Their arrows, sporting glossy black feathers and sharpened with cold steel tips keen as razor blades, were arranged in their leather quivers with meticulous precision.

Even their dark black leather garments, designed to swallow light and conceal them on the darkest of forest nights, were clean, immaculate, and fragrant with the scent of ancient forest incense and aromatic pine oils. They embodied, in every sense the word carries, the pinnacle of the martial elegance their race had always prided itself upon, that lethal grace that made the act of killing appear as a choreographed funeral dance, a work of art painted in blood and arrows.

But standing before this impeccably adorned and perfect army was Dex Williams. "Stop!" The cry burst from Dex's throat without warning, not merely a word, but a sonic wave laden with dense mana that launched like a cannon shot shattering the courtyard's sacred silence. It severed the synchronised archery drill that had been running at a flawless rhythm. A thick and frightening silence fell in the next instant, bows frozen mid-draw, arrows suspended on taut strings. Dex began walking with a deliberately provocative slowness between the rows of Elf warriors.

He made no attempt to muffle his footsteps as they did, he deliberately ground his heavy military boots into the earth, making the dry leaves crackle and small branches snap beneath him, as though crushing their pride with every step. He stopped before one of the thick wooden target boards erected at a distance of a hundred yards. He looked at the three arrows buried in its precise red centre. The grouping was breathtakingly accurate, the arrow feathers nearly touching one another in a point no larger than a coin.

With a cold hand bearing no expression, Dex wrenched one of those arrows free with a force that tore splinters of wood with it. He studied it for a moment, running his fingers along its cold steel tip, before snapping it between his hands with nauseating nonchalance, the crack of splitting wood ringing sharply through the courtyard. He then dropped the broken shaft at the feet of the stunned archers.

"Your fighting style… is genuinely impressive," Dex pronounced in a dry tone saturated with bitter sarcasm that lacerated the Elves swollen pride.

"It is stunning and spectacular… in summer sporting competitions, or in court exhibitions before nobles who have never once smelled blood. Your archery is elegant, your physical stance is perfect and observes every law of balance, and your breathing is as regular as a precision mechanical clock." Dex turned to face the assembled army and moved close to the face of one of the warriors in the front rank, close enough that his warm breath washed over the Elves cold features.

"But…" Dex whispered in a hoarse voice laced with a buried threat, "in the vocabulary of true death, in the muddy trenches where entrails cling to the earth and blood mingles with the dirt, the word 'elegant' simply means slow, and the word 'perfect' means predictable. And slowness and predictability on a real battlefield are nothing but two golden express tickets to the grave." A surge of suppressed angry murmuring ran through the Elf ranks.

Their fists tightened around their bows, and the colour of their eyes shifted to radiate a hostile gleam. From between the rows, Selin stepped forward, commander of the elite archery unit. Selin was an exceptionally tall Elf, slender as a blade, possessing sharp falcon-like features and eyes that gleamed with an emerald green brilliance reflecting centuries of combat experience.

"Lord Williams," Selin said in a voice dripping with wounded pride and tightly reined fury, "we are the finest archers on this continent, perhaps in the entire world. We were training before your ancestors were born. Our arrows do not miss the pupil of a soaring falcon's eye at two hundred yards even in the heart of a blizzard. No human, regardless of his magical power, has the right to instruct us Elf in how to hold a bow, or to describe our art as slow."
