After several hours of rigorous instruction, the village and its entire surrounding area had transformed into a silent and deadly hive of activity. Every Dark Elf moved in absolute quiet, preparing traps, deploying the Ghost Cells, and readying poisoned arrows. There was no time for rest; the war drums had drawn close enough that their vibrations were felt in the teeth before they reached the ears.

In an isolated and darkened corner, near one of the lower observation platforms overlooking a relatively wide path through which horses could pass, Dex crouched on the wooden floor. Before him rested a very small flame, shielded by stones so it would not betray their position. He was entirely absorbed in an exceedingly precise physical process.

Between his fingers he held strands of metal wire, so thin they were nearly transparent, barely visible to the naked eye in full daylight, let alone in the darkness of night. General Okonnor sat beside him in long silence, his broadsword resting across his knees. Okonnor watched with cautious awe as the metal strands glowed a faint red, nearly the colour of blood, whenever Dex passed concentrated drops of Phoenix Fire mana through them, fusing it into the molecular fabric of the metal without melting it.

The precision of control the young human displayed was simultaneously astonishing and deeply unsettling. After a period of deep contemplation, Okonnor broke the silence. With a bewilderment tinged by something resembling pity, he spoke in a low voice: "I have been watching you for hours, Dex Williams. You are unlike any human noble I have ever met or fought in my long life. Nobles, even the villainous ones, are governed by rules, vanity, and performances of hollow pride.

Nor do you think like a mercenary or adventurer chasing gold and immediate survival. Your mindset, your tactics, your cold ruthlessness, you think like someone who has lived at the very bottom of the underworld. Like someone buried alive in the dark for far too long, long enough to forget the shape of the sky, and to forget what mercy tastes like." Dex stopped working for a moment. His fingers held the glowing wire with extreme care.

He raised his head slowly and looked through the small flame into Okonnor's green eyes. The firelight reflected in Dex's blue eyes, yet it reflected no warmth. Instead it mingled with cold and desolate memories: stone walls weeping moisture, and screams echoing through the dead of night in a Blackrock cell.

"Nobility, General, honour, and the codes of chivalry inscribed in the gilded pages of history books," Dex began in a voice calm and stripped of all emotion, as though reciting an absolute mathematical truth, "are, for the most part, nothing but an elegant lie. A lie invented by the powerful, the victorious, and those who command armies and own palaces, to convince the weak and the crushed to die in quiet compliance, and to accept their humiliating fate as a sacrifice offered to society."

Dex returned his focus to the wire, running his fingers along it to distribute the heat with precision.

"Honour, and every medal you pin to your chest, carries no physical weight whatsoever. Honour has never once stopped a rusty knife from sliding smoothly into your kidney while you sleep in your cell, because someone wanted your shoes. Honour does not feed the hungry, and it does not heal a dying father rotting with poison." Dex rose slowly, holding the two ends of the glowing wire with great care. He moved toward two enormous trees standing opposite one another on either side of the wide dirt path.

He began securing and fastening one end of the wire tightly to the trunk of the first tree, then drew it across the path and tied it to the tree opposite. "True power, Okonnor, is not measured in the size of muscles, or in the quantity of mana you possess or release into the sky to intimidate your enemies, or in the number of swords that answer your command," said Dex as he tested the tension of the wire, now entirely invisible in the darkness.

"True and final power is to make your enemy afraid to set his foot on the ground because he does not know what will explode beneath him. Power is to make him doubt the safety of the very air he breathes. Power is to occupy his mind and fill it with pure dread before you ever touch his body." Dex stepped back and gestured toward the apparent emptiness between the two trees, where the wire stretched, nearly vanishing into nothing, visible only if one stood at a precise angle and the moonlight struck it directly.

"This slender wire, forged from treated Elf steel and compressed to its absolute limit, is now charged with concentrated, dormant thermal mana drawn from my core. I have stretched it, refined it, and fixed it at a height calculated with extreme precision, a height that corresponds exactly to the neck level of a human rider mounted on an Imperial war-horse," Dex explained with a horrifying coldness.

Okonnor's eyes widened and the muscles of his jaw locked with dread as he absorbed the lethal geometry and the hideous physics of this silent trap. The coming scene assembled itself with vivid force in his mind: the Imperial cavalry vanguard, the pride of the Legion, mounted on their swift, armoured warhorses, surging at full gallop along this path in their attempt to breach the forest, charging forward with reckless confidence at the sight of no enemies before them…

And then, the hidden wire meets their rushing necks. Due to the tremendous speed, the sharpness of the wire, and the latent heat within it, the wire would function as an invisible guillotine blade. The heat would sear and sever the blood vessels in the same instant it cleaved through flesh and bone. There would be no spray of blood to warn those riding behind. There would be no screaming, because the throats would be removed.

The heads would fall into the dirt in a terrifying silence, while the headless torsos and the charging horses continued forward several more metres by sheer momentum, before the riders behind them, or indeed the bodies themselves, understood that they had already died.

"This… this is not a military tactic," whispered Okonnor, his voice trembling for the first time in centuries as he stared at the young man before him as though looking at a predatory beast.

"This is a slaughterhouse. This is diabolism in its purest form."

"This is necessary," replied Dex with an arid coldness, entirely absent of guilt or remorse, as he pulled the final knot tight and completed the trap.

"I told you, Okonnor, there is no time for nobility or honour. The entirety of Falus Forest is my large cell now. And the Imperial army crawling toward us are not noble knights. They are the sadistic guards who have come to carry out the execution order." Dex turned toward the commander, the faint light carving his harsh features into sharp relief.

"And I will teach these guards a bloody lesson in rebellion. I will make them fear the very speed of their own horses, fear their own momentum, more than they fear us. I will make them wish they had turned back before their feet ever trod this hell." In that precise moment, as the cold wind howled between the trees carrying with it the smell of the approaching war drums, Okonnor grasped a terrifying truth that shook him to his core.

He had believed all along that he had allied himself with a desperate young human, cast out by his family, searching for a lifeline to save his father. But the truth was deeper and far darker than that. He had allied himself with a genuine devil, a devil crystallised in the most brutal conditions of human subjugation, concealing himself with consummate skill behind the guise of a noble victim.

And Okonnor understood that this devil would burn the forest, the Legion, and perhaps the entire Empire, simply to reach what he wanted.
