The Land of Darkness was a realm where the sky never truly woke. Heavy, charcoal-colored clouds hung low over a jagged landscape of black glass and bubbling pools of dark tar, from which the faceless horrors of the Grimm were continuously birthed. At the peak of a looming, obsidian crag sat the castle of the queen. A fortress of silent stone and ancient, absolute malice. Inside the central council chamber, the atmosphere was as suffocating as the dark world outside. Cinder Fall sat in a high-backed stone chair.
Her posture stiff, her breathing shallow and ragged The bald man's casual punch had not just broken her bones, it had shattered her fundamental understanding of power. Even after weeks of agonizing treatment and the application of experimental, Grimm-infused healing salves, every single nerve in her left side screamed with a blinding, white-hot torment.
Her left arm hung completely useless in a heavy black sling, and she had to use every ounce of her remaining Aura just to keep her chest from collapsing under the weight of her fractured ribs. Behind her chair stood Emerald Sustrai and Mercury Black. Emerald's hands were shaking as she watched her master wince at every breath, her amber eyes wide with a rare, paralyzing fear. Mercury remained uncharacteristically silent, his arms crossed over his chest, his grey eyes fixed on the floor.
They had seen Cinder at her most powerful, and they had seen her broken by a man who looked like he was going to a grocery store.
"Oh, look at you," a high, manic voice echoed from across the long obsidian table. Tyrian Callows leaned over the polished stone, his scorpion tail twitching erratically behind his back, his gold eyes wide with a sick, ecstatic glee.
"The glorious Maiden! The harbinger of our Goddess's grand design! Reduced to a quivering, broken little bird because she crossed paths with an egg! Haha! Ahahaha!"
"Shut up, Tyrian," Cinder hissed, her voice a cracked, dangerous whisper that cost her a sharp spasm of pain in her throat. She gripped the edge of the stone table with her right hand, her nails digging into the dark rock.
"You weren't there. You didn't see him."
"Because I was doing my job, dear Cinder!" Tyrian cackled, slamming his pale hands onto the table, his body language shifting into a predatory crouch.
"I was sewing the seeds of chaos in the shadows, while you were busy getting swatted out of the sky like a common horsefly!"
"Enough, Tyrian." Arthur Watts spoke from the head of the table, his voice a cool, aristocratic contrast to the faunus's madness. He was methodically typing commands into his customized scroll, his brow furrowed as he analyzed a flickering, distorted video file, the only surviving footage of the man in yellow suit's arrival, captured by a distant, unhacked Atlas drone.
"The tactical failure at Beacon is a logistical nightmare. The network is down, yes, but the academy remains functional. The infrastructure of Vale did not collapse. And more importantly, the Atlesian military has secured the perimeter around an asset we cannot identify," Watts turned the scroll toward Cinder, showing a frozen frame of a bald man in a yellow suit.
"I have run this individual's facial metrics through every database across the four kingdoms. He does not exist. He has no birth registry, no academic records, no criminal history, and no SDC labor profile. He is a ghost who possesses the kinetic output of a continental tectonic shift." Hazel Rainart sat in the corner of the room, his massive arms crossed, his face a grim, stony mask. He didn't look at the screen.
"It doesn't matter who he is. He stopped the Wyvern. He stopped the panic. If he stands between us and the schools, he is an obstacle that must be crushed. But Cinder... how did your Aura fail so completely against a single blow?" Love what you're reading? Discover and support the author on the platform they originally published on. Cinder's jaw clenched so tightly her teeth ground together. It didn't fail. Her mind screamed in absolute terror. The Aura didn't even matter. His fist didn't just break the shield.
His fist... ignored it. Before she could speak, the massive, iron-reinforced doors at the end of the hall swung open without a sound. The temperature in the room instantly plummeted. The oppressive weight of a primordial soul filled the chamber, forcing Tyrian to immediately drop to his knees, his face pressed against the cold stone floor. Watts stood up straight, bowing his head, while Hazel uncrossed his arms, his posture turning rigid with absolute respect.
Salem walked slowly into the light of the crimson crystals lining the walls. Her pale, translucent skin was marked by the dark, veined corruption of the Grimm pools, and her eyes, vessels of pure obsidian and burning red, fixed directly onto Cinder Fall.
"My Queen," Cinder whispered, trying to rise from her chair, but the sudden movement caused a flare of agony so severe that she nearly collapsed back into the stone, her right hand clutching her ribs as a small gasp of pain escaped her lips.
"Sit, Cinder," Salem said, her voice a soft, melodic purr that carried the terrifying weight of a thousand winters. She glided to the head of the table, her black robes trailing behind her like smoke. She did not look angry. She looked deeply, intensely curious.
"I have reviewed the reports from the Vale sector. I have watched the sky clear. And I have felt the sudden, violent erasure of one of my greatest creations." Salem reached out, her pale fingers tracing the edge of Watts's scroll, staring at the simple, pixelated image of the newcomer. Her eyes drifting back to Cinder.
"Tell me, child. What did you feel when he struck you?" Cinder looked down, her pride completely shattered beneath her mistress's gaze.
"It... it wasn't a Semblance, My Queen. I tried to burn him. I unleashed the full force of the Fall Maiden's magic. The flames... they didn't even singe his cape. When he hit me, there was no magical spark. No energy. Just... an absolute, unavoidable weight. It felt as though the world itself had decided to move through me." Salem's eyes narrowed slightly, a rare expression of genuine calculation crossing her face. For ten thousand years, she had fought gods, wizards, and heroes. She knew the limits of human souls.
She knew the boundaries of Magic. But this... this was something else. A creature of raw, unvarnished physical finality.
"A fascinating anomaly," Salem murmured, turning back to her council.
"He resides at Beacon now, under the guise of a 'security consultant.' Glynda Goodwitch and James Ironwood think they have hidden a god in their courtyard. They think his presence will deter us."
"Should I go to Vale, My Queen?" Tyrian asked, his voice trembling with a psychotic eagerness as he looked up from the floor.
"Let me find this yellow insect! Let me tear his skin! Let me present his bald head to you on a silver platter!"
"No, Tyrian," Salem said, her voice cutting off his fanaticism instantly.
"You will not go to Vale. If Cinder's account is accurate, a direct physical confrontation with this individual is a waste of our resources. We do not strike a mountain with a hammer. We find the fault lines within it." Watts adjusted his spectacles, his analytical mind immediately catching her drift.
"Then our objective remains the same? The remaining Academies?"
"Yes," Salem confirmed, her eyes flashing with a cold, immortal brilliance.
"Our grand design does not change because of a single stone in our path. We will adjust our sequence. If Vale is heavily guarded by this entity, we will let it sit in its isolation. The Cross-Continental Transmit system is broken. The kingdoms cannot communicate. They are blind to each other's fates." She turned her gaze back to the map of Remnant projected on the central table.
"Arthur, you will accompany Tyrian to Mistral. Haven Academy remains vulnerable. Leonardo Lionheart is already within our grasp. We will proceed with our plan to retrieve the Relic of Knowledge from the Vault beneath Haven. Let the bald man guard a broken school in Vale while we dismantle the rest of the world around him." Salem stepped back into the shadows of the chamber, her dark presence expanding until the room felt small.
"Let the children of Beacon believe they have won a permanent peace," the Queen of the Grimm whispered into the darkness.
"Let them walk alongside their invincible protector. When the other three kingdoms fall, and the Relics are in my possession, we will see if his fist can punch the weight of a dying world."
