At the centre of the hall, General Okonnor stood with a desperate dignity before a massive circular table, not crafted from wood, out of reverence for the tree, but hewn from a single block of black basalt quarried from the depths of the mountains in ages long past.

Spread across the cold basalt surface was a living, detailed leather map of the Falus Forest and its complex terrain; a map that pulsed with lines of liquid mana marking elevations, slopes, and troop concentration points. Okonnor was gesturing with his curved silver dagger toward points of weakness and strength, speaking in the tone of a classical commander, a tone steeped in military honour, forged through a hundred battles and the leadership of thousands of soldiers.

"The enemy outnumbers and outequips us overwhelmingly, that is a truth we cannot deny," Okonnor began, his deep voice reverberating through the wooden cavity of the hall like the rumble of suppressed thunder.

"Five thousand armoured soldiers from the Falcons of Visus, against our few hundred warriors capable of bearing arms. Therefore, open confrontation is suicide. We will rely on the military doctrine that has preserved our kind for thousands of years: 'zone defence and exploitation of elevated terrain.'" Okonnor pointed the tip of his dagger at several high positions on the map.

"We will deploy our elite archers, the Shadow Spiders, on the dark suspended bridges and the dense upper branches surrounding the main corridors. They will not fire their arrows at random; they will target the human officers, the standard-bearers, and the support sorcerers, to break their chain of command." He moved the dagger to the strategic chokepoint in the south.

"Meanwhile, our senior shadow-mages will activate the Wall of Absolute Night enchantment at the southern entrance to the village, a solid mana barrier that absorbs light and kinetic energy. This will slow the advance of their heavy infantry and pack them into a confined space. And once they are floundering in the darkness, we engage them hand-to-hand in close-quarters combat, using our agility and our blind familiarity with the forest to tear through their flanks from behind and withdraw before they can retaliate."

The Elven commanders gathered around the table nodded their heads in solemn, approving silence. Their eyes gleamed with a mournful pride. This was the way the Elf had always fought, across thousands of years: honour in battle, lethal precision, exploitation of environment, and death with dignity and nobility, the enemy's sword in their chests and not their backs.

"A failing plan. In fact, to be entirely candid, a perfectly decorated recipe for collective ritual suicide." The cold, sardonic voice, emptied of every trace of respect, severed the hall's sacred silence. Every head snapped sharply and angrily toward the darkest corner of the chamber. There, Dex Williams was leaning his back against the carved wooden wall, one foot crossed over the other with a nonchalance wholly at odds with the situation.

He was holding a red apple he had picked from the supply table, peeling it slowly with his small knife in a provocatively unhurried manner, as though he were watching a poorly written comedy, while the red peel spiralled down to the floor in one long, unbroken ribbon. Failen, one of the Dark Elf vanguard commanders, bearing an ugly scar that ran from his eye to his jaw, snarled and placed his roughened hand on the hilt of his poisoned sword, pulling it half free with a sharp metallic screech.

"How dare you, you intruding human, you scum, insult General Okonnor's tactics in our Hall of Roots? We were shedding human blood before your so-called Empire was even born!" Okonnor raised his hand immediately with a firm gesture to silence his furious commander, and returned the blade to its sheath with a single glance. He turned toward Dex, his green eyes narrowing with a cautious curiosity shot through with indignation.

"You have an impudent tongue, Williams's heir, and it seems you have not learned when to stay silent. Speak then. Why do you believe, with such human arrogance, that my time-honoured plan is a failure?" Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. "The modern Imperial army, specifically the Falcons of Visus Legion, is not a herd of stupid beasts or undisciplined mercenaries who charge screaming into your arrows to be slaughtered." Dex drove the tip of his small knife forcefully into the map, precisely at the marker for the southern entrance where they had planned to raise the Shadow Wall.

"The human war machine has evolved while you have been hiding here. The magical Shadow Wall you are relying on as your primary shield? The Empire no longer attacks magical walls with swords. They possess an advanced technology called Mana Breakers." Dex raised his eyes to meet the stunned faces of the Elf.

"These are armoured vehicles carrying massive cylinders of resonant crystal, operated by specialist sorcerers. These machines emit counter-frequency sonic and magical waves capable of shattering any fixed mana structure. They will disperse your great Wall and turn it into faint smoke before their infantry comes within a full kilometre of it. You will have burned your energy into the air for nothing." He then pulled the knife free and drove it into the symbols marking the bridges and upper branches.

"And your elite archers positioned above, the ones you take such pride in? The moment they loose the first arrow and reveal their positions, the humans will not send soldiers to climb trees and face them with honour. They will illuminate the forest with signal fires, and rain down projectiles from long-range Explosive Mana Cannons upon those bridges. They will reduce the branches to burning splinters, and your archers will fall like burning rain without killing a single officer."

Dex tilted his head to one side, his cold smile widening.

"Static defence, nobility, and spectacle are precisely, literally, what they are praying to their gods that you will do. They want you gathered in clear formations so they can encircle you and crush you with a single artillery strike, then be home before dinner." Silence fell over the Hall of Roots. This time the silence was as heavy as lead. The young human's words carried a harsh and detailed truth, a truth they had refused to see, shielded by their pride and their long isolation.

They understood now that their ancient magic would not hold against the Empire's industrialised war-sorcery.

"Then…" asked Okonnor with complete gravity, every trace of dismissiveness having evaporated from his voice, "if all our tactics are suicide, how do we fight them, Dex? How do we survive?" At this, Dex smiled a smile entirely devoid of human warmth. It was not the smile of a prince, nor a commander, it was the smile of a hungry wolf cornered in a dark alley. In that moment, Dex recalled the harsh and dark years of his former life in Blackrock, the infernal prison whose damp walls had raised him.

He remembered the prison yards where giants among serial killers imposed their dominion. He remembered the first brutal lesson he had learned there, with blood running from his broken nose: the weak do not face the strong head-on in an open arena with honour. If they try, they are crushed and their skulls broken for the entertainment of others.

"The first rule of survival when you are the weaker party," said Dex, his eyes darkening with the memories of prison, "is to forget the word 'honour'. The weak do not fight in the light of the sun. The weak lure the arrogant strong into a dark, narrow, and filthy alley." Dex bent over the basalt table, gathered the commanders around him with a gesture of his hand, and lowered his voice as though sharing a bloody and forbidden secret: "You throw dirt in their eyes to blind them.

You break their knee from behind when they are not looking. You drive a rusty dagger into their kidney. Then you stab them ten more times as they fall, all of this before the strong one even realises the fight has started." Dex slapped his hand down on the map.

"What we are going to do is not a glorious military campaign that poets will immortalise. We are going to transform this sacred forest, your great tree, into the largest and filthiest prison alley in the history of the Empire." Dex began to lay out his diabolical plan. He proposed replacing the war of fronts and the noble alignment with a dirty war of attrition. No direct confrontations. No announcements of presence.

Instead, an endless, unbroken chain of psychological and physical traps, manipulating the environment to make the earth swallow them and the trees poison them. A plan engineered with meticulous care not to kill them with honour, but to sow a maddening terror in their hearts, to make the elite soldiers scream and weep in the darkness, wishing for death a thousand times before they were ever granted the chance to see the face of a single Dark Elf warrior.
