The heavy, oppressive silence inside the Mistral safehouse was broken only by the faint, sputtering hiss of the oil lamps. The warm, flickering orange light danced across the faces of the seven young Huntsmen and Huntresses, casting long, dramatic shadows against the dusty wooden walls.
"Professor Ozpin...?" Ruby whispered, her silver eyes wide, her hands falling limply to her sides. The boy standing before them looked absolutely nothing like the silver-haired, bespectacled Headmaster of Beacon Academy. He was just a farm boy, no older than fourteen, wearing dirt-stained suspenders and a simple green undershirt.
Yet, the way his hands rested upon the polished brass gears of The Long Memory, the way his spine was perfectly, regally aligned, and the ancient, sorrowful depth in his hazel eyes, it was undeniably him.
"It is I, Miss Rose," Ozpin replied, his voice utilizing Oscar's vocal cords but carrying a rhythmic, measured cadence that commanded absolute respect. A faint, melancholic smile touched the boy's lips.
"Though I admit, the vessel is somewhat... unconventional."
"This is impossible," Weiss Schnee breathed, taking a half-step forward. Her analytical mind, usually so structured and precise, was entirely short-circuiting. She gripped the hilt of Myrtenaster, her high-collared blue and white dress rustling in the drafty room.
"Aura transfer... soul projection... this defies every established law of Dust and bio-kinetics."
"And yet, here we are," Qrow Branwen remarked dryly from the corner, taking a slow swig from his silver flask. He leaned back against the peeling wallpaper, offering a grim, exhausted smirk.
"Told you kids the world was bigger than what they put in the textbooks." Ozpin's gaze swept over the gathered students. He took in Yang's rugged leather jacket and intact, clenched fists. Ren's pristine green tailcoat. Nora's unusually quiet, focused posture. Then, his eyes narrowed slightly, noting a missing presence.
"I am immensely relieved to see you all standing before me," Ozpin said gently.
"But I notice your formation is incomplete. Where is Miss Belladonna?" Yang crossed her arms, her violet eyes hardening with protective loyalty.
"She had to take a detour, Professor. We intercepted some encrypted White Fang logs back in Vale. Adam Taurus staged a coup. He's plotting to assassinate Blake's parents in Menagerie. She went back to warn them." Ozpin closed his eyes for a brief moment, a heavy sigh escaping his lips.
"I see. The White Fang's radicalization in Mistral has indeed been escalating. I suspected they would move against Ghira Belladonna eventually. We must trust that she has the strength to protect her family."
"She does," Ruby said fiercely, gripping the shaft of Crescent Rose.
"But Professor... how are you doing this? How are you inside him?"
"My semblance... or rather, my curse... is reincarnation," Ozpin explained, his voice dropping into a solemn, heavy register. He leaned slightly on the cane, the brass gears clicking faintly.
"When my physical form was destroyed during my battle with Cinder Fall in the Beacon Vault, my soul was not allowed to pass on. It was drawn across the currents of Remnant, seeking out a like-minded successor. I awakened within the mind of this young man, Oscar Pine. Our souls are merging, intertwining our memories and our strength." Jaune Arc shifted uncomfortably, his heavy, steel-riveted chestplate clanking softly.
"Is he... is Oscar still in there?"
"He is," Ozpin assured him.
"He is graciously allowing me to speak with you now. The transition is terrifying for him, but he possesses a remarkably brave heart." Ozpin looked deeply at the assembled teenagers, a profound, lingering guilt flashing across his borrowed face.
"I cannot express how glad I am that you all survived the Battle of Beacon. I know the casualties were high. I know the terror you faced when the skies darkened and the White Fang breached our walls. I failed to protect the academy."
"Actually, Professor," Pyrrha Nikos stepped forward, her retrofitted bronze armor catching the lamplight. Her high crimson braid swayed as she offered a small, reassuring smile.
"The casualties were miraculously minimal. The academy's structural damage was contained, and the Grimm were eradicated before the night was over." Ozpin blinked, feigning a polite ignorance, though his eyes twinkled knowingly.
"Is that so? Qrow mentioned the restoration, but to hear the Grimm were routed so efficiently... how did you manage it?"
"It wasn't us," Nora blurted out, throwing her hands in the air.
"It was Saitama! He literally fell out of the sky right when Cinder was about to execute Pyrrha! He swatted a giant, ancient Wyvern out of the air like it was a mosquito, and then he punched a hole in the clouds that wiped out an entire flock of Nevermores!"
"Cinder had the Fall Maiden's power," Jaune added, his voice filled with lingering awe as he adjusted the red sash tied around his waist.
"She unleashed a massive column of fire on him, and it didn't even singe his cape. He defeated her with the shockwave of a single punch." Qrow chuckled from the corner, capping his flask.
"Yeah, the bald guy is a walking natural disaster for the bad guys. Headmistress Goodwitch has him on the payroll now as the 'Special Campus Security Consultant.' As long as he's sweeping the courtyards, Vale is officially the safest piece of real estate on the planet."
"And he's our 'Tactical Kinetic Evaluator'!" Ruby cheered, her silver eyes lighting up.
