yes." Tang Mingxia looks back at the chamber, then at the supplies in her own hands.

"And now I am going to make use of it." She says it so practically that the guilt cannot find anywhere dramatic to sit. It remains anyway, but smaller. They set the supplies near the flattest stone. Tang Mingxia examines the chamber with increasing seriousness, asks careful questions about Lièjìng, the water, the heat, the times Liu Yinhua has cultivated here, and the moments when the qi has caught too sharply in her wrist or throat. Liu Yinhua answers what she can.

She leaves out the worst of Lièjìng's insults because Tang Mingxia does not need to know that a child-shaped sun spirit once looked at Liu Yinhua and called her filthy with the calmness of someone identifying weather. Also because Tang Mingxia might try to argue with him. The thought is absurd enough to steady her. Tang Mingxia decides the chamber will do. More than do, though she does not say that in so many words.

The sun qi is too sharp for careless spiritual advancement, but for a Wood Body breakthrough it may help if Liu Yinhua does not reach for more than she can layer. That becomes the important word. Early Wood has strengthened her in pieces: breath, recovery, tendon, balance, muscle. Middle Wood requires connection. Qi must not only move through the obvious meridians and gather in the familiar places. It must settle into the whole body, slowly enough that flesh accepts it and wound around her bones.

Too much and it will scorch through the routes she already has. Too little and the breakthrough will not take properly. Unevenly, and the weak places will remain weak. A spiritual breakthrough can be approached through the dantian. This is more tedious. Liu Yinhua draws qi from her lower dantian and sinks it downward, not in a bright line, not in a rush, but in a slow seep through hip, thigh, knee, calf, ankle, sole. She has circulated qi through her leg before. She has opened a route there.

She knows the feel of it. Or she thought she did. This is different. The qi must not pass through the flesh like a traveller through a room. It must be pressed into it. A thin layer, then another, then another, until muscle and tendon hold the warmth instead of merely letting it pass. The sole of Liu Yinhua's left foot cramps first, and then her calf. Then a small muscle along her hip she had not known existed begins to ache with such a fierce burn that she loses concentration and has to begin again.

The chamber heat gathers around them. It dries sweat before it can cool properly. It warms the stone beneath Liu Yinhua until she feels as if she is sitting on the back of some great sleeping animal. Sun qi presses at the edge of her circulation, bright and dry and tempting. She does not take it. Not at first. Tang Mingxia is watching, and more importantly, Liu Yinhua has learned enough not to grab simply because something powerful is near. The morning lengthens. Her legs come first, because they must.

Feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs. Each side. Each layer. Back down again when something feels uneven. The qi in her left leg wants to move more readily where the meridian has been opened. The right resists in smaller, meaner ways. Her hip holds old tension from falls and missteps. Her knees are stubborn. The soles of her feet burn and then cool and then burn again. After legs, hands. She had not expected hands to be worse. Hands are delicate. Treacherous.

Full of small bones, tendons, joints, little routes where qi seems to snag just because it can. Her fingers twitch in her lap. Wait, breathe, layer warmth around it, not into the blockage, not against it. Let the flesh around the narrow place strengthen instead of treating the narrow place like an enemy to be beaten. A dull ache spreads through her wrist, then eases into heat. Her arms follow. Elbows, shoulders, the long sore lines where Xie Lianqiu's archery practice has made itself known.

Her back is a misery of little complaints. Her ribs do not like being asked to receive qi between each breath. Her throat feels too narrow. Her jaw clenches, and she forgets the world around her. At some point, Liu Yinhua stops knowing whether her eyes are open. The chamber is light through her eyelids. Red-gold and white. Heat gathers at the edges of her senses and folds inward each time she draws qi through another part of herself. Scalp. Ears. Teeth. The thin skin at the inside of her elbows.

The arches of her feet. The small muscles between the ribs. The line of her spine, bead by bead by bead, until her whole back feels strung with warm thread. This is not the sort of cultivation songs are written about. There is no graceful flash of insight. No immortal vision. No sudden understanding of heaven and earth.

There is only Liu Yinhua, sweating through a clean inner robe, trying to lay qi through the muscles of her left shoulder for the fourth time because the second layer sat unevenly, and Tang Mingxia telling her she is not dying when Liu Yinhua is fairly certain the shoulder has made a compelling argument to the contrary. By afternoon, shame leaves. That is the strange mercy of the work. Her body does not care where it was born. Her tendons do not ask what contracts once held her name.

Her bones do not flinch from qi because Madam Xue once owned the food that built them. Flesh is stupid in some ways, blessedly stupid. Give it breath, food, heat, work, and qi, and it answers as well as it can. The thought nearly breaks her concentration. Liu Yinhua catches it, breathes through it, and keeps layering. The sun qi enters by accident. Or not accident. She is no longer certain.

It begins as a warmth caught in the third pass through her sternum, a dry gold thread that should have remained outside her circulation. She feels it and almost pulls away. Tang Mingxia's breath changes, just slightly, but she does not tell Liu Yinhua to stop. So Liu Yinhua waits. The thread does not surge. It does not burn through her. It does not flare into the Ninefold Shadow of the Purifying Sun or gather into Burning Shadow. It is smaller than that. Quieter. A grain of noon caught under bark.

A dry brightness settling where qi and flesh meet. Wood grows under sun. Wood also burns under sun. Both things are true. Liu Yinhua lets the thread remain. Layer by layer, it thins, spreads, and disappears so completely into the work that she cannot say where it has gone. Not a new meridian. Not a new art. Not power she can name. Only warmth left behind in the places she has strengthened, faint as sunlight caught in closed eyes. The last part is the whole body.

Liu Yinhua has been dreading it since the first explanation and not nearly enough. Individual limbs are one kind of difficult. Joining them is another. The qi must not sit in pieces. It has to move through all of her and remain all of her. Feet to spine. Spine to shoulders. Shoulders to fingers. Breath through ribs. Dantian warm and heavy below. Skin not separate from muscle. Muscle not separate from tendon. Tendon not separate from bone.

By the fourth layer, evening has begun to creep into the chamber, though the heat remains. The air has changed. Liu Yinhua can smell stone, sweat, mineral water, and the faint sweetness of the food Tang Mingxia has forbidden her to eat yet. Her stomach is a hollow, furious thing. Her head aches. Her body is no longer a body so much as a long list of places that have opinions about qi. She gathers them anyway.

The qi settles through her feet, rises through her legs, catches at the hips and is eased through, moves through belly and back and ribs, down arms, into hands, up throat, jaw, scalp. A slow connection. A woven thing. Layer over layer over layer until suddenly there is no place left that has not been touched. For one breath, nothing happens. Then her body answers, and Liu Yinhua's eyes snap open.
