"I am a Sword Saint," Piaro said quietly.
"But I am also a farmer." Piaro closed his eyes. He thought about his time in the dark canyon. He thought about the anger and the sadness. Then he thought about the feeling of the sun on his back while he planted seeds in Reidan. He had two titles. Two lives. But he was fighting like he only had one.
"When I fight you, I only use my sword," Piaro said.
"I swing my blade like a knight. I use only my swordsmanship. I haven't used any of the benefits of being a farmer during the fight." Piaro opened his eyes. They looked deep and calm.
"But I am not just a Sword Saint anymore," Piaro said.
"I am a man of the dirt." Rudra smiled. He leaned on his staff and waited.
"You mixed the divine and the demon," Piaro said, his voice growing stronger.
"You mix the staff and the magic. You use everything you have." Piaro reached out with his left hand. He grabbed the iron hand plow from the dirt. He held his steel sword in his right hand.
"Why should I limit myself?" Piaro asked. A system window flashed in front of Rudra. [Piaro has been enlightened.] [Piaro's stats and skills will significantly rise.] The air around Piaro changed. The sharp, cutting blue aura of his sword subsided. It was replaced by a warm, earthy green glow. The ground beneath his feet trembled. The dirt seemed to hum.
"Here I come, My Lord," Piaro said. He smiled. It was a very calm, very happy smile. Piaro swung his iron hand plow down into the dirt.
"Free Farming," Piaro said.
"1st Style, Sowing." He didn't hit Rudra. He hit the ground. A massive pillar of green energy erupted from the dirt right under Rudra's feet. Rudra's eyes went wide. He barely jumped back in time. The energy pillar blasted into the sky, throwing dirt and rocks everywhere.
"Whoa!" Rudra yelled. Before Rudra could land, Piaro swung his sword through the air.
"Free Farming 2nd Style, Super Growth + Supreme Swordsmanship 4th Style Splitting the Sky." Dozens of tiny, glowing green beads of energy shot from the tip of his sword. They scattered across the field and sank into the dirt all around Rudra. Rudra hit the ground. He raised his staff. Pop. Pop. Pop. The green seeds exploded. They burst out of the dirt like little landmines. Sharp blades of grass made of sword energy shot up and sliced at Rudra's coat. Rudra spun his staff, knocking the energy blades away.
"Nice! That's a neat trick!" Piaro didn't stop. He was moving differently now. He wasn't stiff and didn't stand like a proud knight. He moved like a man harvesting crops. His steps were wide and sweeping. His swings were rhythmic and heavy. Piaro rushed in. He swung his sword horizontally.
"Supreme Swordsmanship 3rd Style + Free Farming 5th Style Harvest" Rudra brought his staff up to block. Clang! The hit was incredibly heavy. Suddenly switching to his Swordsmanship threw him off a little but the sword seemed to carry the weight of the entire field. Rudra's arms shook. He slid backward, his boots digging deep tracks in the dirt. Piaro followed him. He swung his plow and his sword again and again.
"Free Farming 4th Style, Plow the Field + Supreme Swordsmanship 1st Style!" Every time Piaro's plow hit the earth, the dirt rose up to help him. Waves of soil crashed against Rudra's legs, trying to trip him. The wind blew the wheat into Rudra's face, blocking his vision. Using this time, Piaro attacked him with sword energy If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. Rudra tried to fight back.
He swung his staff, unleashing another explosion of holy and demonic energy. But Piaro just danced through the smoke. He stepped over the craters. He used the uneven ground to his advantage. The farmer knew every single inch of this dirt. He moved with the field, not against it. Rudra swung hard, aiming for Piaro's shoulder. Piaro ducked smoothly. He swept his hand plow at Rudra's ankles. Rudra jumped to avoid the heavy iron tool.
"You fell for it," Piaro laughed. Piaro thrust his empty hand upward. He grabbed a handful of loose dirt from his pocket and threw it right into Rudra's eyes.
"Hey!" Rudra yelled, blinking rapidly as the dust blinded him. While Rudra was blind in the air, Piaro brought the sword down hard on Rudra's chest by using his strongest single target swordsmanship technique.
"Supreme Swordsmanship 6th Style" Thud! The heavy hit knocked the breath out of Rudra. He crashed into the dirt. He tried to roll away, but a heavy boot stepped on his chest. Rudra blinked the dirt out of his eyes. He looked up. Piaro stood over him. The tip of the steel sword was resting gently against Rudra's throat. Piaro was breathing heavily. Sweat dripped from his chin. But he looked incredibly happy. Rudra's health bar flashed red. It dropped all the way down, stopping at exactly one point.
[The spar has ended.] [Piaro wins.] Rudra stared at the sword point. Then, he started to laugh. He laughed so hard his ribs hurt. He dropped his staff in the dirt and covered his face with his hands.
"You threw dirt in my eyes!" Rudra laughed.
"The great and noble Sword Saint threw pocket sand at me!" Piaro pulled his sword away. He sheathed it at his waist. He reached down and offered Rudra a hand.
"I am not just a Sword Saint anymore," Piaro smiled warmly.
"Farmers must be practical. Dirt is a very useful tool." Rudra took his hand. Piaro pulled him up. Rudra dusted off his black coat, shaking his head.
"That was a good fight," Rudra said.
"You were hitting me with the whole field. I couldn't even find a place to step. And the way you combined your swordsmanship and farming was really deadly."
"It felt right," Piaro said softly. He looked around the messy, crater-filled wheat field.
"For the first time, my sword did not feel like my only weapon. I was finally able to bring out the extremeness of my sword by not changing my sword to suit the environment but rather change the environment to suit my sword." Rudra picked up his staff. The glowing energies faded away, leaving the dark metal quiet.
"I'm glad you figured it out," Rudra said.
"But you really beat me up. I think I need a break."
"You fought very well, My Lord," Piaro said. He picked up his straw hat from the ground and dusted it off.
"Your new energies are very strong. But you still rely too much on your physical strength to solve problems. You must learn to let the environment help you."
"I'll keep that in mind," Rudra said, rubbing his sore chest. They walked back toward the dirt path together.
"So," Rudra asked.
"Are you going to teach the other knights how to throw dirt in people's eyes?"
"If it saves their lives, yes," Piaro nodded seriously. Rudra chuckled. He looked at the setting sun. The sky was turning a bright, fiery orange.
"I'm starving," Rudra said.
"I'm going to make dinner. Want to join me?"
"I would be honored," Piaro said.
"But please, no spicy food tonight. My stomach is not as strong as it used to be."
"No promises," Rudra grinned. Rudra felt tired, but he felt good. He had lost the spar, but he didn't mind. He had helped Piaro find his true path.