"Glynda makes us try to hit him in combat class! We haven't been able to make him flinch, but our reaction times have gotten so fast that fighting normal Grimm feels like everything is moving in slow motion!" Ozpin offered a warm, genuine smile.
"I am deeply aware of Mr. Saitama's contributions, Miss Rose. It is a profound shame that I cannot meet this remarkable savior in person. His presence has granted us a second chance." The lighthearted atmosphere, however, did not last. Pyrrha took a slow, measured breath. Her green eyes hardened with a resolute, unwavering authority. She stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Jaune.
"Professor Ozpin," Pyrrha began, her voice steady and echoing clearly in the dusty room.
"Before we deployed to Mistral, I... I made a decision. I told them everything." Ozpin's hands stilled on his cane. Qrow stopped leaning against the wall, his posture instantly straightening.
"I told Jaune, my team, and Team RWBY," Pyrrha continued, her chin held high.
"I told them about the Maidens. I told them about Amber, the previous Fall Maiden, and the machine in the Vault. I told them that you, General Ironwood, Glynda, and Qrow are a secret group operating in the shadows. The guardians of Remnant." The silence in the room became absolute. The flickering shadows seemed to stretch longer across the floorboards.
"We didn't believe it at first," Weiss admitted, her voice tight.
"Fairy tales coming to life... it violates every tenet of modern logic. But after seeing a man who can break the sky with a single punch, and watching a young boy speak with your voice, Professor... we know she is telling the truth." You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. Jaune took a heavy step forward, his blue eyes burning with an intense, demanding fire. He wasn't the clumsy, insecure boy who had bluffed his way into Beacon anymore.
He was a seasoned leader who had bled and broken his limits for the people standing behind him.
"You brought Pyrrha into the Vault," Jaune said, his voice dropping into a low, sharp register that demanded answers.
"You tried to put the weight of the world on her shoulders. We've fought your battles, Professor. We nearly died on that tower. We left our home to come halfway across the world because you needed us to. So tell us. Tell us what is actually going on. Who are we fighting?" Ruby stepped up beside Jaune, her expression fiercely determined. Yang, Ren, and Nora moved in perfect synchronicity, forming a unified, unbreakable front. Ozpin looked at the six teenagers.
He saw the fire in their eyes, the unyielding demand for the truth. He looked toward Qrow. The grizzled huntsman stared back, his crimson eyes reflecting the lamplight. He gave Ozpin a slow, solemn nod. The time for half-measures was over. Ozpin sighed, his young shoulders slumping under the invisible weight of his ancient war.
"I owe you all a profound apology," Ozpin whispered, his voice laced with genuine remorse.
"I am deeply, truly sorry for everything you have been dragged into. I never wished to place the burden of this world upon children. But destiny has forced my hand." He planted his cane firmly on the ground, leaning forward.
"You asked who we are fighting," Ozpin said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute calm.
"We are fighting Salem."
"Salem?" Ruby repeated, testing the foreign, ominous name on her tongue.
"She is... my archnemesis," Ozpin explained, carefully navigating the labyrinth of his own tragic history without revealing the damning truth of his past love, or the paralyzing reality of her unkillable nature.
"She is the Queen of the Grimm. A being of unprecedented dark magic who commands the creatures of darkness. Her ultimate goal is to divide humanity, seize the four Relics hidden beneath the Huntsman Academies, and take over Remnant."
"A Queen of the Grimm..." Ren murmured, his eyes widening slightly.
"If such an entity exists, why hide her from the world? Why not unite the kingdoms and the military to stand against her?"
"Because panic is her greatest weapon," Qrow interjected harshly, stepping into the light.
"Grimm are drawn to negative emotion, kid. If the entire world suddenly realized that a dark queen was actively directing the monsters at our borders, the resulting global panic would create an apocalyptic Grimm swarm that would wipe out the kingdoms before the armies could even mobilize. We fight her in the shadows to keep the people safe in the light."
"Cinder Fall, Mercury Black, Emerald Sustrai... they are her subordinates," Ozpin continued.
"They orchestrated the Fall of Beacon to cripple our communications and steal the Relic of Choice. And they are not alone. Salem must have possessed an inner circle of elite, deadly agents. And right now... they are operating here, in Mistral." The reality of their deployment slammed into the students like a physical blow.
"That's why Headmistress Goodwitch sent us," Weiss realized, her hand flying to her mouth.
"The White Fang isn't just acting out. They are being manipulated by Salem's agents."
"Wait a minute," Yang suddenly spoke up, her brow furrowing in deep confusion. She threw her hands in the air.
"If this Salem lady is the big boss pulling all the strings... why the hell didn't you just tell Saitama?!"
"Yeah!" Nora agreed loudly.
"Saitama was practically begging for a 'Final Boss' to fight! If you just pointed him in her direction, he'd march over to her evil castle and punch her into orbit! Problem solved!" Ozpin and Qrow exchanged a dark, deeply burdened look.
"It is not that simple, Miss Valkyrie," Ozpin said, his voice heavy with tactical dread.
"We deliberately chose to hide Salem's existence from Mr. Saitama."
"Why?!" Jaune demanded.
