Dex did not stand on a high platform to address them as a conventional general in gleaming armour looking down from above. He refused that entirely. "I will make the forest a labyrinth with no exit, a path that closes upon itself like a loop of torment," she said in her multi-layered cosmic voice. The final strategic meeting dissolved. You will not die because of their treachery." In that precise moment, before the echo of his promise had faded from the room, the change came.

From the distant eastern horizon, where the boundaries of the Danger Zone stretched and the dense trees of Falus thinned to meet the human plains, columns of thick black smoke rose into the sky. These were no ordinary campfires, they were strategic blazes, lit to burn the border vegetation and clear the path forward. The sound of enormous brass war horns, so deep and so heavy they were felt not in the ears alone but as a shuddering in the bones of the chest. Simultaneously, the earth itself began to tremble with regular and dreadful vibrations beneath the weight of thousands of armoured soldiers and the wheels of magical siege engines.

Dex lowered his hand slowly. The Phoenix Flames ceased their glow and darkness reclaimed the room. He sealed the crystal vial with absolute care and returned it to the pocket closest to his heart. Then, with a smooth and calculated motion, he drew his poisoned dagger from its sheath. His eyes no longer carried grief, they blazed now with a lethal compound: the noble Phoenix Fire, intermingled with the darkness and pragmatism of a prisoner preparing for deliberate killing.