"Because of the collateral damage," Qrow snapped, his voice sharp and unyielding.
"You kids saw what he did to the Wyvern. You saw what happens when he just stumbles on the pavement. Now imagine that kind of physical mass colliding with a Queen of Grimm who possesses boundless dark magic." Qrow stepped closer to the table, leaning over it.
"If Saitama marches into the Grimmlands to fight her, the clash of that magnitude wouldn't just defeat her. It would shatter the continent. The tectonic plates would crack. The shockwaves would wipe out entire settlements. And worse... if Salem realizes she is cornered by an unstoppable anomaly, she will throw every single Grimm on the planet into a frenzied, suicidal rampage. Millions of innocent civilians would die in the crossfire. We contain him in Vale to save the world." Ozpin nodded solemnly.
"With Saitama's presence in Vale acting as an absolute deterrent, Salem is avoiding our home entirely. She knows she cannot breach his defenses. Therefore, she has advanced her timetable for the other three kingdoms. Mistral is her current target. And we have grave reason to believe that Haven Academy is already compromised from the inside."
"Compromised?" Pyrrha asked, her posture stiffening.
"The Huntsmen of Mistral are going missing," Qrow explained grimly.
"Whole vanguard patrols are vanishing into the forests, and nobody is investigating. The only person with the authority to cover that up is the man giving the orders. Headmaster Leonardo Lionheart." The students gasped.
"Another Headmaster... is working for her?" Ruby whispered, horrified.
"He is terrified of her," Ozpin corrected softly.
"Fear makes men do terrible things. But we cannot act overtly. If we storm Haven Academy blindly, Leonardo will alert the Mistral Council, frame us as hostile invaders, and have you all arrested. We need to be surgical."
"So what do we do?" Jaune asked, his leadership instincts flaring as he looked at Ozpin.
"We're here. We're ready."
"For now, we observe," Ozpin commanded.
"We must keep an eye on Haven Academy from the shadows. We need to discover who Leonardo is working with, and more importantly, we must ensure the Relic of Knowledge beneath the school remains secure. Until we have actionable evidence of his betrayal, we wait for them to make a mistake." Ozpin leaned heavily on his cane, looking at the eager, battle-ready faces of his students.
"In the meantime, you must prepare yourselves. Your physical conditioning has improved remarkably under Mr. Saitama's unintentional tutelage. However, if you are to face Salem's inner circle, you must refine your techniques. Starting tomorrow, we will focus on advanced, unarmed self-defense and deeper Aura manipulation. Your weapons can be disarmed or broken. Your soul cannot be." He patted his own chest lightly.
"And I suppose... Oscar and I must begin our own physical conditioning as well." Jaune let out a small, breathless chuckle, rubbing his bandaged knuckles. The mention of unarmed combat and grueling conditioning instantly brought him back to the agonizing, repetitive mornings in the Beacon courtyard.
"Unarmed combat..." Jaune murmured, looking over at Pyrrha with a faint smile.
"I guess all those push-ups and squats are going to pay off after all. I actually managed to knock a Beringel flat on its back with my bare hands a few weeks ago."
"Not bad, Vomit Boy!" Yang grinned, bumping Jaune's shoulder with her own.
"Looks like the bald guy's crazy routine actually works if you have the Aura to back it up!" Ozpin offered a faint smile at their camaraderie, but his expression quickly hardened into absolute seriousness.
"There is one final condition to your involvement in this," Ozpin said, his voice ringing with absolute finality.
"Now that you know the truth about Salem, you are sworn to secrecy. This information does not leave this room. You are not to breathe a word of this shadow war to anyone outside our circle." He looked directly at Ruby, Weiss, and Jaune.
"And most importantly... you must never, under any circumstances, reveal this to Saitama. If he discovers we have been hiding the 'Final Boss' from him, the consequences for Remnant would be catastrophic." The students exchanged uneasy, guilt-ridden glances. The thought of actively lying to the man who had saved their lives, who had trained them, and who had playfully complained about cabbage prices with them, felt like a betrayal.
But as they looked at the grim reality etched into Qrow's face, they understood the stakes.
"We understand, Professor," Ruby finally said, her voice quiet but resolute.
"We'll keep the secret."
"Thank you, Miss Rose," Ozpin breathed, the ancient tension leaving his young shoulders. He closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
"And now... I believe I have borrowed this young man's body for long enough. He requires rest." Suddenly, the regal, commanding presence within the boy vanished completely. The rigid posture collapsed. The boy slumped forward, gasping for air as if he had just breached the surface of a deep pool. He stumbled backward, his boots tripping over one another until he hit the wall, his hands flying up defensively as his hazel eyes darted wildly around the room.
Oscar Pine blinked rapidly, his chest heaving as he stared at the six heavily armed, incredibly intimidating teenagers who were now staring back at him in absolute silence.
"W-What just happened?!" Oscar squeaked, his voice cracking with pure, adolescent panic as he clutched The Long Memory to his chest like a shield.
"Why are you all looking at me like that?! Did... did he say something weird?!" Nora leaned over to Ren, whispering loudly, "Well, this is going to be incredibly awkward."
